This is a very nice basic tutorial of how to brush a double coated breed. Although the canine model used in the video was a Shetland Sheepdog, the same technique can be applied to the OES as well. Hope it helps.

I have been talking about Frank that I forgot to mention my sweet Flora AKA Prata’s Fly Me as A Queen. Flora is Frank’s littermate and she is also showing in Springfield MO. She got 1st place in her class, Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex the past two days for a 3-point major (each day). Now, we have a little break to work on a few things before the next AKC show this coming weekend. Congratulations, Flora! I am so proud of you my sweet girl.

Hello!

*Simple educational post here*

1- It is important for our families who got one of our puppies to keep feeding their dogs high quality dog food. We feed and recommend Nutrisource Large breed (age appropriated) as our dog food. Supplements are also recommended for lifetime to provide the dogs the extra vitamins they need daily (especially in those early stage of their lives being crucial for that). Altering our food recommendation can cause irreversible changes to a dog’s life. So please avoid doing that if you are not sure about what you are doing. If switching dog food brand, an equal or better quality dog food should be fed to the dog. Please NEVER feed your dog grain free dog food since they are associated with HEART DISEASES. We also recommend NuVet vitamins as you know. Someone can say why supplement a dog if you already feed high quality dog food? The reason behind it is even the best dog food will lose some of its vitamins from the cooking process’s high heat. Therefore, supplements are recommended to guarantee the dog is getting the daily vitamins they urge to obtain the life quality they need.

2- At this point, you probably know your dog is not a real life giant teddy bear 😂 they may look like it. But they are real dog with different level of energy and different daily needs. Therefore, they need daily exercises for their overall structure to develop properly. The correct amount of exercise will vary from dog to dog and rely more upon the amount of energy your dog has since some of them may require only a few minutes of exercising a day while others will need a few hours. Proper exercising will keep your dog’s hormonally balanced and avoid lots of behavioral issues such as anxiety, boredom, etc. Keep in mind that a tired puppy is also a good one. Please avoid high jumps and high impact exercises which can lead to joint problems. Besides exercising, mental stimulation is also recommended. Mental stimulation here can be read as challenging your dog to think of cause and consequences (not just do their dog things on their own which is also a great thing and essential for them to develop their survival skills). What we mean here is to teach them a new simple trick or refresh the ones they already know such as “sit”, “stay” or “wait until I release you”. Doing these simple things will give them that type of challenge they are looking for and the sense they are doing a “job” with you. Please, keep in mind you have a herding dog. A breed that was originally created to be a worker (a drover’s dog) and work close to human. Public socialization is also another good way to mental stimulating your dog. You can take your dog to public stores such as Lowe’s, Home Depot, Pet Smart, PetCo etc. It will take your dog out of their own routines and make them normalize other human things around them (not just their homes).

3- Keeping proper weight is crucial as well. Your dog should not he overweight neither underweight since those two things can bring health issues to your dog. An overweighted dog can put constantly pressure on their hips, elbows and other joints which can bring dysplasia and joint pain, among many other issues. While an underweighted dog tells us the dog is not getting enough nutrition daily. Therefore, the dog can’t develop properly and it can cause many internal and external issues (including visible ones). An easy way to determine if your dog is in a health weight is touching and checking their hips. If you can feel the hips too easy, the dog is underweight. If you can’t feel it at all, then the dog is underweight. I’ll place a picture as a guideline down in the comment section.

Those are very simple things to be done and If you decide to follow the recommendations given here, you will improve the overall life quality of your dog. We do what we just recommended here and we have great and healthy dogs we are pleased with. Therefore, do the best for your dog. May God bless you all, folks. 🥰
