The crevice tortoise (Malacochersus tornieri), also known as the pancake tortoise, is highly specialized, with a noticeably flat shape to its surprisingly flexible shell. Tortoise shells are normally comprised of a significant amount of bone, but these tortoises have much less rigid bone in the overall structure of their shells.

Pancake tortoises are small, with adults growing to a carapace length of up to 7 inches. However, despite their size, they are quite active. Pancake tortoises are known to flee and hide when startled, rather than to retract into their shells. Their unique flexible shell allows them to move more quickly than any other tortoise.

In the wild, these tortoises are found in fragmented populations in limited areas of savanna and semi-desert with rocky outcrops in some parts of Kenya and Tanzania. Crepuscular in habit (active around sunrise and sunset), pancake tortoises rely on their speed and flexible shell to evade predators. Specially adapted to make use of narrow rock crevices as protective shelter, these tortoises are quick and adept climbers, enabling them to utilize their habitat in ways that no other tortoise could.

Assessed by the IUCN as critically endangered, this species is the focus of significant international conservation efforts, including captive breeding projects in zoos to support the wild population. Unfortunately, the remaining wild population faces severe threats from human activity, habitat destruction, and poaching.

The species has been bred and reared under human care for several decades. If you are interested in keeping a pancake tortoise as a pet, it is vitally important to ensure that you support responsible reptile keeping by seeking out captive bred animals.

Why attend our local show?
Why dont you change the name?
Why cant I get a table
Why do I have to pay admission?
And more

Facebook does not allow name changes - period . So we kept the eventhough -we moved to Medina after covid to this 21,000 sq foot building . We started in Cleveland and will Remain the Cleveland Reptile Show

Your support for local reptile
Insects feeder breeders is critically important - animals feeders insects & supplies from mom & pop companies not big box stores gets you quality animals
Locally produced & keeps money in the local economy- many vendors try to offer a variety of items as no animal sales should be an impulse buy and should to be preceded by thoughtful preparation-
At our show you have so many advantages-the option to chose the exact animal your buying , not buying sight unseen, no overnight shipping cost ,worry about temperature or rough handling injuring the animal. Meeting the breeder face to face and having that connection for any follow up advice is key. Getting the exact cage ,food items ,bulbs ,supplement ,or bedding needed that day in hand no shipping or driving around to try to find it . Meeting other reptile enthusiasts- getting out and seeing what things are being bred is astounding . Close up and personal .These are just a of the highlights of attending our local show.
So you will see live reptiles amphibians insects plants decor and other things too like the 3d printed things . Many are actually hides ,water dishes and caves & decor- Some are toys for kids . I see reptile
Related hats stickers , books , and I For example I have 2 tables of unusual colubrids Zerkle Reptile Co and 4 feet of crystals which i bring in various amounts depending on how animals I have to display -it allows me to keep my table full -also because Many folks enjoy decorating cages with them in addition to collecting them & i like shiny things 🙂 ymmv
Some folk are frustrated by quantity of ball pythons at all shows At this time 99% of breeders are breeding bp because thats whats selling. I know we have many vendors with cbb animals that are not bp at very show so look closely- other neat things are there at every show!! .
Lots of folks that want to vend - many have ball pythons ,crested gecko & bearded dragons sadly thats whats flooding the market & we have those vendors in abundance so trying to balance and find variety is a sticky wicket. So we try to have as much variety as possible at every event. People looking to vend We offer our current vendors the first option to renew their table so one opens if and when a vendor choses not to renew. This shows our commitment to vendors that supported us over the past 18 years. Your spending drives the market as long as people are only buying bp -thats whats selling & will be produced.
So i have 2 more things to add sorry for the long post- all vendors have business cards if you buy a live anything get their card- i get pms all the time i need to contact that guy in middle of the room with brown hair where i got my snake……lizard….turtle i forgot the type bedding, vitamin ,bulb etc identifying that person can be difficult- please get a card
Second sadly we have to charge admission -to everyone (even of your buying …. whatever item)…. We literally pay thousands of dollars to rent the building and pay insurance every single month period. Admission covers that cost- otherwise we would not be able to host the show. So please don’t harass my grandkids at admission that your not paying because your just getting rodents/crickets etc -you could ship them and i know it costs alot more than the $7 admission .
Thanks for reading this far Im almost done !
We started this show in 2006 and have tried to offer it to showcase as many local breeders as possible -I want to personally thank my 22,000 followers for your support . I handle the fb pages and answered these questions daily. If you have suggestion comments or complaints I am always happy to address them.
Hope See you guys Nov 17 at the next show:)

October 21st is Reptile Awareness Day, a day to promote conservation and appreciation of the phenomenal world of reptiles. Through educational outreach efforts, truth and understanding of these fascinating animals can be spread. In the name of education, we will use this day to encourage more appreciation for these wonderful animals.

As a group, reptiles are poorly understood by much of the public. Myths and urban legends often ascribe aggressive, malicious, and even supernatural abilities to these animals, reinforcing them as sources of revulsion and fear. Those familiar with reptiles know well that such negative associations are as false as they are unjustified. Nonetheless, it can be difficult to convince people that these animals are both in need of and worth conserving.

Modern zoos do invaluable work in this direction, but often, the interactive educational programs offered to schools, libraries, and other informative outreach events by private animal keepers are the most effective in changing minds. These programs often spark lasting, significant interest in reptiles. Such programs inspire children to become tomorrow’s veterinarians, zookeepers, biologists, and conservationists. People will conserve what they love, and these interactive programs, providing reptile admiration, will ensure ongoing conservation efforts for reptiles.

Due to the increased reverence and understanding of these exceptional animals, reptile pets are not uncommon. They are increasingly popular, now being kept in around 5% of U.S. households (roughly 1 in 20), and fitting well with a number of modern lifestyles. Many pet reptiles have needs that are much easier to meet than more commonly kept pets. While the physical and emotional health benefits associated with pet ownership are becoming more well-known, reptile pets are also helping to make those benefits more accessible to people with allergies, in urban settings, or very busy schedules – people who would not otherwise be able to benefit from having a pet.

Some would argue that reptiles are associated with a risk of disease for people, however, this risk is in fact very similar to, or even slightly less than that encountered from the more mainstream pets, and even other people. Disease transmission from pet reptiles is easily prevented with good hygiene practices. These practices include keeping the reptile’s cage clean, washing hands after handling reptiles, not eating while holding reptiles, and not putting reptiles near your mouth, your food, or any places where you prepare meals.

Any pet should be seen as a major responsibility, requiring species-appropriate care for its entire life – and many reptile species are long-lived! Exactly what appropriate care consists of can vary widely, and should be carefully researched before bringing any pet home, reptile or otherwise.

When we do right by the animals under our care, we help promote others’ appreciation of them. It is not just our pets who benefit, but the people who interact with them, and conservation efforts for wild reptiles and their associated ecosystems as well. This is part of why USARK - United States Association of Reptile Keepers works to prevent misinformed legislation and government overreach; the benefits associated with reptiles kept under human care are far-reaching and multi-layered.

If you already love reptiles, please share your adoration. If you think they are slimy (reptiles are not slimy) and you do not like them “just because,” please take some time to learn about these incredible animals to overcome your fears, and even clear up some misconceptions. Reptiles are remarkable animals and we want everyone to know it. Have a great Reptile Awareness Day!

If you want more reptile appreciation, you can find plenty of educational posts and fantastic photos on our page at USARK - United States Association of Reptile Keepers and our Instagram ().
