🚫🐾The unspoken challenges in dog guardianship: Your dog’s undesirable behaviors are not out of stubbornness or an attempt to dominate you—even though I know it can sometimes feel that way. 🙃

It can be frustrating when their behavior seems unpredictable or difficult to manage. But here’s the truth—your dog isn’t trying to control you. There’s a variety of factors that can explain their daily behaviors like past learning, genetics, the current environment, or maybe they have an unmet need.

With positive reinforcement training, you can turn frustration into understanding and build a relationship based on trust and teamwork. When we meet our dog’s needs or take a moment to reflect on the “why” of a certain behavior, we often get more of the behaviors we want to see.

Ready to create a partnership where you and your dog thrive together and no longer feel in conflict?

Comment “training” to start your training journey and find a better relationship with your dog. We offer in-person training where we come to your home and virtual training. Let’s change your relationship with your dog!

🙌Congratulations to Ghost and Wyatt, our latest graduates of the Raise the Bar training program! 🎓🎉

Over the past few months, these two buddies worked on essential life skills through a customized training plan tailored to their individual needs. Their journey included reactivity training and sound desensitization, helping them build confidence, improve impulsivity, and learn how to self-regulate. Week after week, they put in the effort alongside their dedicated guardians, to become more resilient—even when faced with their triggers. I always tell my clients it’s okay to have “big feelings” both dogs and humans. My goal as your trainer is to help your dog find neutrality with their triggers!

Congrats Team Wyatt & Ghost! I look forward to seeing your continued success on your training journey. Thanks for Raising The Woof with us! 🙌

Sharing this with my dog guardians who have been feeling guilty if their dog has been stuck inside from these freezing temperatures. Hang in there and know you’re doing the best you can with your dog.

During this coldfront, Riese and I have been finding fun and mental stimulation inside. There has been A LOT of hide and seek games, restarting the Relaxation Protocol, and working on our canine freestyle dance routine. Just trying to keep up the encouragement even with this captivity. We’ll get there Michigan! 💪🙌

Sometimes being a canine care giver can cause us to be consumed by guilt. We know that’s what makes us good guardians, to care this much. But that doesn’t always help ease the stress.

So in times when it feels overwhelming, just do what you can, just keep reminding yourself how much you do. How much you care and how lucky your dog is to have you as their person.

New certification alert 🎉🎓

The priority has always been to help you and your dog authentically understand one another and not feel like you're in conflict. As part of my ongoing commitment to professional development and enhancing how I support dogs and their families, I am proud to announce that I have completed the Family Dog Mediator™ Certification and am now a Certified Family Dog Mediator (FDM).

This certification goes beyond the traditional view of dogs as just pets, offering a comprehensive understanding of the LEGS™ Framework (Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Socialization). It provides a deeper perspective on why dogs behave the way they do and focuses not on “fixing” problems or modifying behavior, but on meeting our dogs where they are at as individuals. By addressing the unique needs of both dogs and their families, this approach creates opportunities for more fulfilling lives together.

I am excited to bring this holistic perspective into my work and look forward to helping families build deeper, stronger, and more harmonious relationships with their companion animals.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with Miss Cardi over the past four weeks, helping her build confidence around her triggers as part of our Reactivity and Sound Sensitivity Program.

For our students with “big feelings,” such as excessive barking/guarding behaviors, lunging, pulling, or growling, we use game-based training techniques designed to build confidence, reduce stress, and meet our dog’s needs through mental stimulation and choice.

🎉Congrats to Cardi for finding more confidence and strengthening her ability to make calm decisions, especially when faced with triggers like people or delivery trucks passing by her front window. We’re excited to continue working with her this spring on leash reactivity to help her feel more secure on walks. Thank you for raising the woof with us! 🙌 🐾

👉 Dog Parents: We understand how frustrating or even embarrassing it can feel when your dog has an outburst. With the right support and by creating predictability, we can help you and your dog feel more confident when faced with triggers they find scary or overwhelming.

Reach out today to get started on your journey toward a calmer, more confident dog you can count on.

Thank you Karen Pryor for paving the way for positive reinforcement dog trainers and for helping everyday dog parents strengthen their connection with their companion animals. I am very honored to have trained my own dog and my clients with your science-driven and humane methods. May you rest in peace; and for those inspired by you, may they find comfort in your passing.

Today, we honor the incredible life and legacy of Karen Pryor, a pioneer who transformed the world of animal training and left an indelible mark on our industry.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Karen Pryor’s groundbreaking work paved the way for trainers like myself, and countless others, to advocate for humane, effective training methods. While the fight for positive change would still continue, her visionary efforts undoubtedly accelerated the progress, bringing us to this better place much sooner than we might have otherwise achieved.

Karen Pryor was one of the first to show the world that animals don’t need to be trained with violence or fear. Her work with marine mammals in the 1960s, grounded in science and compassion, paved the way for positive reinforcement techniques that continue to shape the industry.

She didn’t just teach us how to train better; she taught us to see animals as sentient beings, deserving of respect, patience, and understanding.

Her book Don’t Shoot the Dog! remains a cornerstone in the field of behavioral psychology and animal training, introducing the world to the principles of operant conditioning and the power of positive reinforcement. The Karen Pryor Academy, founded in 2007, has trained thousands of professionals, ensuring her legacy endures in the hands of those committed to ethical training practices.

She laid the foundation for a movement that prioritizes trust, connection, and kindness. The positive changes we see in the industry today, our collective rejection of outdated, punitive methods, are a direct result of her fearless advocacy and unwavering belief in a better way.

Her work changed our field, but more importantly, it changed the way we connect with the animals who share our lives.

Thank you, Karen, for showing us what’s possible when science and compassion come together.

Your legacy will continue to inspire us, and we’ll strive to honor your memory by carrying your vision of compassion for animals forward. Rest in peace, and thank you for everything.

Frustrated by walks filled with lunging or pulling?
🐕 💨🚶‍♂️😩

Here are some training tips you can do right now to find a walking partner you enjoy!

✨ Work in your dog’s threshold, and when we go over it, respond by creating distance

✨Use a longer lead to encourage exploration and sniffing

✨Reinforce focus when your dog voluntarily looks at you or can do so on cue

✨Reinforce neutrality and when your dog chooses to not to react to their triggers

✨Practice a focus cue in low-distracting environments before implementing with distractions or your dog’s triggers

🎄🦴Holiday Food Safety & Your Dog 🎄🦴

Tomorrow will be filled with fun and gathering! Keep these tips in mind to keep your dog safe during the festivities:

✨ Don’t give your dog cooked bones—they can splinter, cause blockages, or become choking hazards.
✨ Avoid human foods, as many contain toxic ingredients like onions, xylitol, or grapes (found in fruitcake).
✨ Remind your guests not to feed your dog, no matter how tempting it may be.

A little extra caution will go a long way in keeping your dog safe, happy, and avoiding emergency vet visits or costly bills!
