With April Showers, comes an increase in Parvo cases.
Parvo is a gastrointestinal virus that infects unvaccinated and undervaccinated dogs and primarily puppies. Parvo lives in the soil for an extended period of time and rain along with foot traffic causes it to spread unknowingly. Parvovirus can be brought in on shoes and body. We urge Pet parents to keep their pets vaccinated and to quarantine undervaccinated puppies. Keep feet clean removing any shoes or clothes when a susceptible pet is in the home.
Stay safe out there!!!!

As a dog parent, it is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of common illnesses so you can seek veterinary help for your canine friend as soon as possible. Read on for information about diseases and other medical inflictions that frequently impact dogs.

April 13-19 is Dog Bite prevention week. Here are known tips to help factors that may instigate a bite. Socialize your dog by exposing them to controlled situations, the more regular exposure the better. Alway supervise young children when around dogs. Take the time to teach the basic commands to build obedience and trust. Ensure your pet stays up to date on vaccinations and keep them active to support health and mental stimulation. Obey leash laws and ensure fenced yards are secure. Know the signs that your dog is stressed, uncomfortable, or showing aggression, and be prepared to take action when needed. If your dog seems uneasy, remove them from the situation to reduce the risk of biting.

The vast majority of dog bites are from a dog known to the child—his or her own pet, a neighbor's or friend's. You can help prevent this from happening to your child. Please discuss with him or her the appropriate way to behave around dogs.

Top Four Easter Hazards for pets 🐾🐰🐣

1. Chocolate - Chocolate can cause gastrointestinal upset, pancreatitis, stimulation to the nervous system (hyperactivity, tremors and seizures) and elevation in heart rate. Not all chocolate is created equally—the darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is for pets.
2. Plastic Easter Grass - As this is not digestible, the grass can accumulate and cause a gastrointestinal obstruction. Signs include decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, +/- diarrhea.
3. Plants - During this time of year, there is an uptick of calls about Lilies and bulbs that bloom this time of year. Lilies (Lilium sp and Hemerocallis sp) can cause serious concerns for our feline friends. Exposure to any parts of the plant can result in kidney injury and gastrointestinal upset.
4. Fertilizers and Herbicides. Many people begin gardening and yardwork on Easter weekend, including the use of fertilizers and herbicides. Make sure these are stored where pets can't chew or puncture the bottle, and keep pets indoors while applying the products. Always follow label instructions and wait to let your pet out again until the product has been watered in or the ground is dry.
**If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.

This is Wilson, he got a little willful with a rooster resulting in a not so good encounter. One peck to the eye and all this damage occurred. It is recommended that he have the eye removed for his overall safety. All this couldn't lower his spirits though, he was a perfectly sweet boy throughout his visit. We wish little Wilson all the best during recovery.

Say Hello to Pepper! Pepper was coming in for a simple cherry eye but had went on a small adventure in the trees before being seen. Unfortunately that caused this beautiful girl to tear her cherry eye, making for a more complicated visit. We wish Pepper all the best in her healing process.
