Are my mini mealworms too big? A common question that I get asked often enough to share this.
I’m using a fresh molt to instar 6 2nd clutch mama B, holdback instar 7 from mama D and instar 8 holdback from mama B as examples.

Please kindly note, there can be some debate on this subject ‼️
I am not posting this to debate. Please & thank you if you don’t agree, just keep it moving 🙏 I’m only sharing what I do and what I feel is safe. I air on the side of caution ⚠️
Mealworms can do some damage to your jumper if the worm overpowers by mealies size & strength compared to jumpers size & strength.

The correct sized mini mealworm should be up to 1/4 inch long and skinny. No larger than up to 1/2 inch for a instar 7 and still on the skinny side.
What I was taught by mealworm breeders and in the community when i became a spood parent over 2 years ago is a mealworm should not be longer than jumper at i6 and i7. Up to one and a half times jumpers length at i8 through maturity. 🚫 2 times their length ❌
It’s when you feed mealworms that are too large and thick per stage of life that feeding mealworms in general can be dangerous.
Right out of a jumpers molt, I really air on the side of caution in mealies overall size.

Yes it is difficult to find the correct sized mealworms. I completely agree with you on this subject. Mealworms like jumpers molt to grow and mealies molt fast!! Be sure to get new containers of mealies every 4-5 weeks max and ask where you get how old and or how long have they had their mealworms before Sh1pping out. That last part is key. Keep your mealworms in the fridge between feedings to help slow down molting.
Hope this helps! Added caption to each in stage of life.

Hi, with high interest in our Spoods which I am eternally humbled and grateful for, I wanted to give you a idea what states in comparison to me, are fairly reasonable, ok and high with Fed Ex shipping.
Fed Ex sets the fees from my zip code to yours. I wish I had any control over it but I do not.
Little black house is my state and black area circled around are what states I have found it to be the lowest in fees to ship for me.
States circled in red on the higher end. Seems it’s high for most no matter what state you are in to ship over to Texas. The further you are from a breeders zip code, the higher in shipping unfortunately 😭
States not circled it can be not too bad. NY not bad but was hard to get around circling.
Please keep in mind by using Fed Ex, I’m shipping live animals legally throughout the states. Their team trained to handle the transit of live animals.
I hope this helps.

We are opening our first weekly spood availability the week of the 11th once wrapped up with shipping out our 2 previous lists for mama B (Blythe) and mama D (Diamond).
Our weekly availability takes place over in our group not here on page. I get to know my customers then and where my babies are going to. It’s important to me to know this.
Often times over series of adoptions able to now call these customers friends.
We Spood Oddities love ya no matter if you follow us just to learn about jumping spiders, help overcome arachnophobia by desensitization one reel at a time or here to adopt from us. You all mean something to me 🫶

Edit:
3 ways to do in comments as 3 different comments.

The change in seasons is amongst many of us, myself included. What does this all mean in relation to captive bred jumping spiders???

Going into my third fall as a captive bred jumping spider parent and second as a captive bred breeder, I want to share what I have experienced.
Molting can slow down and growth of clutches slow down a bit as well in captivity.
The jumpers themselves still sense the change in our homes.
Again this is what I’ve experienced and those I’ve helped in a similar manner.

You may notice premolt is a little longer than normal until the spood also adjusts to new temps in your home.
I live in a state that gets 🥶 and cold fast!
We actually go on winter break Spood Oddities from about mid January through February as overnight shipping isn’t safe to most customers. A case by case scenario.

I use reptile heat pads that have a thermostat attached to monitor temps behind my shelving units.
See comments for the reptile heat pads I use.
The reptile heat pad from a reputable company and pad sits behind enclosures and deli cups with a safe distance from. Never under and never on for jumpers. This is critical to remember.
The pads get warm not hot and you will find your spood pressed against the back of their enclosures and cups.
I provide daily play time holding the jumpers in my hand as they love our body heat. Snug as a bug in a rug on us 🖤
If you need any recommendations on what reptile heat pad to use and or an example of my set up with pads, please let me know.

This is information to keep in mind especially to new jumper parents and or those that have not gone through fall into winter yet.
I have found that in combination with LED lights and reptile heat pads, your jumper will adjust to the changes in seasons. I also use a humidifier in my loft year round but especially cooler months using heat pads. Draws a bit of moisture out of our air in home.
Your hygrometer a year round tool of necessity. Place hygrometer near enclosures. Hygrometers read both humidity percentages and temps in area.
I hope this helps

As breeders, we are often very caring people.
The kind that wear our hearts on our sleeve and would give our last penny to help another.
There comes a point though where we so called break.

Please be kind to breeders even if you don’t agree with them. We all do things for a reason based off past experience in our business. Please don’t question why we do the things we do.
Most of us, well I can say this for myself explain changes and why we are making them.
Give them a break.
This is a hard job, a 365 24/7 job. We don’t get a day off, we can’t travel and when we are sick it’s too bad so sad.
The babies and kids still need to eat.
A job not built for everyone. A 6-8 hr a day job if you do this by yourself as I do.

We all burn out and need to reenergize. If we don’t get to your message that second, give a couple hours grace. A lot of us are moms or dads and have a family to tend to also.
A lot of us struggle with some mental health issues and find peace being with our spiders. A therapy so to speak.
We come up with our fees based off feeders up to date on adoptions and supplies needed per each. This is costly especially with inflation and shipping on feeders to us.

The point is, give us grace, patience and a bit of understanding. Promise we don’t make much doing this. Pennies on the dollar.
Show us how you would wish to be treated yourself. We do reserve the right to refuse and cancel adoptions. Kindness goes a long way.
Most do it for the love of these beautiful tiny creatures. Hoping to breed and share with you!
I hope you have a great weekend 🫶

Hi!
Raffle is going strong. Thanks for supporting our collaboration 🫶
Friendly reminder as I’ve had quite a few messages about, the i7 in image is an example of a i7 from mama Blythe, not the actual spider in raffle. That spider is now a instar 8. Pic taken a couple weeks back. Mama Blythe is a first generation Banshee ghostling paired with Draven. Instar 7 a second gen ghostling.

Raffle wraps up this Friday and I will be Sh1pping presumed female i7 out the 29th with our 2.9x2.9x2.9 enclosure which should be used at i7 and possibly i8. We have a i7 mama B ghostling covered for lifetime in enclosures. Many ghostlings haven’t done well over a 4x4x4 at maturity in enclosure size.
You message Spooderhood Spiders for raffle tickets. We decided to let Melissa take the wheel in collecting payments. We will be live Friday night on instagram for a live drawing.
Thanks a ton for supporting Spood Oddities 🖤
