4th of July dog protocol activated: How to not end up on a facebook missing dog post.

Step 1: Walk outside on leash only- slip lead, back up harness with leash attached, collar with name and phone number, microchipped and info updated.

I have a fenced in yard- but I still follow step 1 for all the dogs just in case, even though only one has firework phobia.

Step 2: Thudershirt on for those that need it.

Step 3: Lights on and action movie playing loudly- preferably one with an excellent soundtrack- Guardians of the Galaxy!
Also window units or box fans going to drown out blasts.

Step 4: Give long lasting chew bones (I save these for when the blasts increase or as needed).

Step 5: act like an idiot and celebrate any particularly loud blasts-make it fun- have everyone do a trick or basic obedience command and give out treats- no coddling, cuddling, or saying "It's ok" which reinforces fear behaviors.

Goals: calm and relaxed dogs, no dogs hiding in other rooms, the puppy does not learn to be afraid or pick up any other negative behaviors from the noise phobic dog, dogs stay inside (which is why I fed them dinner and had them go potty earlier than normal- I wasn't early enough as you can hear from the video...)

Misc: Rip no longer needs his Thundershirt for fireworks after using all these steps for past years and for any thunderstorms when I can, but I wanted 0% nervous energy to affect the puppy.

Let's play Guess the Breed

I adopted Riggs while in vet school. He was evacuated from a shelter in Florida in 2017 due to Hurricane Irma and ended up in my junior surgery group in Georgia to be neutered when he was approximately 6 months old. All the dogs arrived in a van full of crates, and I arrived early to try and be the first to pick out a dog for my group to neuter. Despite finding him in a pile of vomit and covered in fleas, he was young and appeared healthy- a good choice for my surgery group. I immediately gave him a bath and got him settled into a kennel near our surgery suite.
He picked up basic commands quickly and over the weekend spent some time tailgating with all the Georgia fans. I knew that he definitely wasn't going back to the shelter but wasn't sure I was ready to take on a 3rd dog as I had two senior Boxers at the time. I took him home after the surgery, and he never left. I quickly discovered that he was afraid of car rides likely because he would get car sick after about 10 minutes. After he healed from the neuter- It took about two days of training until he would willingly jump in the car and multiple rides of increasing length until he no longer vomited. For several months, he was stuck at 45 minutes, so I would have to stop and get him out for 10 minutes to reset the clock. It's not like I was frequently driving for long distances while in vet school, but when I did, I realized I had more work to do with him. 🙄

He turned 6 years old in March, and I've often wondered what type of dog he is. I generally call him a Pointer mix although I also have another breed in mind. He's 50lbs, picks up tricks and new tasks quickly, protective of my home and vehicle, generally tolerant of other dogs and animals (but will get after a cow when asked), likes adults and kids, pink tongue, scissor bite, deep bark, medium brown eyes, expert lizard hunter/finder (flushes them out but has never caught one), and scared of all tools used for cleaning since day 1😆.
**Leave your guesses and any questions in the comments**

I finally ordered the Embark breed id + health test today.
I settled on Embark by using the very scientific eeny, meeny, miny, moe selection process. Based on my research, I can't confidently say that any test is superior. If you would like to do the same, use the link below for $50 off. I decided 6 years of curiosity is worth $149 plus I will get the added bonus of knowing if he has any genetic predispositions for the specific diseases that the test includes.

*Please research this breed*
This breed is high energy with a strong herding/heeling/working instinct and not suitable for sedentary lifestyles or apartment living. May not be good with free range chickens or small livestock such as goats; will also herd and heel (nip) your small children. These are innate behaviors of this breed and difficult to stop without dedicated and consistent training. Inexperienced owners with small children, free range chickens or other poultry, and/or small livestock without proper fencing, this is not the breed for you.

**You must meet the puppies and sign the contract in person prior to pick up - no exceptions.**

Be prepared to answer questions about your experience with Australian Cattle Dogs and your home environment. I am highly invested in the future of my puppies.

First I'd like to say what an amazing experience it was to be made an honorary chapter member of Steinbrenner High School FFA along with the Holloways.
So excited!
Today, I got to give back a little as some of the students in Ms. Switzer's Vet Assisting 3 class were able to help me castrate and vaccinate the chapter steer and goat. All my best lectures are given from inside a squeeze chute. There are now 4 fewer lug nuts at the Steinbrenner land lab.

Welcome to the world little heifer calf! 😍

She had a rough start to life and was a little slow to come around, but I had amazing helpers. Shout out to the owner, his brother, Hudson High School's Ag teacher, and one very cold student in shorts. In fact, they had the hardest part accomplished when I arrived. A little l**e...ok, a lot of l**e, and the rest of the calf came sliding out.
In my opinion, show stock heifers have the hardest time calving (dystocias), and are some of the most difficult pulls even when they present in the correct position.

It's not every day that I can get an accurate weight on a 2 month old bull calf and a 4.5 month old heifer using the goat scale, but when my patients are tiny mini highland calves, it works!
These two were dehorned yesterday adding them to a short list of fiesty highland cattle that can't try to spear their veterinarian.

Any guesses on the bull's weight?

Most of my mini pig patients aren't always very excited to see my truck pull in the driveway, but this new patient is happy with the results of his hoof trim today. He was recently rescued by his owner and should be able to really explore his new home now.
Mini pigs should have their feet trimmed every 6 to 8 months depending on their unique rate of hoof growth.
