Positive reinforcement is a fantastic tool for teaching and encouraging desired behaviors in dogs. But here’s the truth—it’s not designed to stop unwanted behaviors.

Sure, we can discuss the concept of withholding a reward (negative punishment) as a way to discourage certain behaviors. And while this can be effective in some situations, it’s important to recognize one key challenge: we don’t control all the rewards a dog might seek.

Sometimes, the reward comes from the behavior itself—like the sheer enjoyment of digging, chasing, or jumping. So what do you do when withholding a reward isn’t an option, and the behavior is dangerous or simply undesirable?

Dogs never cease to amaze me during training. Last week while training with the police K9 teams, those dog had a huge change of behavior on odir through an air vent, from about 4-5 rooms away.
