Routine bloodwork for your pet can give us insight on their kidney values as the years go by. Sometimes life gets in the way, and it is assumed that bloodwork is only needed for pets once they get sick. This is far from the truth. Getting your pet annual bloodwork, especially when they are healthy, allows for a better diagnosis. It allows us to compare the bloodwork from a healthy visit to the bloodwork completed at a sick visit!

Don’t let your pet’s Halloween go from spooky to downright deadly! Keep your pet safe with these five tips:

- Keep all candies, especially chocolates and anything containing xylitol (recently being hidden in ingredients by being called wood sugar, birch sugar, and birch bark extract), out of your pet’s reach, as they are extremely poisonous to cats and dogs.

- Keep black cats inside for a few days around Halloween. They are more likely to be pestered this time of year.

- Make sure pet costumes don’t have small pieces your pet could swallow.

- Keep pets away from pumpkins. Though they aren’t poisonous to cats or dogs, they can cause blockages if your pet swallows big chunks.

- Keep your pet away from the door so she doesn’t try to escape when you’re giving candy to trick-or-treaters.

A number of our clients have reported sightings of coyotes near their homes here in McDonough. Here are a few tips if you encounter one.

It is important to remember that coyotes are a natural part of our environment and serve a very useful purpose, controlling the population of small animals and maintaining a balance in their habitat. The best thing that we can do as residents is learn to safely coexist. Visit this link for more information on coyotes in Georgia:

This week we celebrate all of the veterinary technicians across the world.

Veterinary Technicians are integral players on the veterinary healthcare team. They are on the front lines, compassionately working with clients whose beloved animals need care. They work tirelessly in exam rooms, labs, and operating rooms, using their vast technical and scientific knowledge to treat and care for every animal species. Their broad professional and personal skills allow veterinarians to work more efficiently and effectively. And they do it all with love and a smile daily.

Thank you for everything that all of you do!

October is (Pet) Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Too!
Did you know that breast cancer is a serious issue for female cats and dogs as well? The statistics are alarming: breast cancer—also known as mammary cancer—is the most common malignant cancer in dogs and the third most common in cats. While felines develop this type of cancer about half as often as dogs, it is much more likely to be fatal when they do.

The good news is that for pets, breast cancer is one of the easiest to prevent. Spaying your female dog or cat before the age of six months can reduce the risk of malignant tumors significantly. The risk of breast cancer goes down 90% if a cat is spayed before her first heat cycle, and for female dogs, the risk goes down to less than 1%.

If you have an unaltered female dog or cat, it’s important to do regular mammary exams. You can start with a tummy rub to relax your pet, but should you feel any unusual lumps or bumps, it’s a good idea to get your pet in for an exam as soon as possible.

For more information on pet breast cancer prevention or about having your pet spayed, give us a call at 770-954-1414.

October is American Humane’s annual Adopt-A-Dog Month, celebrating shelter pups and the joy they bring to our lives. It also encourages those looking for new pets to seriously consider adopting dogs from shelters. Every year, roughly 3.5 million dogs wind up in shelters, and many never find forever homes. Many animals in shelters end up being euthanized because of shelter overcrowding, so adopting dogs from shelters or rescues actually saves two lives: the one you take home, and the one you make space for.
