Blind Dog Day recognizes the courage, adaptability, and resilience of blind dogs, and the special bond they share with their owners.

Blind animals can be trained to localize and follow sounds such as clicks and whistles. In a household with more than one pet, a blind pet will often rely on another animal in the household to lead the way.

Do you have a blind dog? What helpful training tips can you share?

Today is National Honey Bee Day!

Bees are part of the biodiversity on which we all depend for our survival. They pollinate about 80% of flowering plants, including over 130 types of fruits, nuts, and vegetables. They also produce honey, royal jelly, pollen, beeswax, propolis, and honey bee venom, which are all high-quality foods. Honey has medicinal properties that are used in apitherapy to treat human ailments.

As development increases, bee habitat decreases, with woods, trees, grassland and even gardens being destroyed or paved over. The rise in intensive farming methods has also left bees struggling. A staggering 97% of wildflower meadows have been lost since the 1930s, reducing an important food resource for bees. With pesticides and herbicides sprayed across many of the remaining plants, bees are losing more food or face poisoning themselves by feeding on what's left.

So how can you help??

🐝Plant pollinator-friendly plants: Plant a garden with flowers that bloom in different seasons to provide a food source for bees and increase the amount of flower-rich habitat in your area. You can also plant flowering trees, cover crops, or bee-friendly plants rich in pollen and nectar.

🐝Reduce pesticide use: Avoid using pesticides and herbicides, which can harm bees.

🐝Protect habitats: Protect important habitats for bees, such as ground nesting bees. You can also provide homes for bees to nest, such as bee hotels for solitary bees.

🐝Create a bee bath: Set up a bee bath filled with fresh water for bees to use.

🐝Advocate for legislation: Support legislation that's friendly to pollinators.

BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ, 💗, the bees

World Elephant Day aims to bring more public awareness to the plight of both Asian and African elephants!

Did you know............

🐘Elephants live in close family groups
Elephants form strong bonds with their groups. They’re strongly social animals and will rest for longer if another elephant is also resting nearby.

🐘Elephants are individuals
Each elephant has their own personality. Their personality traits influence their social role within the herd and even how they try to solve problems.

🐘Elephants are playful
Elephants love to play, and not just as youngsters. Fully-grown elephants throw water into the air, roll on the ground, and even chase other animals simply for fun.

🐘Elephants are often exploited for tourism and entertainment industries. Well-meaning tourists are encouraged to take part in various activities with the elephants, such as rides, washing, bathing, and feeding. Although these seem harmless, being ridden is not natural elephant behavior. These tourist attractions often inflict significant suffering on the elephants involved.

🐘Elephants are hunted for ivory
Despite growing awareness of the true cost of ivory, it’s estimated that poachers still kill approximately 20,000 elephants every year for their tusks.
This level of killing may even be changing elephant genetics. Elephants in the wild are increasingly born with smaller tusks, or even tuskless. This is at least partly because individuals with larger tusks are removed from the gene pool by poachers.

Woke up this morning feline fine, it's International Cat Day! Me-ow!😻

These independent creatures offer offer companionship, unconditional love, entertainment, affection, lots of purring, comfortable silences and they're trainable!

They may knock things off of tables and prefer boxes to expensive cat trees, but that's just one of the many reasons we love them! They don't need to be walked, they don't howl, and they are great lap warmers!

Is your dog is obsessively scratching, biting, or licking itself?

Cytopoint and Apoquel are two potential solutions to manage itching in dogs, but many pet owners struggle to determine which is better. So what is the difference??

The main difference between Cytopoint and Apoquel is the method of administration and effective period. Cytopoint is an injection that needs to be given every four weeks. Apoquel comes in the form of a pill and requires daily oral dosing.

Cytopoint and Apoquel both target itching associated with atopic allergies – which are hypersensitive reactions to typically harmless substances in the environment. They can also be used to treat itch caused by food allergies and other skin allergies.

Cytopoint is an antibody that binds to a single specific itch-producing protein in a dog's bloodstream. Cytopoint prevents these proteins (cytokines) from binding to the skin's nerve receptors, reducing the transmission of the itch response.

Apoquel targets inflammation at its root. It acts against specific proteins that trigger a dog's immune signalling response, blocking the production of the itch-producing cytokines in the first place. Cytopoint and Apoquel both help to reduce the circulating concentration of the itch-producing cytokine called Interleukin-31. Cytopoint binds to the circulating chemical, knocking it out whilst Apoquel works to reduce its production.

Apoquel is usually preferred during flare-ups of allergies. It's administered orally, via a once or twice-daily dosing. This is helpful for owners who have dogs that are difficult to bring to vets or uncomfortable with injections. As Apoquel has a short period of efficacy, it's passed out of your pet's body very rapidly. This way, owners can quickly determine if the treatment is helpful and stop it easily if needed. On the other hand, Cytopoint is injected into the skin and lasts longer on average for four weeks.

Cytopoint is ideal for dogs who are younger than one year old, have difficulty swallowing pills, or are too small for owners to accurately dose with Apoquel at home.

It's possible to use Apoquel and Cytopoint concurrently if a dog has a flare-up event and requires additional anti-itch relief.

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
