Today’s spotlight resident is Ham the Asian Painted Bullfrog, also known as the Malaysian bullfrog, banded frog, digging frog, Kaloula frog, common Asian frog, and painted ballon frog, but most people just called them “chubby frogs”. In the wild, this family of narrow-mouthed frogs eat primarily termites and ants. Termites are hard to offer in captivity so Ham gets a staple of small dubia roaches. When startled or threatened, chubby frogs can secrete a poisonous sticky white substance, though it is not much threat to humans. They are a terrestrial species, preferring to make their homes on the ground among leaf litter or shallow pools, but are surprisingly capable climbers. The males make a loud call during mating season that some compare to cattle noises. Ham has yet to sing the song of his people for me but I am definitely looking forward to hearing it in the future!
