Two weeks post intake. She is doing so much better now compared to when she first came in, on death’s door, two weeks again. She has progressed to having access to both the top and bottom of the cage, and is eating some on her own. She is still being supplementally fed to make sure she gets all her nutrients.

The jury is still out on her prognosis and what her future holds, but for now she is happy and enjoying her variety of foods.

Now that she is active and able to burrow herself in her bedding she s lost the heating pad privileges. Don’t need that chewed into 😂

Squirrel with MBD and brain injury

I died today. But it wasn’t that bad.

My nose was telling me where to go, I needed to find a mate. I didn’t know it was dangerous.

I was hit by a car and left in the road. It was cold and I was scared. My whole body hurt.

Someone saw me and took me to a warm, safe place with a person who said she could help me.

She gave me some medicine, cleaned up my wounds, and told me I was beautiful. I was scared but she was nicer than I thought they were.

I got a warm bed, it was quiet and I could finally breathe.

I was given food but I didn’t have an appetite. It smelled so good but I was too tired to eat it. I drank a lot of water, it sure was good. She put some food in my mouth. It wasn’t very good but she said it would help me gain weight.

My body was tired. I was old. I could’ve fought but it was so nice to just sleep.

She checked on me a lot. The last time she came in, it was different. I didn’t try to run from her like normally. I looked into her eyes and she said it would all be okay.

I took some medicine. She said she was sorry and that I deserved better. She talked about how she was happy I didn’t die a long and painful death in the freezing cold. She said she was proud of me and that in my next life, I’ll be a big eagle and I’ll soar through the sky with ease.

I was warm and cozy. The pain finally went away. I closed my eyes and went to sleep.

I died today. But it wasn’t that bad. I’m free now.

It’s been forever since I’ve posted as life has been super busy the last few months. But I’m still taking in animals when I can. Last week I got in the sweet juvenile barred owl.
He has a wingtip fracture which is preventing him from flying but is doing great in rehab. I passed him to a fellow rehabber who is helping him live as good of a life as he can while he’s recuperating.
His name is Al, because voice to talk kept typing out “Al” instead of “owl”.

Have had this little girl for two and a half weeks. She’s finally getting a little more used to me. Single baby that was following humans around and unsuccessful reuniting.

Sometimes there are awesome success stories. This sweet girl had a little run in with a car Monday and got rolled a bit. At first several thought she had passed on. She eventually made her way from the creek she landed in to a nearby yard.

I went over to check on her, as the homeowner knew she was in need of medical attention. After evaluating her it was observed that she had several superficial cuts, no broken bones, but a pretty significant head injury. Because of her age/size and the fact that she was still able to struggle against us trying to move her, we quickly got her up near the house and let her be for the night.

The next morning she had moved to several different areas in the yard. She was still very dazed, and had some a**l bleeding, but otherwise appeared okay. Treated her with subcutaneous fluids and two pain medications, cleaned her wounds and left to pick up an antibiotic injection from my vet. When I arrived back her mom and other members of their gang were in the yard and she was standing with mom and mom was tending to her.

Last night she was bedded down and seemed comfortable. This morning she was nowhere to be found. I checked again late afternoon and saw a handful of deer and fawn in the yard. Not completely sure if one was her as I couldn’t get super close without them trotting away but the fact that she was able to get up and move around yesterday, paired with not seeing her in any nearby lawns, forest or ditches leads me to believe she is doing well and just needed a little bit of time and TLC to recover from her injuries.

Thank you to those who donated to cover her medical expenses and to support our efforts of caring for our local wildlife!

This little guy was brought to me last night.
Sometimes all we can do is offer them a quiet, warm and safe place to pass, outside of the threat of weather or animals that will make the end of their life even more miserable than what they are experiencing.

He was super thin and dehydrated and had the start of mange. I’m not sure if there was any other illness as he started seizing upon transferring him from the live trap to a kennel. He passed sometime during the night.

Fly high, baby. At least you’re not in pain any longer.

Meet Torti. Mississippi Kite, victim of the hurticane. I am finally open to taking animals again.

This kid came in yesterday, severally dehydrated and emaciated, with torticollis. This is a head tilt that can be caused by several different things. You can look it up.

We spent all last night and today hydrating on with lactated ringers and a small amount of LRS with dextrose. Tonight introduced a very small amount of bland powdered bird food (mixed with water) and then will continue with the LRS for the remainder of the evening/night. Will try medication for the torticollis but I don’t have high hopes for this little guy if this is an injury from his fall vs a nutritional/vitamin deficiency.

If he does recover and when he is older he will be transferred to a facility that will have the caging of appropriate size for him to receive flight conditioning before release.

After a little over a month of the babies being inside the rehab room, and two weeks of fox mama being inside with them, they were finally all moved back out to their cage yesterday! Bonus surprise, they had a new addition to their cage, doubling it in size, AND Luna moved in permanently with them all.

They seem to like the extra space and the huge platform they can get up and sleep on. It’s my first time using straw and I may have went a little overboard on the amount I put in there, but it doesn’t seem to bother them.

I moved Luna’s cat wheel out there and she and at least one of the babies (Red) has been enjoying it. I can’t wait till we get electricity out there so I can put a fan out to blow the flies away from their food. 🤮

Enjoy this photo dump, though some pics of them may be hard to see.
