How much forced exercise (on a leash) is recommended for a Great Dane puppy? On the side of caution, 5 minutes per month of age, and no more than 2 times a day. So your 8 week old puppy/2 month old puppy can have 10 minutes, twice a day. Should never be heavy exercise, due to their growing joints and growth plates, so please noooo jogging until a year old and work up their endurance slowly.
Free self regulated exercise is when they're loose in a safe area, preferably fenced, and there are no limitations, as they can stop and rest when they want.
Socializing is incredibly important, but of course you don't want to expose your not yet fully vaccinated puppy to viruses. Please don't consider your pup fully vaccinated until 2 weeks after their last shots. Please space their shots as much as possible. Never allow a sick puppy to be vaccinated.
Back to topic - I have used my dog carriage the most. Bringing my puppies to dog friendly restaurants, and for walks. I had a special dog basket for my bicycle, that Liberty outgrew quickly, breaking it with her weight, but it sure was a blast while she fit. I have brought my puppies to dog friendly stores, such as Marshalls , TJ Maxx, Macy's, Tractor Supply (but are more and more popular for bringing dogs, so be extra cautious) putting a blanket down in the baby seat, tethering puppy, and keeping a leash on too. Avoid pet stores, don't let your puppy on the floor at your veterinarian office. Only time I use a harness is for tethering, as they're useless for walking/training, harnesses encourage pulling (think sled dog). I've also brought my puppies kayaking and boating and they've done amazing.
Always bring lots of treats for strangers to give your puppy and have fun! 🐾❤️🐾

It is our collective experience and our opinion, that the majority of growth problems, poor conformation, lack of soundness and bad movement are normally due to a lack of free exercise in the early stages of development - under 8 months.

Yes, proper exercise at the right stage of development, can effect the overall condition and structure (conformation) of an animal, just like diet can alter the structure of an animal. (See Growth Problems In Puppies Part 1-3 ).Fast development in bone structure without the muscle development at the same time,makes for straight angles and racy looking dogs.

Crates are an important part of the care and training of a dog, but without ample "free" exercise throughout the course of a day, the muscle development that is necessary for good movement/soundness, will never be there if the foundation is not laid in the first 8 months. As a dog matures, he may get a layer of fat, but that is not muscle mass and it does not perform the same in the ring when you dog is exhibiting movement.

The same is true for keeping dogs in kennel pens, even in large kennel pens, if the dog can't stretch out and run at full speed at least daily, the animals movement, soundness and form of the animal can be greatly compromised. Many poor croups are do to the animal spending more time with his rear tucked under him in a small space than one that can step back and stretch out to move. We often remark about animals we see ringside, that structurally they look as if they should move well, but don't, because these animals live in a crate or a kennel pen.

Most breeders are afraid to their dogs exercise for fear of injury, but most injuries are due to the fact that there is no strength of muscle to support the large bone and fast development on a growing dog. It is important to let appropriate size/age dogs exercise together to help prevent seriously pulled muscles, cartilage or disc damage. Littermates are ideal, if you are a breeder. The best combination is two puppies to a space where they can have free exercise in a fenced area. In younger puppies, several in a litter are fine to play together, but in older puppies, two is best, and three can cause problems, leaving one being picked on all the time and more apt to be injured.

Free Exercise, does not mean jogging and it does not mean forced road work.

Free Exercise "MEANS" your dog has plenty of fenced yard to play in and act like a dog. We crate our puppies at night, and even at times during the day when we have to be gone from the home, but the rest of the time they have the option of running and playing outside in a large space where they can stretch out and run which builds proper bone and muscle mass.

Puppies enjoyed several hours outside this afternoon. They played in their enrichment filled outdoor pen while I cleaned their indoor pen. Then they had a blast practicing going up and down the stairs and ramp, repeatedly. Some have mastered them and some are very cautious, but they'll get there! They even had a nap on the deck before returning to their nice clean indoor enrichment filled pen 🐾❤️🐾

Today they were not outside long, we kept them up on the deck while I cleaned their indoor pen in record time, in between it raining.

