Habitat 4 Hounds is a volunteer run, foster home based animal rescue. We are a GA state licensed, certified 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Macon, GA. Instead, we operate primarily through our foster homes and online databases. The majority of our rescues come from animal control facilities, where overcrowding leads to the euthanasia of millions of healthy, friendly pets every year. We

are committed to providing the animals that come into our rescue with love, structure and stability while they wait for their forever homes. We never euthanize animals due to space or time constraints. We also serve our community and adopters by educating and encouraging responsible pet ownership, with an emphasis on the need for spaying and neutering.

There are many ways to give back.
We participate in all of the above + helping the community with their pets. Whether through rescue or education. It all benefits the community as a whole.

I’ve been feeling under the weather lately. What should be a joyful season full of hustle & bustle and excitement has quickly given way to the weight of LIFE.

All we do is just a drop in a very large bucket. There’s so much more that needs to be done. The bucket often feels like it has a hole in it, and the effort, the pushing, the crawling, it never feels like it’s enough.

Some days, we have to disconnect, but a true disconnect isn’t possible because we have a houseful of animals that need us. I wish I could do more.

We’ve struggled through the past couple of years. This last year especially. Most of us in animal rescue hit a lull during the holidays, which we can’t accord right now.

Please consider donating to our fundraiser. It will be active through Monday.

Who remembers Elliot & Matilda? Picked up in Nowheresville, GA. Elliot had rear paralysis and had been dragging his rear end on hot asphalt for months. The bones on his feet were exposed and we weren’t sure we could save them. With determination and excellent vet care, Elliot’s feet healed completely! His sister, Matilda, was with him every step of the way. While it breaks my heart to know they lived this way, I am so grateful for the opportunity to love them and help them find their forever family. Their adoptive family is incredible, and from their adoption grew a friendship. My heart explodes every time their mom shares a photo of them.

With only a few hours left to Giving Tuesday, we want to say THANK YOU to everyone for donating and sharing. We appreciate all of the support we have received over the past 10 years. If not for you and your generosity, there would be no H4H.

Our campaign will run through Monday, so SHARE, SHARE, SHARE!

Every year, we participate in . It’s one of the biggest GIVING events of the year. We always set our goal at $2,000 and never quite get there. We hope you will join us for Giving Tuesday again this year and help us exceed our goal.

What is Giving Tuesday?
Giving Tuesday is a day that encourages people to give back in whatever ways they can. It presents nonprofit organizations with the chance to raise even more money than they would on an average day of giving.

And the hits keep coming.

In rescue, you rarely get to recover from one sadness before moving onto the next.

In 2020, we took in these two sweet faces, and that began our venture into ferret rescue. We have taken in several sick ferrets since, but Mochi and Mandu are the OG’s around here.

Mill (breeder/pet store) Ferrets often come with a list of expensive medical issues, and many don’t live beyond 6-7 years old.

Today, we will have to say goodbye to our sweet Mochi. After the loss of Jane this past weekend, this feels like a “kick me when I’m down” nightmare.

Once again, we cannot really afford this on top of trying to manage monthly operating expenses.

Please help us put her to rest. 😭

I have spent most of the weekend crying, which has triggered a massive headache, but you guys deserve an update.

Saturday was like any other day.
Jane was active and happy.

As most of you know, I suspected something was going on with her health-wise because she had lost quite a bit of weight and I had been unsuccessful at getting her to gain any. Even her muscle tone was down, and she has always been a short, stocky girl.

I spent several days trying to raise funds to pay on our vet bill + have diagnostics done to find the source of her weight loss.

I want to preface this by saying I NEVER want to be in the position I was in Saturday EVER again. The panic and helplessness was almost more than I could bare. We HAVE to do better, and if we can’t, we need to shut down now.

I cannot face delaying care or losing an animal because I cannot afford their care. That isn’t rescue. And while all of us operate at a deficit, to realize we don’t even have adequate support for the animals we chose to rescue to give a better life… the feeling is horrendous.

I left for about 15 minutes to run an errand Saturday afternoon. Jane was fine at 5pm, but when I got back at 515, I smelled something that seemed off. I went to her crate to let her out, and I could tell something was wrong. When she stepped out of her crate, she was very bloated. I immediately loaded her in the car and started making calls.

The only option was the ER vet in Warner Robins.
A 30 minute drive that felt like an eternity.
It’s $500 to walk in the door.

I was able to get her in with the help a fellow rescuer, and within 5 minutes, they told me Jane had GDV. Bloat with torsion (her stomach had flipped/twisted). The surgery was $7500-$8500.

After discussing her age and recent health concerns, the decision was made to let her go. The GDV was more than likely secondary to something terminal, and at 12 years old, she probably would not have survived the surgery.

But THE GUILT. I cannot explain to you how awful I feel.

I cannot begin to describe how much Jane’s death has ripped my heart to shreds.

I’ve been involved in rescue well over 10 years. Many more, if you count my general love for animals majority of my life.

I have had HUNDREDS of fosters. I’ve loved all of them, but sometimes, you get one that’s hard to let go of.

Jane was special, and I’m glad no one ever wanted her.

I’m so hurt, and I’ve cried more for her than I have for any dog… probably ever.

It doesn’t feel natural to end an animal’s life, even when it’s the right thing to do.

***************

Please consider donating to her ER visit.
There is absolutely no way we can cover the cost.
We have not received the bill yet, and we are grateful they didn’t require payment that night, but I know it will be more than $500.

After 10+ years…

I’m too soft for rescue.
It will eat you alive.

I’m so sorry, Jane. 😭
You were truly the best foster ever.
