Spencer was exhibiting full prey drive during our walk today. To work through his energy, we used different forms of play to bring his drive back to me when changing direction and food is not working.
Breaking up our hike with a little flow session! Dogs learn and connect with others best when in a state of drive. We’re playing tug and practicing our pushing exercise in this video. Notice how I don’t use an out for the tug, I have Hermione push instead. The focus early on is to promote and build drive with the handler. Teaching an out too soon suppresses drive. Obedience gets worked into the equation naturally once we find good flow❤️ #naturaldogtraining #holistictraining #drivetraining #dogsofsyracuse
Have a herding dog? Get them a herding ball!! They NEED to control movement, and if you don’t provide an outlet for that instinct they will find one! And it probably won’t be an outlet you appreciate🤪 We highly recommend CollieBall💯 For those local to CNY, we bring our CollieBall to all consults to see if it’s a good fulfillment option for your pup!
Dakota received her CollieBall today!
She is an air-bud dog and this is perfect for her! Collie balls stimulate your working/herding breed dogs mentally and physically!

Following up on our video about using a pressure-release system on a prong collar..you can use this system on any tool! My tool preference depends on the dog and what we’re doing. The tools themselves aren’t the problem (or the magic solution), it’s how we use them!
(Part 1 of 2..part 2 is the same technique using a harness). There’s a lot of controversy surrounding prong collars, so we wanted to weigh in and provide a brief explanation on how we use this tool for dog walking, when we choose to use it. We teach the same set of walking exercises with all walking tools. Dogs must understand the pressure-release system on whatever tool we’re using. The dog walks away from us and creates leash tension, it’s up to them resolve that issue. The more important aspect of acheiving enjoyable walks is the time and consistency you put into working WITH your dog. No tool is a magic fix for your walks. We will recommend the prong to aid in better communication with dogs who need more clarity with this pressure-release system. We choose not to use pop corrections to correct/suppress behavior. Shoot us a message if you have any questions about prongs and how we choose to use them. They don’t have to be a scary tool. Stay tuned for a new blog post coming soon about what the best tool is for walking your dog!🦮#dogwalking #walkingtips #dogmom #dogtrainingtips

Taking a car ride and parking in a village setting or a parking lot (Wegmans is great!) to watch the world is perfect for cold evenings like this one.

Temps are too low for my dogs here in CNY right now, but we’re still getting out!

This is also a great idea for any owners who are nervous to take their dog out in public. It’s a small, simple step that doesn’t require you to get out of your car.
