Captured a bit of Zahras training today so I can look back and see where we were. She's 16 weeks now, still full of independence, you can almost watch the wheels turn in her head, she definitely has her own mind! She's very outgoing, social and loves everyone and everything.

Today was the very first time I've tossed her a dead pigeon, and outside at that, check cord was needed :)

Primarily up to this point I've focused on building a relationship with her, working on settling in the house, and exposure outside on trail walks and anywhere we go, she's handled it all very well!

It's going to be a fun little adventure with this girl!

Introducing: Blacksnout POH's Iconic Gamble "Zahra"

(VC Iconic Showtime Charlie X DC Gambles Low Country Blues Man SH)

Today marks 1 week of Zahra joining our family, and yes, this one is here to stay, she is not a foster, she is ours and we have some big goals to achieve with this little girl!!!

Zahra has already traveled more miles in her short life than many will. We picked her up in Northern New York and have been slowly adjusting and settling at home with Blaze and River this past week!

She's going to be a fun addition and we look forward to many many memories with her!!!

Blaze and his ladies ;)

The three amigos together again, we have plans to get out hunting this afternoon for what may be our last chance before the season shuts down for the deer hunters....

Ellie and River decided to come into heat a week apart and a few months later than anticipated...with everything going on in the next year, we are pushing our plans to breed Ellie X Blaze until summer or late winter 2026 allowing us to give her a shot at NAVHDA UT testing and working towards her MH title, as well as finish Blazes MH title and another shot at the elusive UT 1.

Ellie has turned into a reliable grouse dog, with an exceptional nose, easy handling, quick to learn, and super cooperative. Pairing her with Blaze, who does not lack in drive or independence, has us very excited for the possibilities of these puppies....but this will have to wait until timing for us is more adequate.

Living life to the fullest and taking full advantage of every opportunity to be out and making memories with these dogs!

Monday we spent the day chasing grouse and woodcock.

Tuesday we were asked to help out at another tower hunt up north of us, so we played retriever dogs and then walk up pheasant hunt with River.

Wednesday (today) we drove north to the Upper Peninsula and chased Michigan Sharptail. River found 1 single with a nice point, but the bird evaded the shots fired. Blaze lived his best field dog life today and Ellie also did a nice job covering the field, just didn't see any birds (until we were walking out and saw a covey in a private land fly out to roost, and then 2 alongside the road on our drive home)

Tomorrow it's back to work, but....if it's a short day we have plans to be back in the woods for a short evening hunt.

Friday, Blaze goes for his shoulder CT scan, despite looking good recently, I'm still convinced he needs to be seen by a specialist for fear the limp will continue to pop up at the most inconvenient times. I want him back to 100% full time!

Best time of year, busy, but full of memories!!

Montanta Sharptail Opener 2025

We enjoyed 6 days of hunting, covering miles and miles of open prairie. Brandon and I were able to shoot a few sharpies and huns over our dogs, and enjoyed watching them discover the vast open fields!!

I failed to update this page during that time, but hope by sharing this album of pictures of our time out west you can catch a glimpse of why traveling and making memories with each other and our dogs is so special. These dogs have taken me places I would have never dreamed!!!

River and Ellie each developed into wonderful prairie dogs this trip, they opened their range, figured out the cover to find birds in, and pointed and retrieved multiple. I couldn't have been happier with the progress this year!

Blaze, words can't express how grateful I was to have him be healthy enough to run and hunt this trip, after months of struggling with his shoulder injury and keeping him on restrictions, my only hope was getting him to this point. He looked like his normal, driven, pure hunting dog self. Though he didn't see as many birds I was reminded that this dog was just as happy to be doing what he was bred for, running and hunting to the ends of the earth!

I will continue making a west trip a priority for as long as we can, it's such a nice change of scenery, and the learning experience alone is what has me wanting more!

Haven't updated on this page in awhile, we have been busy!

This weekend we took Blaze to a field trial, after hunting him since Sept 1 in Montana, then Michigan and allowing him to break at shot I didn't expect high expectations, but we had the weekend free and seemed like a good enough reason to drop by and play the game.

Amateur Gun Dog on Saturday we made it to our first bird find and sure as I expected, he held through flush and broke at shot, with a flawless retrieve of the bird he wasn't supposed to have in his mouth 😂 so we proceeded with our donation and walk of shame.
That evening we did a short refresher session with a fellow trialer and he had a nice honor and good manners.

Sunday morning we did another short refresher with a training friend, sending Blaze a reminder we are not shooting or retrieving birds after shot. This seemed to help as we haven't done any real training since beginning of August.

Amateur Limited Gun Dog ran Sunday afternoon, though we didn't earn a placement, we did make it clean through the entire course, not as crisp and clean as I've seen him in the past, but pulling a hunting dog straight out of season and expecting a new level of perfection is hard. I'm happy with the 2 birds we were able to work today, and not having to take the walk of shame back to the truck. I'll call that a win!

And now we shall return back into hunt mode!

River ran both days as clean up dog, free practice (or used my entry fees to pay for the leftover birds) either way, she had a great time and had multiple lovely steady finds and her first real covey flush of quail!

Training with today in our hometown.

Found new water for duck search, River and Ellie are still learning that there will be ducks out there to find when I send them, it's going to be a good foundation for next year's goals!

Blaze and Maggie preparing for their UT test this end of summer, whatever happens come test day I know we will have some fine dogs to hunt with this fall!!!!

I was all smiles today when I cut Blaze loose and the field we were in allowed him to get out 300+ yards, found his bird at nearly 250 and waited for us, just phenomenal to watch him run and cover ground, I've missed it, beyond happy my boy is back in action!!
