Hello everyone,

It’s been almost a year since I last posted, and I realize I basically fell off the face of the earth, This page will remain quiet for the foreseeable future, however, I'd love to share what I've been up to and what's coming next.

Over the past year and a half, I've been reassessing my career because I was feeling burnt out from in-person training for various reasons. The demand for virtual training in basic manners and puppy training wasn't meeting expectations either. Although I didn't plan to be away for so long, losing Charlie put a stop to everything.

Around this time last year, I began exploring the world of separation anxiety in dogs. I quickly realized that helping dogs feel safe in solitude and giving dog parents their freedom back was my new calling. Everything about separation anxiety training aligns perfectly with how I want to do business while still getting to be a dog trainer!

I applied and was accepted into the most prestigious separation anxiety certification programs led by . After four intensive months, I graduated as a Certified Separation Anxiety Trainer (CSAT).

Throughout all of this, I also welcomed a new puppy, Oliver, who is now 8 months old. He's the sweetest little dude, and he's teaching me new things every day. I've also been working a remote non-dog-related job and dedicating my free time to building my new business: Paws in Solitude Separation Anxiety Dog Training.

It's time for me to return to the dog training world and look forward to building new relationships with dog parents across North America. Head over to my new business page to follow along and stay in the loop.

Thank you for your support!

When looking a dog trainer, many choose based on price, which I totally understand.

However, it's important to remember that dog training is an unregulated industry and there are many methods trainers may use to accomplish your goals. Many of those methods are extremely harmful, both physically and mentally to the dog and there is an abundance of scientific research out there to back that claim.

Taking the time to actually read through a dog trainer's website or scrolling through their Facebook or Instagram page before reaching out to them should give you clear information about the methods and training philosphy they follow. Oftentimes the buzwords may be misleading so if you're unsure, ask the trainer specific questions about how they work with you and your dog. Always trust your gut.

Doing your due diligence is the first step in advocating for your dog's well-being.

Happy Happy Birthday to my forever little boy! 🎉 I'm in denial over Charlie getting older...I can't believe he is 9 years old today! 😭

9 years ago he came into my life at only 8 weeks and my life has never been the same. This boy has taught me more than I ever thought I could, not just about dog behavior, but about myself.

Every little and big decision around my life is made with Charlie in mind. I will and do anything and everything for this boy to make sure he always feels safe and happy and, while it can be stressful at times, I wouldn't have it any other way.

I tell Charlie everyday that I love him the most and that is truly an understatement! He is my life, my world, and my little baby butt boy 🥰

Special thanks to Roo’s Rockin’ Treats in Greenville, TX who made a custom cake to help us celebrate! She is a baker for humans but was happy to make a special treat for my special boy!

My super awesome realtor, Robin McCoy, has a podcast and she invited me on to talk with her about all things dogs, from dog behavior, to dog training, to the human side of dog training, and more!

Link to the podcast is in the original post and in the comments of this post. Take a listen and give me your thoughts! Interested in virtual dog training? Send me a message. I'd love to help!

In this week’s featured episode of my Crushing It with Your Tribe podcast, I speak with Juliette Jones about how dogs and their humans can learn to live in a more harmonious and cohesive environment. Juliette is a dog-trainer and -lover. She is based in the DFW area but has online/virtual dog services and dog training throughout multiple time zones.

Juliette has a love of dogs that started at a very early age, but it wasn't until her own dog, Charlie, started to experience some anxiety-based behaviors that Juliette realized really what her passion was. In 2019 she began her educational journey into all things "dog" by attending and graduating with distinction from Victoria Stilwell Academy and began working for her mentor in Georgia. in 2020 she moved to Fate, TX, where Inquiring Noses Dog Training LLC was born, which is a force-free, reward-based virtual dog training service.

Juliette has gone on to become a Fear-Free Professional and has earned the most recognized title of Certified Professional Dog Trainer-Knowledge Assessed through the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. Her educational journey is never-ending as she is always attending various webinars and taking courses in order to keep up with the latest science in dog training.

"[Force-free dog training] means that I do not use shock collars, I don't use prong collars, I don't use choke chains or slip leads or spray bottles. I don't even yell 'no' or s***k my dogs. My goal is to teach the dog what we want them to do rather than focus on what we don't want them to do. Because if we teach what we want and we reinforce it, make it the best thing ever for our dogs and teach them that it works for them, they will be more likely to preform those desirable behaviors over the undesirable behaviors when given the choice."

Take a listen to the episode and contact Juliette for all your dog training needs! All her contact info is included in the shownotes in the link below. Also available on your favorite podcast players!

Great tips from Thinking Canine! Does your puppy or dog ask for cuddles or do they enjoy their own space? My Charlie has never been much of a cuddler so I treasure every moment he chooses to lay next to me.

Congratulations on Team Scout for graduating from my (now discontinued) Disruptive to Delightful program!

