After we teach commands with food we layer in things like the leash, and accountability.
Miss Wrigley was super excited about her leash and kept jumping at it, so I layered ecollar over it to do some corrections that are less physical and more subtle. She responded beautifully and this was her first time on leash working heel without food to reward and guide her every move.

I decided to use the Treat & Train to help shape Place with Wrigley. Because of her food obsession and her excited elimination I wanted to remove myself from the equation for the most part.
Every time she did something closer to the end result of Place I would click the Treat & Train which then results in a beep and dispenses food. She worked her way up to go to the bed, get up there, lay down, and stay there until I release you.
Tools really are the bridge to communication!

One of the benefits of home based training…. The dogs here learn skills like how to navigate a doggy door. Passive training that goes a long way!

Working on Heel with Miss Wrigley! I swear half the battle was getting her to stop jumping at my hand for food. She’s wild for her kibble!
I firmly believe teaching a dog how to walk well on a leash requires teaching them WHERE to walk next to the human, the leash comes in way later. Remember, heel is a position (at my left hand side) not a command to walk.
I say she’s rocking it!

After recalls (come to me and sit) we worked on not only downs, but settling around food. Wrigley is CRAZY for food, and she also piddles when she gets excited… so you can imagine the aftermath. 😂
Here we are only rewarding calm, settled behaviors with food and pets. The calmer we can be, less pee!
#dogtraining #mesadogtrainer #thedoghouseacademyaz
Then we learn down. 🥰
After we teach the down position using luring and/or shaping we then use the food as a reward for the behavior vs a bribe to do it. That’s how you get consistent commands…. That and repetition, repetition, repetition.
Peep her cute widdle teefs at the end. They’re so cute! 🤓🥺😭

First order of business… engagement and come!
Here’s Millie Girl working on the name game with her dinner. 😍

Don’t mind the baby voice…… I can’t help it. Lol!
While this muzzle is slightly too large… it’s good to help this boy understand what muzzles are and know how to wear them and function inside of it. Especially since sometimes he uses his teeth to communicate!

Showing off all of his skills in a video for Mom & Dad!
Check out how much he’s leaned in two weeks! I couldn’t be more proud. 🤗

He’s always in a race to get back to the house and onto the couch… his favorite place to be! 😂
He’s learning to listen to me and use his obedience to override his nerves.. symptoms and foundation… see how they fit together??

Miss Lisa and working hard with Holly and Scout!
These two love to pull but love their walkies too, so we are putting some reps in working on heel!
Sometimes it’s easier for owners to do a dog on each side, sometimes we do both on the same. Just depends on the people and the situation!

Cupid showing off his obedience skills!
After a few days of relationship building and decompression we start on all of the obedience. With scared doggos like this having a solid foundation is super important. This way we have something to fall back on during intense situations.
You can’t necessarily train the fear, but you can train the symptoms.

Progresssssss! 🤗🤗🤗
Cupid likes his crate a lot. Which is a great thing for a nervous doggo to like! The easier and more predictable I can make life… the better!

Taking Cupid out of his kennel for the first time took some time… he’s a scared boy and knows how to use those cute ears to his advantage lol!
Don’t mind the crate roll, it was caught on one of the blankets and I didn’t want it slipping while I was working with him and causing a potential issue. I try not to freak them out more… but sometimes I have to make adjustments to make sure we are safe.
I used the slip lead to lasso him, he had tried to bite me a few times prior just moving around the crate and putting my hands in, so I wasn’t going to reach right in and put the leash on him. He has a history of biting over collars and harnesses. The last thing I need to do is pattern another bite with me.
When it comes to fearful/biting dogs slow and steady wins. Getting the slip lead on him was difficult as he pressed his head back and knows how to use those ears to his advantage!

Threshold training was also super important for this little door darter!
I think thresholds is one of the most important things we can teach a dog. Being respectful of the doorway and when they’re allowed and not allowed to go through can keep your dog safe!

Doing some longline recalls with Skylar in the front yard….
Huskies are notorious for their tendency to run, and this little Pomsky is no different!
She knows come in the house and is very good at it, but we need to practice outside and with a longline to help her practice that skill in a different environment but with the longline there for safety and to allow us to use it for correction should she decide not to come when called.

Mr. Pippin one of my In Home Lesson clients showing off his Place command with his dad!
He has this habit of hesitating before taking the food reward… we can’t help but laugh at the funny faces he makes 😂

Here’s a Timelapse of Skylar learning the Place command.
Place is basically, go to that bed, turn and face me, lay down and stay there until I give you something else to do. It is one of my favorites to teach, and one of my favorite tools to give owners!
You can see how she gains confidence going on the bed and the quickly progresses into the command itself. 🙂

Supervising play is extremely important. Dogs who are playing nicely can shift quickly into a scuffle.
There’s a moment in this video where you hear me verbally correct Skylar because the body language shifted. She did great and adjusted her play and they continued on happily. SO proud of these cute babies!
