Testimonial Tuesday: What a Great way to start the year off with this review that the Staff earned!

Tori Matthews- Mansfield, TX
5 Star

Ward's Dog Training did a phenomenal job with my dog, Merlot. Merlot did the puppy program at Wards and started the program at 3 months old. I cannot express how much this program helped not only Merlot, but myself on how to navigate training at home and our quality of life together. Merlot is a very high energy Australian Shepherd and he had problems with jumping, manners, leash pulling, and could not settle. Throughout the program, I could see improvement every time I dropped him off and picked him up. During the process, Justin Ward and his team not only trained Merlot, but they gave me all the tools I needed to be successful as his owner. During the program, I received many videos of his training sessions with explanations, photos, and updates along the way. Although it was hard to drop Merlot off at times, it got easier as I could see just how excited and happy he was once he saw the red barn.

Merlot is now 9 months old and he is able to walk on a leash without pulling, follow commands, stay at “place” for longer durations with distractions, and keep a down stay for longer durations even if I walk far distances away. Merlot understands “heel” and was able to be successful on starting his off leash training. Merlot is now able to go to public places and is confident in himself and relaxed around numerous distractions. Being able to take Merlot public places with me is such a big deal to me and I never thought it was possible before Wards.

Trainers Zoe and Maggie, were so helpful during the puppy program and I was able to have one on ones with both during the program. I learned so much from their knowledge and they answered all of my questions. They prioritized not only showing me his progress, but making sure I understood how to continue training at home.

The entire staff at Wards is phenomenal. Their level of care and commitment is unmatched. Every staff member that greeted me from drop off to pick up was kind and helpful. They treat your dog as if it was their own. I have peace of mind when Merlot is at Wards that all his needs are being met above and beyond. Although the puppy program has ended, Merlot will continue to do daycare, day trains, and boarding at Wards. I can’t recommend Ward's Dog Training enough, and it is the only place I will be using for years to come.

Remember no one is arguing the need for sterilization, it's the surgical technique that should be reevaluated. Hysterectomy and vasectomy achieve the same goal but leave important hormones intact according to science.

"The association between gonadectomy and timing of gonadectomy, and the risk of canine cranial cruciate ligament disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract
Objective - To determine if gonadectomy in dogs is associated with the risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CrCLD) and to quantify the magnitude of the association.

Study design - Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sample population - Comparative studies with gonadectomized and entire dogs, with CrCLD as an outcome measure.

Methods - A systematic search of the primary and gray literature was performed. The effect size of the outcome measure was defined as the OR and 95% CI. Subgroup analysis was performed with s*x, breed, and age at gonadectomy. A pooled OR (95% CI) was generated from meta-analysis of relevant studies. Certainty in the body of evidence was rated with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) framework.

Results - The literature search yielded 1398 results and 24 relevant studies were included for synthesis. Gonadectomized female (pooled OR = 2.293, 95% CI = 1.768–2.945) and male (pooled OR = 2.117, 95% CI = 1.665–2.691) dogs were both at increased odds of developing CrCLD in comparison with entire female and male dogs, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that gonadectomy at 1 year or less was consistently associated with an increase in odds of developing CrCLD in both s*xes. Overall certainty in the evidence was rated as moderate. All included studies were observational and no controlled trials were available.

Conclusion - In data with moderate certainty, gonadectomy is associated with increased odds of developing CrCLD in both s*xes, particularly in dogs gonadectomized at 1 year of age or less.

Clinical significance - This study provides an estimate of the true effect size of gonadectomy on the odds of developing CrCLD, which may be useful for clinical decision making surrounding gonadectomy and the timing of gonadectomy."

Dogs of all kind in!

Dogs generally pull about 60 per cent harder on a leash when wearing a padded harness compared with a collar, even when the equipment is marketed as “anti pull” – putting the people walking them at risk of injury.

Some dogs – especially smaller breeds – pull with a force more than twice their body weight on the collar, potentially damaging their throats, says Erin Perry at Southern Illinois University.

“It’s really very shocking,” she says. “The dogs are almost choking themselves on that collar repeatedly. But the harnesses in our study just didn’t inhibit pulling in any way, and that’s definitely a wake-up call – especially because of the risk to owners.”