In 10 weeks, Scout learned:

✔️how to wait on his place while guests walk in the door,
✔️how to hang out on his place when his family cooked in the kitchen (instead of jumping on the counter),
✔️how to greet people politely and on cue,
✔️how to walk on a loose leash,
✔️gained new coping skills when he sees other dogs on walks, through the front window, and through the fence in the backyard,
✔️how to come when called
✔️how to make good choices overall

All of this wouldn't have been possible without the dedication his mom put in to the whole process. They had a great relationship before training but their bond and partnership grew as they learned how to effectively communicate and understand each other.

You and your dog can learn all of these skills and more too! Contact me to schedule a FREE Virtual Discovery Call to get started. (link in comments)

Dogs deserve to give consent too. They also deserve to say no

It’s so easy to swoop in and pick up our cute adorable little puppy whenever we want to, isn’t it? It’s easy to pick up puppies without even considering how they must feel about it. After all, they’re small and they don’t fight much, so it must be OK, right?

While my puppy can’t tell me with words how she feels about being picked up, I can imagine how it would feel for me to be picked up by a very tall person at any time and for any reason. I might be a bit anxious, and I might try to keep my distance when the person reached for me.

Puppies sometimes develop behaviors of playing keep away or darting away at the last moment from our hands if they are unsure or conflicted about what may happen when we reach for them.

How can we prevent this behavior and help our puppy choose to be picked up?

I teach my puppy a cue that I’m going to pick her up. I put my hand in place gently under her belly and give the cue. I pause for a moment, and if she stays in place, I pick her up and then give her something she enjoys - petting or a tasty treat.

This helps her learn when she hears the cue and feels my hand, that I will be picking her up. She will learn what to expect the more consistently I do this. The reward after I pick her up helps her always associate being picked up by me with something good happening.

With several repetitions, she had learned what the cue meant and was actually giving a little hop up into my hands when she recognized the cue, even before I could start to lift her. This was the signal that she was giving her consent - that she wanted to be picked up and she recognized and was responding to my cue.

In order for this to truly be my puppy’s choice, though, she also needs the option to say no. If I put my hand in place and give the cue and she is dancing around or away from my hand, that is her telling me she’s not ready to be picked up.

What do I do then?

I remove my hands and stand back up. Within a moment, she will come back to me and stand still, which I interpret as her asking me to pick her up now. I can then put my hand in place and give the cue again to see if she responds by hopping into my hands.

If I need to move her from an area and she doesn’t want to be picked up, I can move her in other ways - by clipping on a leash or by leading her with my hand or a treat, for instance.

Allowing my puppy to make the choice and communicate yes and no to me helps build her trust in me. She knows that I will listen to her when she tells me what she prefers.

She is more cooperative when I do pick her up and rides contentedly in my arms. And she has learned to trust that my hands are gentle and won’t chase and grab her.

Plus, I think it’s really cool to have this type of conversation with my puppy. “Are you ready for me to pick you up now?” And she responds, “I sure am!”

How many times each day do you pick up your puppy or dog?

Not all behaviour is within our control!

There is nothing you could have done differently when it comes to your dog’s genetic makeup, personality and experiences (or lack thereof) before you acquired them.

But there is so much you CAN do to set them up for success, prevent behaviour problems from getting worse and make sustainable progress together. This starts from your decision to select a certain breed or type of dog and continues as you choose which professionals to help you and as you build your relationship with your dog, day-to-day.

Let’s remove blame and guilt from the equation and focus on the things we can change to live more harmoniously with our best friends, okay?

This is why virtual dog training is so beneficial!

The role of a dog trainer, whether in person or online, is to teach you, the dog parent, how to teach your dog the behaviors and skills they need to know to live successfully in your home.

As a dog trainer, I am there to guide and support you through the training journey. I give you the tools and knowledge necessary for you to be successful so you can feel empowered while building an incredible relationship with your dog.

It is up to you to take what I teach you and apply it to your every day life with your dog. Ultimately, you are your dog's trainer!

If you are dedicated to your dog and want your relationship to flourish, schedule a FREE Virtual Discovery Call or fill out the intake form to get started. Link in the comments.

It might sound odd to say a dog trainer won’t train your dog but it’s true. The only person who can do that is you.

You are the person your dog spends the vast majority of their time with. You are the person they have most interaction with. Who sets the boundaries, who has the opportunity to consistently reinforce behaviours, who chooses the environments your dog is exposed to, who has control over your dog's day to day life & experiences.

When you go to a weekly training class or have a weekly session your trainer isn’t really teaching your dog….they are teaching 𝘺𝘰𝘶 how to teach your dog. And your success will be determined by whether you take what you learn and implement it on a daily basis. Because even if you see your trainer or attend your class religiously every single week, week in week out, that still amounts to a tiny proportion of your dog's life ( just 0.6% of their week if the training session lasts 1 hour).

