It’s pretty normal for our pets get a sudden urge to scratch, lick their paws, and even scoot around the floor on occasion (and we know that feeling too…ok, maybe not scooting on the floor). It seems like normal behavior, but sometimes it could be a sign of something deeper than an occasional itch, like an allergy or skin issue, which shouldn’t be ignored. In addition to discomfort, untreated itchiness can eventually lead to secondary bacterial or fungal skin infections which are no fun at all and can put quite a strain on the bond you have with your pet.

When is it more than a simple scratch?

Here are signs that your pet may be experiencing an allergy or skin issue:

Frequent scratching, licking, biting, or chewing
Excessive rolling, rubbing, or scooting
Recurrent ear problems
Hair loss, body odor, or skin changes
If you notice any of these signs, bring them in for a closer look to discover what might be causing the discomfort and how we help with relief.

Potential causes for itchiness could be allergies (most common reason), parasites (fleas, ticks, or mites), or skin infections. Allergies cover a wide span of triggers including pollen and plants, food, or even simple household items like shampoo or detergent.

Available treatments vary and can include:

Daily pill or long-lasting injections that treat the underlying cause and provide relief without the use of antihistamines (which rarely work) or steroids (which can produce unwanted side effects)
Topicals including ointments and creams
Parasite protection to kill existing fleas/ticks and prevent future outbreaks
Antibiotics for infections
Nutrition changes for food allergies
