Southern Alliance for People & Animal Welfare - Safpaw

Southern Alliance for People & Animal Welfare - Safpaw SAFPAW believes in knocking down poverty obstacles that exist for those we serve and their pets.

The Southern Alliance for People and Animal Welfare (SAFPAW) is a local non-profit serving Davidson County by working to improve the quality of life in our community for people and pets in need. SAFPAW provides pet food, supplies, and veterinary care free of charge pet owners who are homeless, or living at or below the poverty level. Our weekly Spay/Neuter Transport picks up every Thursday morning

and brings each pet back that same evening. Animals are spayed or neutered, fully vaccinated, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks and nails trimmed. In addition our weekly transport helps with basic wellness pet needs. Our homeless outreach program provides food, camping supplies, and other basic needs to those we serve. We also assist those looking to secure more permanent housing by helping with transportation, acquiring necessary IDs (such as social security card, state ID or drivers license, birth certificate, etc.), working through the application process, and everything in-between, including move-in day! SAFPAW is able to make a tremendous positive impact in the lives of people and pets throughout Davidson County, but only with the help of our generous and compassionate community. Swing by our page at Southern Alliance for People & Animal Welfare - SAFPAW and "Like" us to stay up to date on all of the amazing work being done every day. And don't forget to come check out our website too (www.safpaw.org) and consider making a donation so that we can all continue to build our community better and stronger every day!

I will always believe that compassion matters and that giving mercy and grace is what makes us human. No matter what surrounds us I believe in mercy.

When we make deliveries I see in front of me someone hurting. I see myself, if safety nets had not caught me as I was falling.

These supplies that we deliver, they are about more than the survival of a night cold enough to take someone’s life. They are about telling that person that they are that important even if they don’t see themselves that way.

Thank you for being the reason we were able to put boots on the ground this week.

When a nonprofit gets down to what is absolutely necessary.

SAFPAW is boots on the ground. We are not wealthy, our donations are made to get things done for the animals and people we serve and not sit comfortably in a bank. But we do serve and we do get things done. And no, we don’t claim to be the only outreach group. Indeed I will tell you that all organizations serving people not permanently housed, we need each other.

But we serve animals and people. We see all souls in need as equal. Our SAFPAW sanctuary houses animals and people who have struggled to survive the streets. From the first couple who came to live with us in 2016 we have continued to give respite to those needing us.

In this picture you see a small sampling of our weekly sanctuary needs. We go through 4 large bags of Iams cat food every week. Two large bags of Iams dog food every month. 10 pails of Tidy Cat “light weight” cat litter each week. Two cases of wet cat food a week. These needs are separate from the needs of our Pet Food Pantry.

During the dangerously cold weeks we distribute around 200 (16 ounce) size canisters of propane every week. Along with camping heaters, tents and sleeping bags we are determined that the streets should not cause anyone to freeze to death. Nor their companion animal.

All of our programs were born from the need I saw back in 2000. Now a nonprofit, if we are sincere and without ego, works to put itself out of the need they serve. However a perfect world may never be within our reach. So, the goal before us is to serve with a determination to not be needed by those we serve yet remain steady for those who come before us with need.

And that is where our partnership comes in. SAFPAW will continue to put boots on the ground. But we need you to make sure we always have the financial resources to serve.

We are heading out today with more propane and winter supplies. Tonight through to Thursday night will be brutal and next week it looks like Sunday through Thursday will also be dangerously cold.

I am so grateful for all who donated over the Holidays. Winter time is expensive for the people and animals we serve but the winter supplies save lives.

We need you year round, so please do know that. And to the folks who have contacted us about volunteering and even adopting our rescue animals…I will be getting in touch. If you don’t hear from us this week let me know and I’ll make your call back priority!

Our immediate needs are:
4 person tents
Sleeping bags
Blankets (gently used but clean accepted!)
16 oz propane canisters
Buddy (camping) heaters
Large, sturdy tarps
Dry dog & cat food (12-15 pound size)
Fast food gift cards

With gratitude,
Laurie Green
