I can’t believe it’s already November! It may be getting colder, but remember, bodywork maintenance is still important for your equine partner during the colder months.

Another reminder that during my sessions, I supplement the visit with targeted red light therapy to prolong your horses benefits.

Red Light Therapy is also known as low laser level therapy (LLLT), low power laser therapy (LPLT) and photobiomodulation (PMB). It is a non-invasive technique that enhances blood supply to the targeted area and helps accelerate tissue restoration on a cellular level. Visible red light is efficiently absorbed by the photoreceptors in cells, and once absorbed, the lights’ energy kickstarts a series of metabolic events such as the increase of blood flow.

For a better understanding; the release of low-level wavelengths helps pe*****te the skin, reaching our cell’s mitochondria. This action then stimulates the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP); which is the main energy source for cells. The boost of ATP levels has been shown to improve skin health, muscle recovery, alleviation of pain and wound healing.

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. I’m always happy to help your partner feel their absolute best!

SKELETAL DEVELOPMENT should be considered more when we are developing young horses.

I’m not a trainer, and I can appreciate the idea of introducing tack and weight to young horses…slowly and mindfully while keeping the work light enough that the skeletal maturity is allowed for.

What I do wish I saw more of-is developing biomechanical balance in young horses from the ground before introducing tack and rider weight.

From the bodyworker perspective-the most common areas of soreness I see in ridden horses are the areas of the skeletal system that mature last…

While it’s not a clinical study by any means-but with well over 1000’s of massages under my hands I see enough of a correlation to be convinced we are doing too much too soon. More common than not-I see biomechanical imbalances in horses (of all ages) attempting to be corrected under saddle instead of in hand, which creates various compensation patterns elsewhere in the body.

I had these images created for my online classes to help owners and professionals better understand how the maturity timeline can impact performance development.

I share these thoughts in an effort to bring mindful awareness-never to criticize. I hope to see more ridden horses making it to their teens before they’re needing pharmaceutical intervention instead of the 5-10 year olds I see now.
The best time to learn new things and do better for the horse is now.

Oh the pectorals. We as horsemen need to acknowledge that the “girthy” or “cinchy” horse that is giving you attitude, is only trying to communicate with you. We need to always consider physical issues before addressing this as a behavioral issue. These groups of muscles play a vital role in the stabilization and movements of the forelimbs. They help to adduct, extend, flex and support which is highly important for overall musculoskeletal function. Especially when horses put 60% of their body weight on their forequarters.

Remember that proper conditioning, strengthening and stretching of the pectorals can help prevent injuries and improve performance. It is highly important to provide proper fitting equipment to prevent such things as well.

We owe it to our horses to find the root cause of discomfort and not ignore those signs. It’s easy to play off certain body language as, “oh, she’s just being a mare” or “oh, he’s just grumpy during cinching up”.

No, no. You need to listen to your horse. Sure, the physical issue has how turned into a behavioral one. But again, finding the root of the problem is going to be the most beneficial in the long run. You owe them that much. So let’s continue to keep your horse feeling their absolute best, no matter their age or discipline.

Another trip spent this weekend taking care of horses in the U.P. Now, did the beginning of the trip go as planned? No. But it was still a success, none the less. I am so thankful to have such amazing clients that were flexible with my arrival. I’m already looking forward to my next visit!

And also very thankful to have prompt and friendly customer service at Bergstrom Toyota of Oshkosh to get myself back on the road.
