The Caucasian Shepherd Dog or Caucasian Ovcharka Dog is a fierce family protector originating in the Caucasus Mountain region, specifically Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Dagestan. They’re also known as Russian Bear Dogs, Baskhan (Karachay) Pariy, or just CO, and many variants exist. They also come in many colors, black, brown, white or any combination of these colors. This massive breed is highly territorial and won’t back down from a fight, even against bears or wolves. Caucasian Shepherd Dog temperament is intelligent, alert, protective, and calm, but their independent nature can make them difficult to train, and they are not recommended for novice owners. Their natural distrust of strangers and other animals can also lead to aggressive tendencies if an experienced trainer doesn’t keep them in check.
Though they are fairly low-energy dogs, the sheer size of Caucasian Shepherds makes them poorly suited for apartment living. You may want to keep this in mind if you’re a first-time pet parent searching for a companion. While Caucasian Shepherd puppies may be fluffy and adorable, they take a strong hand and a lot of work. Still, with proper training and socialization, well-trained Caucasian Shepherd Dogs can make strong watchdogs, family companions, and even therapy dogs.

The Finnish film “Stormheart” tells the story of the friendship between a mysterious dog and a little girl named Pearl. The film strongly features a Caucasian Shepherd in the movie’s titular role.
