Beautiful Robby gets a home!

Robby was adopted to a home in Chicago at Christmas but it was months in the making! His new family met him last summer and it was love at first site! Hes been fostered since Sept of 2023 by Kristin and John and adopted to her brother and his family (thank you Kristin and John)!
Robby was picked up as a stray and taken to a very high kill shelter. We pulled him hours before they killed him. We found out after xrays and exam that he had probably been hit by a car....old leg and trach injury. He was functional but just needed to be careful, such as not using a leash w collar. He thrived in foster..loved to be loved, housebroken, good w their other dogs! Robby was such a sensitive little dog..sensitive spirit. Cant imagine how he survived on the streets.

He's now living w a wonderful family including a senior dog. They get along well. The family fights over who he sleeps with! He's so loved. Car rides, long walks, lots of cuddle time. 2 teenagers that adore him. Enjoy all you have coming to you little fellow! We couldnt be happier to see the changed life for you. To see how scared you were the first day and to see you now..loved and cared for. This is what makes all the hard work of rescue worth it!

Look at what God has done for our horse friends when it comes to bitter winter! Amazing. If you have friends who own horses, please encourage lots of fresh hay right now.

As the temps start to drop again, here are some cold weather and horse facts! Horses have many adaptations that help them stay warm!

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice; good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold horses will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm. Stay tuned for future posts on blanketing.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal, and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose..

Sharing some cute pictures of Val in the snow!
Sweet sweet girl..loves to give kisses and be loved on. Loves to cuddle on the couch. Would you consider fostering this girl? Would you consider adopting her? Shes been in rescue for a year and 9 months and we really want to see her find her home. If you are between dogs and can help; if you want an only dog that will tell you daily how great you are; if you want a dog thats not high energy but still loves walks and playtime..please consider sweet Val!

Happy New Year!
We pray that 2025 will be a year of improvement! One being that we as a nation will seek to become a NO-KILL NATION!
++This means that we as people in our communities seek for solutions to hang onto our animals instead of taking the easy way out and getting rid of them; thus, shifting the problem to someone else
++It means that we as people see that our homeless pet population is all our problem and we seek to help solve it by adopting, voluteering. donating, fostering, helping as we can..That We All Do Something...
++it means that we communicate w those of authority that we want to see change..the end of killing of healthy animals and that we want to see them implement policies already developed and proven to work; to get us there (hint..the 11 point equation)

Would you commit with us this year to do One More Thing to help the most vunerable among us? Step.out of that comfortable zone or maybe cut back on that dinner one weekend?

We need fosters to help our dogs. We've needed them all year. Thank you to the few that have helped this yr (you've been a blessing).

We throw out a challenge...if you are between dogs..would you be willing to foster at this point in time to help one of these precious ones? Just foster once..you will change their life and they will change yours..

We know youve shared but please share again! Thank you!

We're hitting the end of the year and its been a hard year..Few adoptions..so hard to see them wait month after month. Everyone of the dogs in our rescue have been with us for at least 1.5 yrs..many for 2 yrs now. This is a long time in a dogs life. Its heartbreaking to see them wait.
We have more difficult to adopt dogs..we know. These deserve just as much chance as the easier ones..the little cuties and the doodles for example. Other rescues arent willing to take on these..noone will help them so they die in the shelters. We will take any type of dog..not limiting to easy or hard because they are God's creatures and each deserve a home and love. We cant do it without the community helping us find placement for them though. Please consider adopting. Please help share.
What is heartbreaking is that we cannot help others til we see more of these find homes. So adopting these help us save others too.
We are posting a few of them again in hopes for some interest. Help them have a happy new year...

Lets get Stella home or foster home by New Years!
Stella is at the Campbell county shelter. She was picked up as a stray and was malnurished at the time. Shes making great progress. Stella is about 4-5 yrs old. Shes a sweet, cuddly girl that needs someone to give her the love she was denied theough the first part of her life. Shes a petite germ shep..about 55lbs. Active and fun. She needs to probably be an only girl.doesnt seem to.likd dogs and cats. This shelter tries really hard but these dogs dont get to stay forever so time is of essence for Stella. If someone between dogs, or looking for an only dog to foster would contact us, we will pull her. Better yet, would you.adopt her? You will change the world for this one girl..She nedds a superhero!

🎄🐾It's the 12 DAYS OF SHELTER ANIMALS! 🎄🐾

"I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do!
Don't want a doll,
No donkey tinker toy,
I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy!"

NICK FURY could be just the doggo for you! This big boy asked Santa Paws for a home of his own this Christmas. He sat on his lap (okay well maybe he just sat next to him because.....hims a big boy!) and wished upon the Christmas star that he would have a family and a dog bed to call his own soon! ✨I mean look at this sweet and happy face!? How could Santa ignore this happy boy's Christmas wish!?🎅

NICK FURY is dog-, kid- and cat-approved! He is potty-trained, loves to get 'tention and pets and luvins', oh and treatos!! We really like snackos too! This guy doesn't let his medical condition or the fact that he is missing one eye deter him from living his best life and loving everyone that he meets! He is an absolute lover!!! He was the happiest and bestest boy for his Christmas photoshoot. A soft dog bed, a pretty blanket, pets and he was ready for his close-up! He would be the perfect addition to your Christmas decor- a real-life Christmas hippo 🎄

In all transparency, NICK FURY does suffer from seizures and requires daily medication. Our clinic staff is willing to work with his adopter to continue offering affordable vet care so that NICK FURY can continue to receive his daily medication. The trustees and officers at the Justice Center have been diligent and this big boy is thriving! He currently weighs 102 lbs, and is 3 years 7 months old. He has been waiting for a new home since April 2024 and has been a member of the Second Chance Program since May.

NICK FURY is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines. His adoption fee is currently waived. His adopter will also receive 1 free training session with a local trainer here in Athens. What better way to spend the holidays than with your new best furry friend!? 🎄🐾

Adoption applications can be submitted on our website, www.mrhumane.org . Once processed and approved, you will be contacted to schedule a meet and greet with NICK FURY at the Justice Center with the officers, trustees and our coordinator.
