February is National Pet Dental Month—be sure to schedule your horse’s yearly dental exam with your Veterinarian. Here are a few indicators your horse may require a dental float:
1. Hesitant to eat or chew.
2. Fussy with the bridle; resistant to take the bit.
3. Losing weight.
4. Mouth odor.
5. Eating with head tilted to one side.

Struggling to find the perfect fit for your horse's turnout blanket? Here are a few helpful tips to be sure your horse is comfortable.

1. The neckline of your horse's blanket should lie smoothly above his shoulder without pulling. Make sure the front of the blanket fits correctly to prevent rub marks on your horse's shoulders.

2. A good fit means you'll be able to slide one hand between the blanket and your horse's withers. The blanket should sit in front of the withers and not behind; this will prevent soreness.

3. The blanket should cover your horse's barrel entirely; ending just below his elbow and stifle.

A few helpful guidelines to help you decide when to blanket your horse. Blanketing is necessary to reduce the effects of cold weather when your horse is:
- Body clipped.
- Very young or very old.
- Lacking adequate shelter available during turnout and the wind chill temperatures drop below 5 degrees.
- At a body condition score of 3 or less.
- In conditions with a chance of getting wet from freezing rain (becoming wet from snow, is not a problem; the snow acts as insulation on the horse's back).

If you decide to blanket your horse, be sure the blanket fits properly. Remove the blanket at least twice a week to inspect it for damages and examine your horse's body condition score.

Our History

Muddy and Inca is the progeny of two veterinarian brothers who believe all animal lovers deserve the fairest prices in caring for them. With decades of experience helping dairy and beef producers as Leedstone, they began to extend the same philosophy to families with pets and horses. And Muddy and Inca became a reality.

Muddy and Inca are the names of two beloved black labs of Dr. David Tomsche, DVM, and his family. For many years, Muddy was a trusted companion and friend to the family. Inca was able to befriend Muddy for only a short time before Muddy passed away in 2013—and has since become as loyal, trusted and loved.
