One thing I always explain to clients when they come in for an evaluation, or start training with me, is the importance of the relationship they are in with their dog. The fact is, as dog owners, we are in a relationship with our dogs, whether that is a healthy relationship or unhealthy relationship is what we need to focus on.

See, first we must determine what a healthy relationship looks like, which seems to be easy when we look at relationships humans have with other humans. However, when it comes to the relationship with their dogs we seem to have a harder time understanding that. Here is the thing, the basis and foundation of a healthy relationship is the same, whether it is between two humans, or a human and a dog. Healthy relationships have boundaries and both parties benefit one another. If you were to see a friend in a relationship with their significant other, and your friend was always bending over backwards to make the other person happy, or do things for them However, their significant other would go off and cheat, and never did anything to help or benefit your friend. You would probably be quick to say something or at least think your friend should end that relationship because it is unhealthy and unfair.

Meanwhile, dog owners will let their dogs run around impulsively doing things, jumping on them, barking at them to demand attention, chew up the owners belongings, and even pull them the entire time they go on a walk. The dog only gives the owner the attention or listens when the owner has something they want, like a treat for example. When we see this, most people will talk about how the dog loves their person and they just want to be around them, and the owner will talk about how much they love their dog. However, what we are seeing is an unhealthy one sided relationship.

So, how do we address this as dog owners? We start to adding boundaries, and showing the dog how the behaviors we want from them will lead to the things THEY want. What do we create with this? We create the dog giving the owner the calm behavior that creates peace and enjoyment, while the dog also benefits and gets things in return.

It is not about establishing an "Alpha", or "forcing" the dog to do things. It is about showing the dog what behaviors lead to an outcome they find undesirable, and which behaviors lead to an outcome they find desirable.

If you are ready to start building a healthy relationship with your dog then reach out to me. I will help you learn to communicate with your dog, and start creating an enjoyable and healthy relationship together.