What a gorgeous day, hope you all got to enjoy it! Puppies had so much fun outside this afternoon! I keep them in the safety of their outdoor pen while I clean their indoor pen. I stopped cleaning their indoor pen toys to film them. 🐾❤️🐾

Puppies are had a blast playing with their new enrichment saucer and learning the stairs/ramp with the encouragement of their Dam and Grandam! 🐾❤️🐾

Puppies got fed, weighed, wormed, then out to play with the big dogs! Grandma Violet dug a hole as I didn't open the gate fast enough! 😂 Pups families please text me to set up visits for this Friday and Saturday 11am-1pm. I'd aim for earlier as the weather might turn to rain in the afternoon. 🐾❤️🐾

I absolutely had to clean the puppies indoor pen so I decided to do an experiment. I took a Chewy box and put their giant water/chew proof heating pad in it with 2 holes. Hopeful they'd love it. My husband did this quick video when we 1st put them in there, as I ran in, and cleaned their pen as fast as I could. My husband was watching them and had to put all but Quinn into the heated box himself, once they got tired from playing. They weren't out long at all, never shivered as Jon put them in the heated box, but sadly my experiment was a bit of a failure. Hopefully it'll be nicer next weekend, regardless, I'll put them out every day after work, for 10-15 minutes, while I clean their indoor pen to acclimate them to the coldest Spring that I can recall. In other news, today was their 1st meal that wasn't gruel and they did amazing! I just soaked their mixed kibble for 1/2 an hour, sprinkled a little goats milk powder in, as we've been slowly weaning them off of the fresh goats milk the last week. They are now eating 4 meals a day instead of 5. They will be down to 3 meals a day when they go to their amazing new homes starting 6/1/24. I now have 2 water dishes in their indoor pen as they're all drinking water beautifully and don't want them to ever run out. I set up our old ramp on the back deck stairs and am hopeful to let them start using it over the next week. A couple have gone down the deck stairs already. 🐾💗🐾

Was too cold out yesterday, but the pups still had themselves a real good time! They are eating great! I'll be posting all sorts of recommendations regarding food, toys, training etc. 🐾❤️🐾

1st time outside and they're doing great! 🐾❤️🐾

Puppies got weighed and then wormed last night. They're all well over 5 lbs now. Quinn, the Black female (lime collar), and the Blue Harlequin Female, are all well over 6 lbs. Unfortunately this weekends weather is not looking very warm. I am planning to let them out in their play area on Friday to see how they do, weather permitting. Their families that want to come this Friday or Saturday, I'm sorry, but it'll be a short visit, as I don't want to chill them. Please send a me a message tomorrow. Sorry, I'm not allowing any other visitors. That said, if you're one of the good folks I have cared for that I've promised you that you can visit the puppies, my word is true, but not until they're a bit older, about 6/7 weeks old. With each passing week it'll start to get warmer, so that I can confidently let these precious puppies enjoy themselves outside in their enrichment filled play area. 🐾❤️🐾

Enrichment after lunch! Hung some toys to the sides of the pen. I hang the toys 🧸 and water bowl so that they don't get 💩 in/on them as easily as they would if on the ground. Most of the puppies are doing excellent with litter training. Some just don't seem to make it there in time so I've added a 2nd box that will be removed in time. Sterilizing their water bowl during this video. They're all drinking from it very well. I'll put in their bigger bowl probably next week when I'll likely be expanding their pen. Too much room and they wouldn't be using the litter box. I use the Misty method which is taking advantage of their natural instincts to not relieve themselves where they eat and sleep. I use Alfalfa/Timothy pellets as it's grass, helping housebreak and safe if a puppy decides to eat it, which I have not seen any interest in doing that. I highly recommend making a similar set-up for your puppies, especially if you work. Liberty was the easiest dog to housebreak ever. I used her pen for as long as I could. She's a very clean dog, never has accidents. 🐾❤️🐾

Whenever they wake up, I try to put them in their potty area right away. Then I put in some enrichment toys. Once they fall asleep I'll remove the jungle Gym and slide 🐾❤️🐾
