It has been a great start for our herd this year with a good handful of litters that made their appearance these last few months. But sometimes for reasons unknown there are tragic events that happen as well. This year, the universe seems to be dealing our Rabbitry a crappy deck.
First loss of the year was one of our homegrown girls and almost all of her litter. The entire loss was due to a sudden onset of bloat. We did manage to save two kits that will be retained to keep our program and progress going.
Our second loss was a momma that passed because of a dog attack. So we had to foster her kits between two other does. (They are doing wonderfully btw)
And our third issue in 3 months consecutively, I found my prized doe Tinker Bell without the use of her hind legs this afternoon. (She was fine yesterday) But I’m going to have to make a decision soon on what to do with her. She has 7 kits that are not yet ready to start eating and need mother’s milk for another 3 weeks at least. We are taking this hit hard and understand it happens sometimes. But if Tinker Bell has to pass over the Rainbow Bridge this will be a hard hit for us. Loosing 3 wonderful does in three moths.
You can’t win them all. And when you do it seems like the reaper comes back to humble you.
