A lot of trainers focus on leash skills, basic obedience, and being the āalphaā of the pack (even though most of the time they have no clue what that really means)
You as the client say:
āI struggle with my dog jumping on peopleā
āI canāt get my dogs to settle in the house and stop destroying thingsā
āMy dog counter surfs like crazyā
āMy dog will get into things it shouldnāt then run around the house with themā
Andā¦ more often than not, most trainers will say that you need to teach your dog ābasic obedienceā how to sit and go to their āplaceā. Theyāll tell you to come to group classes or that you should eat before the dog eats, and to not let them sleep in the bed with you.
Well Iām happy to announce, Thatās all bull sh*t. Pardon my language.
Yes it is important to teach your dog some basics. There is a time and a place for those commands.
However the vast majority of the time, they donāt help in the situations above.
Sure, you can make your dog sit when people come through the door. And praise them and give them treats. Keep them on a leash and stop them from jumping. But as soon as you let the dog up out of the sit, or unclip the leash and have your guests walk by, guess what the dog will doā¦.
It doesnāt take a rocket scientist to guess that the dog will jump again! The reason why? Well because you never addressed the actual problem. You did things to work around it, but at the core you did not properly communicate to your dog what you want and what is expected out of them. Instead, you worked around it and spent a lot of time and money for no results.
Instead we need to focus on properly installing communication with our dogs. In a way that we can give them feedback and consequences. Be it good and bad ones, all based on their behaviors.
We need to focus on giving the dog outlets for their primal needs. NEEDS not wants. If we can learn how to effectively and efficiently interact with our dogs in a posi

Letās talk prioritiesā¦
A good amount of dog owners that I work with come up with a lot of excuses as to why they arenāt seeing progression in their training.
They will sayā¦
āItās been a busy weekā
āI havenāt had the time to work with him/herā
āThings came up and we just havenāt found the timeā
āI got sick and had a headache all weekā
āThe kids had a bunch of events and we were busy doing things with themā
These, among many others, are excuses that people use to explain why their dog is misbehaving and why they donāt have the ātimeā to change it.
You have the timeā¦ trust me you doā¦
When I hear things like this all I hear is that your dog and its behavior is not a PRIORITY to you. Which is fine if you donāt care how your dog acts or what they do. Or maybe you have a naturally chill dog.
But for those who donāt and for those who seek out help and want to see a difference, YOU need to make that dog a priority and put in the time and effort that it takes to make these changes. No amount of professional training or board and trains will work unless you are willing to do the work during and or after.
I run my own business. I have two dogs (one being a puppy in this video) I have an eight month old son, I visit with family and host family and friend gatherings, we go out to eat and to sporting eventsā¦ I think I have a pretty busy life, yet Iām still able to raise and train great dogsā¦
Why is that?
Because I make it a priority.
In this video youāll see myself training my puppy while having my son in his bouncy seat, and my wife was leaving to go do errands. She saw this through the window and decide to film it to show her appreciation for me taking the time that it takes to both father our son and work with our dogs.
So basically, enough of the excuses people. Get out there and train your dogs!
Always practicing, always getting better! šŖšš¦·

I had the opportunity to bring hoagie and do a presentation for a class of pre-schoolers and teach them on how to be safe with and interact with dogs.
We covered some basic doās and dontās like not to wake a sleeping dog, donāt jump on our dogs, donāt yank on their ears or tails!
We also practiced how to ask permission to greet a dog in public and how to do it appropriately and safely!
Did you know that roughly 70% of dog bites in the U.S. are kids?
Letās help bring that number down by educating kids as well as their parents on how to safely be around dogs!

Here is a wonderful example and proof of my training methods and concepts.
I hate when the deer come into my yard because they poop everywhere and when I have the dogs out, theyāll try to eat the poop. So when I see them out there Iāll get Hoagie out and let him chase off the deer! š¦
In this video I give hoagie his heel command, walk up to the deer and have him sit, then his reward for doing those behaviors for me is to chase off the deer! We are able to accomplish this and allow Hoagie to do this because of how I trained him and the use of one the tools being an E-collar. I firmly believe that without the use of an e-collar in training, I would not be able to attain this amount of reliability with this type of dog that has so much prey drive.
The reason I bring this up is because tools such as the E-collar and prong collar are being banned across the world. Theyāve been banned in some countries in Europe as well as Australia. They are being banned because a certain community of people are saying that all you need to do to train dogs is have treats and cookies, and that you should never tell your dog ānoā and that there is no place for such āabusiveā tools. This community will say that an e-collar causes stress and damages your relationship with your dog.
So I wanted to share this video as proof and as education to show what the use of these tools can accomplish and that they donāt cause stress or harm but actually the opposite, they allow me, to allow my dog to have the ultimate pleasure of chasing a live animal off the property and be happy doing it. Whilst knowing when I call him that he has to come back. Watch this video and you tell me if he looks abused, beaten or stressed. Also watch till the end for a funny blooper š He was wearing the e-collar and I had the remote, but never had to use it. If he didnāt listen then I would have a way to communicate with him what I needed him to do. But I didnāt need to use it this time.

First time scenario of a home invasion with no other than PPD Hoagie! Overall super happy with his performance, especially for his first time!
Because this was his first time biting someone that came through the door, he did hesitate slightly after the command to bite was given. Almost like he was thinking āuhhh are you sure dude? Aiight, I guess weāre doing this!ā Chomp!! Iāll take slight hesitation over not biting any day. I canāt tell you guys how many times people purchase these protection dogs and they actually donāt know how to protect when needed. One thing is for sure, hoagie will have your back šŖšÆ

What do you guys think?? Should the owner have stepped in and separated them? Should the older dog have got up and walked away? Did the puppy deserve to be corrected by the older dog??
Let me you know what you think in the comments!

This is Hoagieās first completely out of context scenario based protection exercise.
We started with the decoy (bad guy) hiding at the bottom of the property behind a car so when we brought hoagie out he would not see him.
I then just played fetch with hoagie which we do everyday multiple times a day. So to him, this was just another day of play!
I give the decoy the signal to then start approaching slowly and suspiciously towards us as if heās invading the property.
As the decoy gets closer, I call him out, and start a dialogue as if I didnāt know him and he was trespassing on my property.
After no answer and the threat persisting I tell Hoagie to āguardā which is his cue to bark at the target. The man kept coming closer so I sent hoagie to bite him!
For this being the very first time, Iām super happy with how hoagie responded, especially just being a little over a year old. Some of his obedience commands werenāt perfect and weāll sharpen that up, but overall he did exactly what was need which was identify the threat, deter, then execute. He released his bite perfectly on command and came back to me which Iād say 80% of the training community canāt do or struggle to do with their dogs.
The decoy was also wearing baggy clothes over the bite suit so hoagie would not be equipment wise and see the suit and think āoh this is just another training exerciseā.

This is the video of clover in reference to my post before this one.
Protection dog training. Getting some reps in with Hoagie.
First time doing a full scenario based training session where we put all the pieces together into one big exercise. Hoagie makes a few errors, but no big deal! Heās 11 months and this was the first time in this context that we asked him to do these behaviors. As we practice more, heāll catch on!

Got a message from a client this morning showing off their training theyāve been doing!
This is Duke, a black lab. He used to struggle walking on leash and would react towards other dogs.
After going through my reactive dog leash walking program this is them now. Theyāre able to enjoy a much happier life together!
Keep up the great work guys!!!
Love doing detection work with this guy! Watch Hoagie stick with it and struggle through this tough search, all to find it at the end and get his reward! šÆšÆ
