So, my daughter says, “Mom, why do you keep all these old doors in the shed?”
And I told her, “Because someday, I’ll build us a porch where we can sit and watch the light change.”
She rolled her eyes the kind of look only a teenager can give but helped me drag them out anyway.
Nine doors. Two broken pallets. A mismatched collection of memories I just couldn’t throw away. One of those doors used to be in my grandmother’s kitchen. I remember standing on the tips of my toes, peeking through the window while she made peach pie. Another came from the house where we brought my daughter home from the hospital. The creak it makes? Still sounds like her giggle when she was three.
I never planned it, really. I just started propping pieces together in the backyard. At first, it looked ridiculous. But something about it felt… right. Like I wasn’t building a structure, I was stitching time together.
And then, the real magic happened my husband (who never touches “my junk projects from the Tedooo app,” as he calls them) surprised me one morning with two thrifted chairs, a tiny table, and the words:
“If you’re building a porch, it needs a place for coffee.”
We finished it in two weekends.
I sewed the curtains. He arranged the table and chairs.
Our daughter painted the little birds and named them “Hope” and “Patience” (because “that’s what it took to finish this weird shack,” she said).
And right as I was about to post this, I got a ping in my Tedooo app. A message from a handmade crafter I’d followed for years saying:
“Hey, I just listed some stained glass panels. Thought of you.”
That panel now hangs here too and it catches morning light like it was always meant to.
We use this space like a tea room! It’s just our place. A little memory porch stitched together by love, splinters, and second chances.
If you see this and feel something tug inside maybe that’s your sign. Don’t wait for the perfect plan.
Start with a door. And build yourself a place to breathe again.
