Idlewilde Farm

Idlewilde Farm Started in 2005, fast forward to 2020 and we are now transitioning to conservation efforts.

After years of experimenting with crop alternatives, we found native Hawaiian plants do the best so we’re following the lead of the aina.

Clermontia arborescens. In Hawaiian it can be called Hāhā, Ōhā, Ōhā wai or Ōhā wai nui. These grow nearby in the Makawao Forest Reserve and they sure are happy. I’ll go back soon to catch them with buds open and blooming. Someday our restoration areas will be mature enough for these to join in.

Planted our first Ohe Mauka tree. A gift from a wonderful community just down the road. Also some new Ohia growth among the clovers. And some new gorse sprouts popping up in a few of the Ohia plantings!

One of our native sandalwood has produced berries! More validation from the ‘āina that these native plants are the best intended residents.

Cousin Aina is a smooth operator in this excavator. Clearing this space along the fence will also let in more breeze and light. All good for the 142 Ohia and 80 koa seedlings already in the ground, safely on the other side of the fence.

Clearing out 125 year old, and dead, eucalyptus. Working on minimizing the risk to our deer fence. One storm could open a spot in our perimeter and those deer love yummy koa! Even one night could be devastating. Mahalo to the crew kicking butt up here bell to bell.

I planted these native koa on Thanksgiving day and 3 months later they are all very happy. As I think of their future it occurred to me that in another 80-100 years some might be ready to become Wa’a. Hawaiian canoes. Not many will be good candidates as it should be. The plan is not to harvest these trees but to start a forest. I appreciate the idea that they can be watched over by a community in partnership for generations. Like it was before. When only a sacred few were taken for Wa’a, and the rest were left to live undisturbed.

40 more Ohia should round out the 3 acres. Got them a little bigger this time and most are from cuttings so we’ll know their color. Lots of yellow and orange 🤙🏼.

A fresh coat of caulk and paint every 20 years whether it needs it or not 🤙🏼. Mahalos to Steve Knox for his aloha.
