Germany’s Easter Bunny - From Our Heimat to America.

Did you know that many of the Easter customs we celebrate today come from Germany?

The bunny and decorated eggs are all of German origin and were introduced to America in the early 1700’s by Pennsylvania German Immigrants.

The bunny as a symbol for Easter is first mentioned in writings in 16th Century Germany and is believed to date back even earlier.

The first edible Easter bunnies, made of pastry and sugar were also first produced in Germany in the 1800’s. Shortly after, these same traditions arrived in America brought by another wave of German Immigration.

One of the most beautiful and enjoyable customs our ancestors brought with them was to teach their children the art of building nests of grass which would then be placed in spring gardens for the Easter Bunny to fill during the night. Children would find them the next morning stuffed with brightly decorated eggs etched with beautiful German patterns.

This is the origin of the present-day Easter Basket filled with filled eggs and sweets. Placing these sweets in the garden eventually transforms into the tradition of the Easter Egg Hunt and the rest is all history.

β€œO’Tannenbaum” Today we remember the German-Americans who first introduced our beautiful German Christmas tree to America and made it what later became the world wide symbol of Christmas.

When we Americans celebrate Christmas; most are never made aware that the customs they use to celebrate are largely of German origin. In the very beginning the first Christmas trees seen in America by other Americans were set up by German Hessian soldiers in 1776 during the American Revolution.

The first record of the now traditional American custom of going out to cut down or buy a tree was established in 1821 when a Pennsylvanian German family by the name of Hensel cut down a tree in Lancaster and brought it home to decorate. Little did these early German Settlers know that this very German tradition was to become a custom practiced by millions of American Christians of all ethnic backgrounds across the continent and of course later the world.

The Saturday Evening Post once described Pennsylvania German homes where the trees were visible through the windows and the green boughs were laden with fruit and candles that sparkled into the night. It’s clear to see why other Americans would soon become mesmerized by the warmth and beauty of our German Christmas traditions.

As the flow of German Immigration spread across the land, so did our beautiful Christmas tree along with our other German Christmas customs. The idea of having a community Christmas tree was first established in 1841 by Karl Minnegerode in Williamsburg, VA. He started a tradition that brings great pride to our community each year when we light the National Christmas Tree.

A German-American by the name of Thomas Nast, also remembered in history as the father of the American Cartoon, created the first picture of Santa Claus. His image of Santa Claus became the symbol all Americans recognize to this day. Christmas wouldn’t look very much like Christmas as we know it without the influence of the German-speaking immigrants.

Some other Germanic contributions are the wreath, ornaments, the tradition of gift giving, stollen, cookies, gingerbread houses, Christmas markets, advent calendars, Christmas Choirs, and of course some of the greatest music ever written such as Silent Night the most cherished Christmas hymn in the world. Frohe Weihnachten.

German-American Day "October 6th"

We would like to wish everyone a Happy German-American Day!

Today German-Americans will celebrate their ethnic holiday, remembering their history and heritage, as well as their participation in the creation of and contribution to the prosperity of the United States of America.

German-American Day was officially proclaimed in 1987 by Ronald Reagan. Germans were already a presence at the first English colony of Jamestown, VA as early as 1608, but on this day we commemorate the first official German settlement in the USA and the immigrants who arrived in Pennsylvania on October 6th 1683 and founded Germantown, PA.

This important celebration is shared nationwide with government officials, legislators, state governors, mayors and all Americans. Between 50 and 60 million Americans claim some sort of German speaking ancestry and constitute the largest single ethnic group in the United States.

For more than four centuries, German-Americans have helped build and strengthen this country. German-Americans constitute the historically staunchest supporters of the democratic values and principles of this country, fighting by your side in every war this country has ever engaged in, including those wars against their own ancestral homeland.

They were the first to oppose and object to slavery, General von Steuben and his German-American soldiers fought for and helped to make American independence possible. George Washington with gratitude stated von Steuben was a decisive factor in winning the Revolutionary War. So be proud today and celebrate well.

Remember: If you happen to have any family recipes passed down from Pommern that you would like to share, please share them here with us. and perhaps "Like" our page! "Klicken√ GefÀllt mir" Danke!