Your trainer's job is to give you the understanding, skills and confidence that will allow you to effectively teach your dog and to support and guide you through the process.

Your job is to put what you learn into practice.

In order to be successful with your dog, you must make sure your dog's needs are met, prevent undesirable behaviors from being practiced, and teach the desirable behaviors and skills that you do what your dog to perform!

You can't skip steps or rush. Everything should be done at your dog's pace. Be kind to your dog and be kind to yourself. You're both learning together.

Yup. I rarely actually teach sit or use the behavior very often anymore. There are way more useful skills that give the dog more mobility and choice.

Stop asking your dog to sit for everything!

INSISTING THAT YOUR DOG SITS EVERYTIME YOU ENGAGE HER, IS NOT NECESSARY

Lets talk about sits and this unpopular view. Guardians are obsessed with teaching and asking for a sit. Training schools teach this first. But why? For many dogs, they get NO attention or rewards without a sit whether they are puppies or senior dogs. They have to perform a trick, like sit, to get a reward. I don't ask for my 10 year niece to sit everytime I speak to her or give her something. Yes, I would like it if she was calm and not bouncing around the room while I'm trying to talk to her. But I don't ask her for a sit. I just ask her to calm down. I also don't ask her to perform a trick to get a reward. I reward her often due to benevolence...I'm a benevolent Aunt.

I don't teach sits to dogs. I reward calm behaviours...4 feet on the ground. If they sit or lie down, its their choice...I have 10 dogs at home and there is no chaos during food or treat time. I wait calmly till they are calm...

It's anti-evolutionary to insist on a sit, especially around unfamiliar people and in strange environments. They are innately always vigilant and alert to threats in the environment and insisting on them sitting may make a scared, anxious or reactive dog uncomfortable as they feel vulnerable. So its their choice. Sit or stand...just be calm. Asking fearful dogs to sit in the presence of unfamiliar people and dogs is putting your dog in a very vulnerable position.

When working with dogs with low impulse control, then default sits may be a strategy to calm them and allow for slow thinking. But again, be cognizant about the environment and the dogs personality before asking for a sit.

I believe in choices...choice based behaviour modification. The choice to be calm gets a reward from me👊

Again...aim for happiness and relationship as opposed to obedience. Be a benevolent guardian. Not one seeking control with every engagement.

Edit - please read the link in the comments re physical ailments which sits can cause or make these issues worse.

Personally, I'd rather be inside but Charlie LOVES this weather, so we compromise by alternating between inside and outside throughout the day so both of our needs are met. 🥶🐾

Does your dog hate having their nails clipped or dremeled? A scratchboard is a great way to help maintain your dog's nails while working on helping your dog feel better about having their paws handled and any pressure, strange feelings, and sounds associated with getting a PETicure. It's also a great way to just maintain their nails between grooming appointments.

Your dog can learn to file their own nails and it's a completely reinforcing experience because it is stress-free, gives the dog more choice, and it's fun!

You can buy an already-made scratchboard (link in comments - nonaffiliate) or you can make one yourself! All you need is a board of some kind (I bought a single shelf from Home Depot), some sandpaper (30 to 80 grit, depending on your dog's size and comfort level), and duct tape to put it all together.

So you're interested in working with Inquiring Noses Dog Training but not quite sure about doing things virtually.

I get it! There is a sense of comfort in having a professional in your home every step of the way. But I'm here to tell you virtual dog training is just as effective, if not more so! Why? Because YOU are your dog's trainer while having the professional guiding you throughout the training process.

If you are on the fence, I am offering a 30-minute one-time trial session that will give you a preview of what virtual dog training is like. I will teach you how to teach your dog to nose-target your hand. If you love the experience and feel more confident about virtual training, the cost of this session will be applied to your Virtual Consultation if scheduled within 14 days.

Why nose targeting?

Touch is such a versatile behavior! Every dog and human can benefit from it regardless of training goals. It can be used as a foundation for other behaviors and skills, such as leash walking and recall, for puppies learning how to appropriately interact with hands, can help build confidence around hands, and so much more! It's also a great way to help humans practice their marker and reward timing.

Whether you feel great about continuing with virtual training or not, you will walk away with a new and useful skill!

Hu***ng is a normal dog behavior, however, like all other dog behaviors, there could be different meanings. It's so important to pay attention to context, dog body language, and other behaviors in order to figure out why your dog is hu***ng.

Sometimes it's not a big deal and the behavior can continue without issue, sometimes it's not appropriate in different situations and another behavior needs to be learned to replace it, and sometimes it's much more serious, such as a medical issue.

The methods you use to train your dog matters. The type of relationship you want to have with your dog matters.

The idea that you have to be the "alpha" or "pack leader" is scientifically outdated and only causes more harm than good.

Would you rather a dog who stops an undesirable behavior because they are scared of you or because you have taught them that another behavior is more reinforcing?

Would you rather constantly tell your dog "no", or find more "yes" moments?

So much YES in this video!
