It was an exciting day today!

This sweet momma was pulled from a NJ shelter on Sunday by our friends at NJSH Pet Rescue and today we helped her welcome her babies to the world.

They will be spending the next 8 to 10 weeks with Dr. Freeman and our staff at KIND, so make sure to follow their journey with us.

Today, Nala had her annual Leptospirosis vaccine 💉

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted through the urine of infected animals, including rodents, wildlife and even farm animals.

Yesterday, Birdie (recently adopted from the south) completed treatment with us for heartworm.

She will be on strict exercise restriction for the next 2 months and her family have come up with the perfect solution. 🤣

As a reminder, heartworm preventative should be given to your pets every month, all year.

Over the last several weeks we have received many questions and concerns from owners regarding the “mystery” respiratory illness thats being shared by the media and online.

Dr. Freeman has remained vigilant and will continue. In an effort to make sure the right message is getting shared, we are attaching a great article.

A veterinarian says a potentially fatal respiratory ailment that is starting to show up in Philly-area dogs may not be as much of a mystery as once thought.

Meet Mila Jane, a 15 year old Jack Russell terrier who has been Dr. Freeman's patient for more than half of her life.

Six years ago she was diagnosed with erosive immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA), a condition that causes her immune system to erode at, and destroy, the bones in multiple toes of all four of her feet. Since then, she has been treated with multiple aggressive immunosuppressant drugs and pain medications to help stop this disease, which causes her to have severe foot pain, especially when standing and walking.

Even so, over the years, in an effort to manage her pain, she has required amputation of 8.5 toes due to their destruction by her own body.

Because she still retains the spirit of a terrier, Mila Jane would still occasionally muster up the energy to chase after a squirrel in her yard, but would fall after running just a few steps. Most of the time she hobbled around uncomfortably. Because of this, her family has had multiple recent serious discussions with Dr. Freeman about her quality of life. At 15 years old, although she stands on half as many toes as a normal dog and has gotten many more years than most dogs with erosive IMPA, her comfort was becoming increasingly difficult to control. In addition, her dental disease had also progressed to the point of causing her oral pain and her family was ever-cognizant of not wanting her to suffer.

But after a recent discussion with Dr. Freeman, and because of the recent availability of a brand new drug called Librela, her family decided to have Dr. Freeman perform a dental and to start Librela.

Mila Jane was placed under anesthesia, her teeth were scaled, polished and evaluated with dental x-ray. Several diseased teeth that were infected and a source of pain were extracted. She recovered well from anesthesia and started Librela the same day.

Librela is the FIRST and ONLY anti-nerve growth factor monoclonal antibody injection available for dogs. It is safe and effective at controlling pain associated with osteoarthritis and is given once a month.

And just a couple weeks later, Mila Jane is a new dog! She is now running and jumping and most recently relentlessly cornered a groundhog under her family's shed.

Her owner wrote to us, "Over the last six months we have been having discussions about Mila Jane's quality of life and were recently considering euthanasia. She could hardly stand, and definitely couldn't run or jump. However since her dental procedure and starting the Librela she is now living her best life with IMPA. We haven't seen this side of her in years. We are in tears of joy seeing her so comfortable. There are no words as to how much seeing her like this means to us. Thank you Dr. Freeman!"

Mila Jane will continue to receive Librela monthly and we hope it provides her with a lot more time living her best life!!
