Idlewilde Farm

Idlewilde Farm Started in 2005, fast forward to 2020 and we are now transitioning to conservation efforts.

After years of experimenting with crop alternatives, we found native Hawaiian plants do the best so we’re following the lead of the aina.

In exploring the best way to grow mamaki, rather than adjust fertilizer and water, we adjusted location. This is in line with Hawaiian sustainability philosophies of helping plants thrive in their natural habitats rather than move them to a new location. In contrast, we are used to moving a plant to where we want it and then researching why the bugs are eating it or its leaves are falling off. Ha! I still do this!

In this case, we found a wonderful neighborhood for mamaki plants! 🎯 Win win🤙🏼🌳🛀.

Just a few things I noticed around the farm this week…The ‘a’alii are blooming, the goofy hens still love laying fresh eggs on the tractor and an undisturbed hapu tree fern showing a long history of not being trimmed.

Idlewilde sits right in the middle of these two weather systems. I asked Chat GPT about them.

The legends of Naulu and Ukiukiu are deeply rooted in Hawaiian mythology and are connected to the weather patterns observed on Haleakalā. These legends personify the distinct weather phenomena experienced on the mountain.

Naulu is associated with the clouds and rain that frequently come from the southeast. According to legend, Naulu is a goddess who brings mist and rain to Haleakalā. She is known to cloak the mountain in clouds, bringing life-giving moisture to the land. Her presence is often felt in the afternoon when the trade winds shift and carry clouds and rain up the slopes of the mountain.

Ukiukiu, on the other hand, represents the colder, drier winds that come from the north. In the legends, Ukiukiu is depicted as a god who brings clear skies and cool, dry weather. These winds are often associated with the winter season and can bring a distinct chill to the air on Haleakalā.

The interaction between Naulu and Ukiukiu is a poetic representation of the dynamic weather patterns on Haleakalā. When Naulu’s clouds and rain meet Ukiukiu’s cold, dry winds, it creates a unique and often dramatic interplay of weather. This can result in rapidly changing conditions on the mountain, from clear skies to sudden mist and rain, reflecting the balance and tension between these two forces.

These legends not only explain the natural phenomena but also highlight the deep connection the Hawaiian people have with their environment, personifying the elements and viewing them as deities who play vital roles in the life and culture of the islands.

Wonderful session this morning and we all put roots down with a new koa sapling. Jenny & I will tend to these new sprouts and look forward to a reunion down the road.
