Neroโs Law has passed! Very proud to share the great news that today the Massachusetts State Senate has voted unanimously to pass Neroโs Law. The legislation has been years in the making and will allow emergency medical personnel to treat and transport working animals when injured in the line of duty.
The legislation was originally filed after Sgt. Sean Gannon was murdered and his K9 Nero was shot and injured. Though several ambulances and various rescue personnel were on scene, officers couldnโt assist Nero for nearly four hours because state law prohibited these licensed medical professionals from treating or transporting police K9s. Although Nero survived, there have been other instances in which Police K9s havenโt been as lucky.
Iโm proud to be a cosponsor of this bill and look forward to the day this is formally the law of the Commonwealth. Our K9's serving in local police departments deserve the opportunity to get life-saving treatment regardless of the situation.
