It’s been a busy two weeks for the Lancaster CART. On Sunday, September 8th, our members participated in simultaneous public events in Salunga and Lancaster City. On Wednesday, September 11th, we attended Mission BBQ’s event honoring area responders. On Saturday the 14th, we joined our partners at Lancaster County Department of Public Safety at their 1st annual Preparedness Day event at the Lancaster Farm & Home Center. We followed that event with a Pet First Aid/CPR course at the Lafayette Fire Company on Sunday the 15th. The class was taught by Dr. Erica from Lehigh Valley CART.

We’d like to thank our all-volunteer members for their time and dedication, as well as our partners in the community for the invitations and collaboration.

Late last night, Lancaster CART members assisted Columbia Borough Fire Department Station 80 at a residential structure fire. One dog and six kittens were retrieved from the home. Due to the owner needing medical attention at the hospital, CART members volunteered to foster the animals overnight while a more definitive care situation can be worked out. CART members made runs to Walmart to get food for the dog and special formula and bottles to feed the kittens every two hours due to them being very young.

We appreciate every one of our volunteer members that have given their time (and money) to making the revitalization of our team possible.

If you would like to donate to Lancaster CART, please visit https://www.paanimalresponse.org/donate/ and put “Lancaster County” in the notes field. We greatly appreciate any support!

Late Saturday afternoon, The Lancaster CART was dispatched to the Kensington Club Apartments to assist at the scene of a structure fire.

CART members worked directly with Lancaster Township Emergency Management and American Red Cross personnel to provide free food, water, blankets, and leashes to displaced animals from the affected building. Unfortunately, two pets did not survive the blaze. Our thoughts go out to all the families affected by this fire.

A special thanks goes out to HazMat 2 Environmental Fire Rescue Company for helping us transport our response trailer to and from the scene.

Lancaster CART is an-volunteer organization that relies on donations to help us provide services during emergencies and disasters. If you would like to make a tax deductible donation to our team, visit https://www.paanimalresponse.org/donate/ and type in”Lancaster County” in the notes field.

As the potential for severe weather increases throughout hurricane season, it is important to have a plan in place before emergencies occur. This includes for our farms and agriculture.

During a flood:
🌧 Move or evacuate livestock and horses to higher ground.
🌧Keep gates or buildings open so they can escape high water.
🌧Provide access to safe free-choice food source, clean water and the safest living areas possible.

On Saturday and Sunday the Lancaster County, PA Animal Response Team - CART, in conjunction with the Brunnerville Fire Company, hosted a Large Animal Response course which was facilitated by Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency, Pennsylvania Animal Response Team, and sponsored by the South Central Task Force (SCTF). 17 students representing CART teams from Lancaster and York Counties, Brunnerville Fire, and the PA Animal Response Team were on hand to learn these skills.

Two instructors, Ed and Tammy, from Washington County Animal Response Team spent two days covering specific topics related to equine health and responses to various types of equine emergencies. For a majority of the course, the SCTF’s 700+ pound horse mannequin, named “Lucky”, was used for the practical portions of the course. Lucky was also affectionately named “Bolt” and “Mayo” by students throughout the class. Class-goers also had a chance to work with a live horse named “Diamond” who came from a nearby farm.

The final two evolutions involved assistance from
EAS Towing & Recovery using their 35 ton wrecker to lift the horse. Using a tow truck was a first for the instructors and we are thankful EAS was able to join us.

We are truly grateful for all the support offered by our partners to make this class happen. There’s no way we would be able to afford running a course like this on our own. We hope this is just the beginning of some great working relationships that will help make our team and mission successful!

Yesterday, members of the Pennsylvania Animal Response Team (PART) and Westmoreland / Fayette / Allegheny County Animal Response Team presented two training sessions covering an overview of county animal response teams in the state. 42 students representing law enforcement, the fire service, emergency management, 9-1-1, human services, and agriculture attended. The groups learned about the CART programs and were able to see the equipment that Lancaster County's rebuilt team has ready for deployment. We are excited to continue to grow as a team and be able to help pets and livestock in an emergency.

Our 501(c)3 team is all-volunteer and depends on donations to purchase safety and rescue equipment for our members and to assist animals. If you would like to make a donation, visit paanimalresponse.org and click on "DONATE" at the top of the page. In the notes field, type "For Lancaster County". We greatly appreciate any support!
