It's National Veterinary Receptionist Week! Let's take a moment and thank all of the veterinary receptionists out there who go above and beyond every day! If you are stopping by our hospitals this week, make sure to tell our receptionists how much they are appreciated - we sure do love them!
Veterinary Receptionists hands-down have the hardest job in the hospital. They have seen it all, dealt with it all, experienced exhaustion, no bathroom breaks, no lunch breaks, and still have been able to keep a smile on their faces to ensure our clients and patients get the best possible care. We couldn't do it without YOU! We are so grateful for each and every one of you every day. Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week!

IT’S OFFICIAL‼️We are now performing Computed Tomography (CT) Scans! Our CT suite is completed and fully functioning. We are super excited to be able to offer this diagnostic capability to our rural region! CT Scans provide exceptional 3D images of bone and soft tissue, which are not obtainable with standard x-rays. This is HUGE when it comes to the veterinary world with diagnosing your fur babies and performing the appropriate treatment plan/course of action for them. All of the images are submitted to a board-certified radiologist for evaluation.
Our goal is to not only benefit the public and our patients, but to be able to provide important diagnostic capabilities for other veterinary hospitals to utilize in determining the best course of treatment for their patients as well. We are now accepting patient referrals!

If you are a veterinary hospital in the surrounding area and would like more information, please contact us at 570-376-2800 or [email protected]

Can you tell what “season” it is in rural north central Pennsylvania? These housemates had a “ruff” start to their day this morning. Thankfully, we were able to help and we removed the majority of the quills under general anesthesia! Both of them are now back home recovering 🤗

Porcupines pose a risk for pets all over rural North America. Their quills are modified hairs that are covered with scales that act like fishhook barbs, causing the quills to keep moving inward and deeper into the tissue.
⬇️ Picture below in the comments ⬇️
Porcupine quills can puncture the skin and move through muscle, ultimately penetrating into body cavities and internal organs. Because the quills carry bacteria with them, once they pe*****te the skin they can serve as a source of infection and abscesses.

Keep in mind that porcupines are nocturnal. 🌙 They do most of their foraging at night. They have poor eyesight, move slowly, and are not aggressive. Their number one defense mechanism is their quills.

COMMON MYTHS & MISCONCEPTIONS:

- Do porcupines shoot or throw their quills?
The answer is NO. Porcupines cannot shoot their quills at an assailant. However, the quills are easily pulled from the porcupine’s skin once they come into contact with an animal attacker. Porcupines will also use their quill-filled tail like a club, swinging it at a potential threat.

- I heard that I should cut the quills in order to make them easier to remove. Should I do that if my dog gets quills?
The answer is NO. This is a common misconception that cutting embedded porcupine quills will “deflate” them, making it easier to remove them. Cutting the shaft makes the quill splinter more easily, which ultimately makes it harder to remove. It may also allow for segments of quills to become lodged in the tissues.

- Can I remove porcupine quills from my dog myself?
You should always let a veterinary professional remove the quills. Removing porcupine quills without the benefit of sedation or anesthesia and potent pain relief is extremely painful. This can result in a struggle, which can push the quills deeper, and a dog may lash out and bite, without meaning to hurt you.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR DOG GETS QUILLED:

Minimize your dog’s movements, and prevent them from rubbing their face, as this may drive quills deeper, making them more difficult or impossible to remove. Get to a veterinarian as quickly as possible. Dogs need deep sedation or general anesthesia in order to have porcupine quills removed safely. As many quills as possible will be removed, but it is important to understand that there may be quills that cannot be removed. Any that cannot be removed will be monitored for migration and any complications that may arise.

Let’s talk about Heartworms!

Before we get started:
More information can be found on the American Heartworm Society’s website. The link is listed below ⬇️ in the comments!

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in pets.

What are Heartworms?
Heartworms are worms that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs of the body. These worms can grow up to a foot long! 😳 The microfilaria are transmitted by MOSQUITOS 🦟 when they feed off of an infected host and then feed off of your pet.

Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats and ferrets, but heartworms also live in other mammal species, including wolves, coyotes, foxes, sea lions and—in rare instances—humans. Because wild species such as foxes and coyotes live in proximity to many urban areas, they are considered important carriers of the disease.

The dog is a natural host for heartworms, which means that heartworms that live inside of a dog mature into adults, mate and produce offspring. If untreated, their numbers can increase, and dogs have been known to harbor several hundred worms in their bodies.

PREVENTION is far easier than treatment when it comes to Heartworm disease. We recommend keeping your dog on heartworm prevention year-round. The American Heartworm Society sets the standards for which we prescribe heartworm medication, so it is required to have a heartworm blood test (which also tests for 3 tick-borne diseases as a plus) every year to ensure that your pet is heartworm free before administering heartworm medication. Heartworm prevention medication does NOT kill adult heartworms, but it CAN kill the microfilaria traveling in the bloodstream. Administering heartworm prevention medication when a pet has an active heartworm infection can be fatal because the preventive medication may cause the microfilaria to suddenly die, triggering a shock-like reaction and possibly death.

This entire week is dedicated nationally to all of the the veterinary technicians out there! Happy National Vet Tech week!

“SOMEWHERE OUT THERE, IN THIS MOMENT,
A VET TECH IS DOING 10 THINGS AT THE
SAME TIME TO SAVE YOUR CAT or DOG, ALL WHILE HOLDING THEIR BLADDER BECAUSE THERE IS NO TIME TO P*E, STARVING BECAUSE THEY MISSED THEIR BREAK, WHILE BEING P*ED, POOPED, OR BLED ON AND THEY ARE MISSING THEIR PETS BECAUSE THEY ARE TAKING CARE OF
YOURS. THE TIME IT TOOK YOU TO READ THIS, THE VET TECHS AROUND THE WORLD ARE SAVING LIVES! LOVE THE VET TECHS AND APPRECIATE THEM!”

It takes a certain kind of person to be a veterinary technician - it is definitely not for the faint of heart. All of you go above and beyond everyday, and we appreciate you more than you could ever know 🥰 THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU!

His name is Stubby. He is approximately 3 years old and neutered. His current owner loves him very much and is heartbroken that she is having to rehome him.
