Hello everyone, many have reached out asking what they can do to help the shelter in this trying time. We have written a short list below— please consider sharing this post for all of the public’s information 👇
1. Spay or neuter your pets, and educate others who don’t know about it yet! Many shelters all over are overwhelmed with unwanted, accidental or poorly planned litters of dogs and cats. Our parish has a spay and neuter voucher program for parish residents. Go to https://sttammanyparish.rja.revize.com/forms/8164 to apply for yours!
1.5 Report nonpermitted animal breeders to STPAS by identifying the address where the animals are being bred or sold. All breeders having more than one litter per year must obtain an Animal Establishment Permit through STPAS. If you are buying an animal, always verify the breeder has a permit through their county or parish and ask them to show it to you! You can file a report anonymously at 985-809-0183.
2. Consider adoption! There are so many homeless animals in shelters across the country, often through no fault of their own. The most immediate way anyone can help ANY animal shelter is by adopting an animal! We want to make perfect matches for the animals benefit and yours— and we’re sure we have somebody for everybody here at STPAS! Check out our available animals by browsing our page here, or go to www.stpgov.org/pets
2.5 tag your friends and relatives in our posts when you see something you’d think they’d love!
3. Can’t commit to the cost of owning a pet right now but want to help with shelter space issues? How about fostering an animal with us? The shelter retains ownership of the animal and pays for food and any medicines, you simply just need to provide the couch for them to crash on! Become a foster with STPAS by applying here: www.fosterkeeper.com
4. Can’t adopt or foster? Have you considered volunteering? We need volunteers for everything from walking pups, cuddling cats (behavioral enrichment, socialization) to helping clean laundry, dishes and cages! We can always use an extra hand or two (or seven)! Have a talent you think would benefit our shelter system? Shoot our volunteer coordinator Daylyn an email at [email protected] and let us know— we would love to add to our volunteer legion of animal lovers in our community!
5. Spread the word! Talk to your friends and family about your community shelter, and visit often! Let everyone know what’s going at STPAS or your local shelter by sharing their social media posts — whether that be adoptable animals, impounded animals, event promotions, or needs — make use of that share button — it could change the life of a shelter animal by someone seeing something you shared - like the butterfly effect! It’s the easiest way to make a difference at any shelter in your community!
6. Donate! Did you know you could donate directly to the shelter from our Amazon list for needed supplies? You can also bring in newspaper, lightly used towels, or washcloths — we’re always in need of those! Here’s the link to our wishlist ➡️ https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/3AFODJ5BVUTBX?fbclid=IwAR3fLeDckbmspUBdU3oMR4vQ8nKhW8aBqdMuS96FHXKEhPXu19G-Q68IEdU_aem_AZKC99cUVoevg9vGj02IjwazEJYEhtnH83h7jIPJXHyeNdrygW-tjUiDqhtrZqSyOLQ
We here at STPAS appreciate all of our St. Tammany community’s support, and hope that we will see some of you in the near future either at our shelter Monday through Saturday at 31078 Highway 36 in Lacombe, or at any of our planned adoption events! We are currently waiving ALL adoption fees on ALL of our animals now until the end of March, so if you’re in the market for a new best friend, don’t delay — come and see us at Animal Services in Lacombe!
