Random Thoughts of the Day:
*You hear ALOT as a breeder, oh my gawd she/he/they must be rolling in the dough.$$$
*You hear oh they must be greedy, or going on vacations or living the large type of lifestyle
* You hear oh they must live fancy lives, lives of luxury
* You simply have heard it all
BUT
What you fail to realize is that is a far stretch from the truth!
So, let me educate you once again with a post to make you come back down to reality and realize how much it costs and if like any business you properly invest you'd be lucky to break even around 5-7 years of properly and ethically breeding.
First off let's start with just getting a puppy/dog
* You have to properly research thr breed of your choice(takes YEARS of educating/learning/seeking & asking advice and mentorship
* anywhere from 2000-5000 plus, a pup pending akc, breeding rights, showing rights, location, pedigree, etc
* Now let's break down vetting/vaccinations, flea/Heartworm, testing,fecals, deworming, vet visits, etc for EACH pup you have
(YEARLY at minimum without issues such as your puppy ate something, surgery costs, etc) equals at minimum in today's costs= $700 plus
* Now let's add for EACH pup you have costs of Food, potty pads, grass pads, litter/litter box, bedding, washable p*e pads YEARLY= at minimum $1000
* Now let's add puppy gates, Crates, enrichment toys, blankets, etc = at minimum $1000-$1500 plus
**Now keep in mind that you can't utilize your pup for breeding until at LEAST 18-24 months for a bitch and a tad younger for a male**
* Now let's add in the COST of UTILITIES such as POWER/WATER with the CONSTANT loads of laundry (me personally at LEAST 6 loads a day of dog laundry NOT including my human laundry) YEARLY= at LEAST $6000 PLUS
* Vitamins/supplements, etc YEARLY = at minimum $500-$1000plus
**Now let's add you start your breeding program costs**
Average breeder if doing it correctly
(Testing on parents, OFA'S, food, vaccines, progesterone testing, deworming, supplies to whelp, puppy bags to go home with families, VET costs, medical supplies, health certificates, and sooo much more) average per litter only= at minimum $5000 PLUS(go WAY higher)
* C-section costs= $3000-$10,000 pending locations and if it's an emergency
*Not to mention everything listed above, has drastically increased in price. Vets, dog food, toys, etc. We do not question the price, we pay it!!!
* Now let's add the countless of sleepless nights being by mom's side, puppies we raise, puppies we loose, moms we loose, all the emotions it takes on your mind & soul is 100% priceless and something none of us take lightly.
* Absolutely π« time off
* Absolutely π« vacations(I have not been on a vacation in 12 years.)
* Whelping a litter(I'd dare you to try it)
* Let's definitely not forget if you are showing and traveling to title a dog for a ribbon and status that will better your program and the breed itself(THOUSANDS)
* Communication we spend DAILY(nights ,days, weekends, on the phone, emails, texts). With new puppy parents & past. I offer lifetime support, with advice.
All of this and sooo much more we do and so much you DON'T see behind the scenes! So, next time you make a remark to someone that breeds, you must be in it for............ OR you must roll in the $$$$........OR I could do that.........OR must be nice........OR..........I DARE you to try it! I DARE you to invest into any program/business OR offer a helping hand to a breeder and you'll think TWICE about your remarks you so bluntly make or false ASSumptions you have about one!!!!
So you either go with it, to get a healthy, great quality puppy or simply do not waste my time and move on. Simple as that!
Sincerely,
A damn good dachshund breeder/fur momma
