Memorial Day Safety Tips from Doc!

Memorial Day unofficially marks the start of the summer season across the nation. Here in Texas, it feels like summer is already here, and it looks like it’s going to be a hot one! For many of us, the three-day weekend includes trips to the beach, cookouts or lounging by the pool. Don’t let your dog near the picnic basket or your delicious spread of food. Your pet should never be given human foods, as their sensitive stomachs often can’t tolerate even a small amount. Fatty foods from your picnic or barbecue can lead to an uncomfortable and painful condition called pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a condition where the pancreas becomes inflamed, and enzymes that usually are inactive until they reach the small intestine become active in the pancreas. This is a painful condition for your pet and can lead to:
Swollen abdomen
Diarrhea
Lethargy
Loss of Appetite
Vomiting
Restlessness

There are also plenty of foods that are dangerous- or even lethal for your pet- if consumed in large amounts. These are often found around summer festivities. They include, but are not limited to:
Grapes, Raisins & Currants
Chocolate
Sweets with Xylitol- an artificial sweetener
Onions & Garlic

Although not poisonous, other foods that can cause major problems are:
Peach Pits
Corn Cobs
Cherry Pits
Chicken, Chop and Beef bones

All of these items can pose either a choking hazard or if ingested create an obstruction in the stomach, intestines or bowels which may likely require surgery to remove.

Enjoy the holiday weekend but be sure to keep your furbabies safe!

Microchips are an essential backup option for pet identification but should never be the main one. Reading a microchip takes a special scanner, one that an animal control officer or shelter will have, but your neighbor down the street will not. And if your dog or cat wanders off, it’s likely to be a private citizen who encounters them first. That’s why, in the event of accidental separation, identification tags are your pet’s first ticket home.

Peek-a-Boo, we see you! Lucy was brought into UC for hiding and an upset stomach. Our feline friends tend to hide when they are sick due to instinctual reasons for survival and self-protection. Hiding can also be a result of psychological factors such as fear, stress, or changes in the environment.

🐾 Spring Tips from Dr. Chambers 🐾
Lilies are highly toxic and possibly fatal (if not treated immediately) to our feline friends. All parts of the plant are toxic and toxicity can be seen within hours of ingestion; symptoms include but not limited to vomiting, inappetence and lethargy.
While Easter Lily is the more common flower, any of the Lilium species can cause toxic insult.

Calla Lilies and Peace Lilies can cause irritation and oral inflammation.
Lily of the Valley contains chemicals called cardenolides which are cardiotoxic.
If your cat consumes any portion of the lily, prompt treatment is key to survival and minimizing irreversible kidney damage.

If you are wanting to garnish your home this spring, please check out ASPCA’s website and research what plants/flowers are pet safe!

Life is sweet, so don’t let pets near treats sweetened with xylitol. If ingested, gum, candy and other treats that include this sweetener can result in hypoglycemia (a sudden drop in blood sugar)
If you are worried your pet may have ingested xylitol, give us a call, 972-270-5404 🐾
