Heatstroke in dogs can occur when a dog's environment is too hot, their muscles generate too much heat from exercise, or both. Dogs are more likely to develop heatstroke if they are without water, shade, or good airflow.
Early signs of heatstroke include:
• Heavy panting
• Rapid breathing
• Excessive drooling
• Dry mucous membranes
• Bright red gums and tongue
• Skin that's hot to the touch.
• Higher heart rate
• Hyperactivity
• Difficulty maintaining balance.
Other signs include: Vomiting (with or without blood), Diarrhea (with or without blood), Disorientation/stumbling, Weakness/collapse, and Seizures/death.
If you think your dog may have heatstroke, you should:
1. Move your dog to a shaded and cool area
2. Pour cool water over the dog
3. Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water
4. Continue to pour cool water over the dog until their breathing starts to settle.
5. Call your vet immediately.
You can also try cooling the air around your dog with a fan or by opening doors and windows.
To prevent heatstroke in your dog, you can:
• Keep the car cool.
• Ensure frequent stops.
• Keep water available.
• Avoid exercise during the warmest times of the day
• Ensure there is plenty of cool water and shade available.
• Don't leave pets inside hot, closed homes or garages.
• Avoid walking pets on hot sand, concrete, bitumen, or any other surfaces where heat is reflected.

Remember that they only have YOU to protect them, you are responsible for your dog.
