Patronus Therapy:
Told through the eyes of a Therapy Dog mom.
Tuesday, January 16
__________
We went with our usual outing partners, a golden and his handler. He was excited and ready to see people. But Presto seemed just to herself. We were standing talking to a woman, but Presto kept wanting to leave. I excused us and followed Presto to a lady that was leaning up against the wall in the hallway. P immediately sat and raised a paw high (what i call her wave). I did not cue this behavior but she was offering for a strange. It made me smile. The kind lady asked for her name, age, breed, what Presto does on her off time, everything. We talked up a storm over Presto and she smiled and gave a chuckle or two.
Presto stood tall in front of her so not to put her feet on her legs. The woman leaned down took Prestos face in her hands and gave her nose a kiss; all the while, P's nub was going nuts and you could see the sparkle in both pairs of eyes that stared at eachother.
A few seconds had passed with the two of them smiling at eachother before a door across the hall opened.
A younger lady stepped out and smiled at Presto. She looked at me and told me she could hear me explaining tricks and asked if I minded showing her mom. Her mom was on oxygen and couldn't get up from her recliner in the room. We couldnt go in so we stood in the doorway to perform.
We went through our normal routine. Started with a wave and a shy, did a couple fancy things and ended with a proper bow. I looked into the room now and then and the elder woman in the chair had a big smile and was laughing. At the end, she clapped for Presto and told us thank you for the show. I had Presto wave goodbye and say hi to the daughter before we left.
We made a few more rounds with our other team members. But Presto had had enough upon entering the other side of the building. She had gotten nervous with someone getting loud and anxious. We called it quits for the day and we all left. Always read your pup and end before its too much! When we got to the lobby, she relaxed and looked at me with her crooked "I did it" grin.
And with that, we were happy for the hearts we had touched.
