First intake of the season came in tonight. A very large adult male raccoon. DOA, and suspect he had distemper šŸ˜¢ At least he passed in a warm blanket and was treated with love and kindness by the man who found him and brought him from the Conroe or Willis area to me.

My vet did a xenotransfusion with two of the baby gray foxes when they had severe blood loss from hookworms. It was an amazing experience to see and be a part of!

Similar, but very different. Foxes, coyotes and domestic dogs are all in the canid family - but they are different species. Coyotes and dogs have the same number of chromosomes so it is possible for them to produce offspring known as coydogs - though this doesnā€™t commonly happen. Foxes can not produce offspring with coyotes or dogs as they have a different number of chromosomes.

Even more interesting - it is possible for both coyotes and foxes to receive blood transfusions from domestic dogs in an emergency situation. When blood is donated from one species to another, it is called a xenotransfusion.

With a lot of our wildlife suffering from secondary rodenticide poisoning, wildlife clinics in the US and Canada have begun using xenotransfusions with some of our predator species to give them a chance at survival.

We talk to wildlife clinics and wildlife rehabbers around the world and itā€™s heartwarming to see all the good that humans are capable of and what these people are willing to do to give these animals a second chance. ā¤ļø

Well, they either were not pleased with the weather or they were upset about their cage being partially covered, as they didnā€™t eat much last night.
However, they looked fine when I went out and didnā€™t seem like they were too mad about being out in the cold.

Two weeks post intake. She is doing so much better now compared to when she first came in, on deathā€™s door, two weeks again. She has progressed to having access to both the top and bottom of the cage, and is eating some on her own. She is still being supplementally fed to make sure she gets all her nutrients.

The jury is still out on her prognosis and what her future holds, but for now she is happy and enjoying her variety of foods.

Now that she is active and able to burrow herself in her bedding she s lost the heating pad privileges. Donā€™t need that chewed into šŸ˜‚

Squirrel with MBD and brain injury

I died today. But it wasnā€™t that bad.

My nose was telling me where to go, I needed to find a mate. I didnā€™t know it was dangerous.

I was hit by a car and left in the road. It was cold and I was scared. My whole body hurt.

Someone saw me and took me to a warm, safe place with a person who said she could help me.

She gave me some medicine, cleaned up my wounds, and told me I was beautiful. I was scared but she was nicer than I thought they were.

I got a warm bed, it was quiet and I could finally breathe.

I was given food but I didnā€™t have an appetite. It smelled so good but I was too tired to eat it. I drank a lot of water, it sure was good. She put some food in my mouth. It wasnā€™t very good but she said it would help me gain weight.

My body was tired. I was old. I couldā€™ve fought but it was so nice to just sleep.

She checked on me a lot. The last time she came in, it was different. I didnā€™t try to run from her like normally. I looked into her eyes and she said it would all be okay.

I took some medicine. She said she was sorry and that I deserved better. She talked about how she was happy I didnā€™t die a long and painful death in the freezing cold. She said she was proud of me and that in my next life, Iā€™ll be a big eagle and Iā€™ll soar through the sky with ease.

I was warm and cozy. The pain finally went away. I closed my eyes and went to sleep.

I died today. But it wasnā€™t that bad. Iā€™m free now.

Itā€™s been forever since Iā€™ve posted as life has been super busy the last few months. But Iā€™m still taking in animals when I can. Last week I got in the sweet juvenile barred owl.
He has a wingtip fracture which is preventing him from flying but is doing great in rehab. I passed him to a fellow rehabber who is helping him live as good of a life as he can while heā€™s recuperating.
His name is Al, because voice to talk kept typing out ā€œAlā€ instead of ā€œowlā€.
