Puppy update - they've grown so much and we love getting updates from their families!

Shadow has her normal coat back after losing hair from nursing and weaning but hasn't gotten back down to pre-pregancy weight! 😂 She's currently at about 67 lbs, nearly 10 lbs heavier than before, but we'll call it muscle from her running and canicross. 💪💪🏃‍♀️‍➡️

Said farewell to 5 of the 6 puppies this weekend! Freyja has a few more days to learn from mom before she joins her new family!

The house is already noticeably calmer and 5 familes now have their own little bundles of s***k to keep them on their toes!

We are thankful for our time with the puppies, but we are even more thankful for all the wonderful families they now have! Just a few more days before they head out.

We have been working on the "sit" command using treats as an incentive. When they get over the initial excitement, they are doing pretty well! All the puppies are very food motivated which will help their new familes immensely with training!

When the puppies are done playing, they put themselves to bed in their crate. It's a place they feel safe and warm. They also never use the bathroom in it! Most of the time they use the "potty corner". Sometimes, they forget and use the play area, but never their crate. At this stage the door stays open so they can potty whenever the need to. If their new familes plan to crate train (which I highly recommend) they will start closing the door when they are napping, and take them to go potty when they wake up. Pottu and crate training go hand in hand! You then slowly build up the time in the crate as they grow until they are comfortable spending the night! Shadow has run of the house 90% of the time, but the crate is a very useful tool to fall back on during times she is in the way, we have people over who dislike dogs, or when I need to leave and I know she isn't in the right headspace to be left alone (separation anxiety). Shadow has chewed many of MY things, but never anything while in her crate. There she knows exactly what to do - lay down and rest.

Whining is not something Shadow usually does, but the last few days she has done so at the door to the puppy room. I feel like she is picking up that her nursing days are nearing an end. The puppies have been eating a full diet of dog food for 2 weeks already, and she has only let them nurse for a few minutes at a time, but she was always ready and willing. Today she went in her crate with the puppies piled on top to nurse them one last time - which only lasted for about a minute! Tomorrow they turn 6 weeks old and it's time for them to grow up! You did good Shadowfax, time to dry up those nunners and get your running body back! ❤️ 💙 💜

Momma post!

Now that we have begun the weaning process, Shadow is getting some much needed time away. This week she spent a few hours in the office where she got to try on some spooky costums. Last week we started running again - we did an easy 3 miles on the road early in the week before doing 6 on the trail. She's ready to get back to full speed (me not so much!)

The puppies are eating great and love meal time! They also love momma meal time a whole lot more than momma does, but she is good at finding balance.

Momma spotlight! Shout out to Shadowfax who has embraced motherhood without breaking stride. I can tell she's so bored and ready to be out running with me, but continues to take good care of her babies.

As for the puppies, teeth have begun emerging! Next week we'll introduce softened food and see how they like it!

I hope to let Shadow resume some activity once the pups start weaning!

Pupdate: Gimli is **Reserved**
While he was originally named after a dwarf fighter, his new name will mean "strong protector". It's a perfect match! ❤️

Now that the pups are 2 weeks old, we are taking visits from prospective families! We have 3 females and 2 males available. They will be ready to go home on November 26th.

Today we had our first nail trim! Just took the tips off those little daggers and grabbed a few photos in the process. Full disclosure - no idea which is which without their collars visible! 🤣

We've got 6 Shadowbabies! Everyone appears to be healthy but we will be keeping an extra close eye the next few days! I'll be calling the vet first thing in the morning to schedule tail docking and dew claw removal - this happens within a few days of birth before they really feel pain.

**Birth Story**
Saturday night I had a feeling would be the night, so I decided to camp out in the puppy room with Shadow. I set up my camping mat on the floor next to the whelping box where she was and went to bed. Around 3am I was awakened out of my slumber in a confused daze to the sound of puppy squeals. . .in the other room. I got up to find Shadow had snuck around me, got past the baby gate I forgot to shut, and had given birth to a puppy on my bed. (At least she had the decency to move my pillow out of the way! 🤦‍♀️) In a slight panic, I quickly moved the puppy to the whelping box - Shadow followed, but stopped to lay down on my temporary bed next to the whelping box and get that messy. I finally got her in the correct place, and realized there was still puppy squeals coming from the other room! A puppy had fallen between the mattress and headboard and was on the floor under the bed. I had to move the entire bed out of the way in order to reach it. Shadows licker was going a mile a minute cleaning up the puppies but before long another two puppies popped out within a few minutes of each other, keeping her busy. About two hours passed and I thought she may be done, but two more decided to appear! Shadow did a great job getting them all cleaned up and once they were nearly dry, I saw her give a big sigh of relief, and she relaxed. It was a bit hectic there for a while but we made it through! 🙌
