We took advantage of Nugget coming into heat today to pair her with Soot,since she had passed the weight we require in our program to breed. This litter will be the second generation in our agouti based project line

Have you ever seen those posts in ratty groups where someone has a surprise litter and they say "I only ever let them out together closely supervised I don't know how this happened!"? Well this is what happened! It takes less than a second for mating to occur in rats,and someone who doesn't know how to spot lordosis would have no idea it even happened. Don't let opposite s*x rats have any contact whatsoever unless you are fully prepared and educated on raising a litter!
Lordosis is the swayback position a doe must take in order for ovulation and fertilization to occur.
The skittering around and vibrating behavior done by Nugget in this interaction is in heat behavior. Note that a doe does not need to be in heat in order for mating to occur.
(This is a small bare enclosure for pairing,NOT permanent housing)

Today Bean's boys were pulled from mom and sisters and put in with a same-s*x babysitter (Alder) to continue learning to "rat"!
None of this litter will be available to adopters,as we have decided to hold the litter back to select the best temperaments around 4-6 months to continue the line with. We apologize to those who were hoping for pups from it!

Unfortunately,his sister Phobos(not pictured) did not live up to our temperament standards and will be removed from the breeding program.

We have heard reports of martens related to ours (rats from a different breeder- genetic continuals from before we began outcrossing to our black self line) showing unwanted hormonal behaviors. Can those who have gotten martens from us at any point in the past please shoot us an update on those kiddos when you get a free moment?

Bean has officially taken for her duplicate litter with Alder and we are expecting pups within a week based on her size! We are hoping for more dark martens and possibly a nice black self in this litter!

The three musketeers in the boys gen-pop! Alder (pale boy) is officially retired, Soot (black boy) has fully matured into an absolute sweetie unit, and Deimos (dark gray boy) is starting to mature into his adult size nicely and loves to give kisses!
