I LOVE this picture of Julia Child filming French Chef back in 1963. There are 5 people - FIVE! - sitting on the floor of the set, crammed behind her kitchen island, hidden from the camera's view. One of the five is holding at the ready a pie tin, which will undoubtedly be magically transported into her hand momentarily.

The scene reminds me of an interview that I saw with Cindy Crawford a long time ago. The interviewer had said something to the effect of, “Not everyone can wake up looking like Cindy Crawford,” and Cindy had responded, “Even I don't wake up looking like Cindy Crawford."

A few years ago I shared a post here in which I’d written, “A series of happy, shiny Facebook posts or a perfectly curated Instagram feed or Snapchat story or Pinterest board or whatever the heck other platform we choose to share only the best moments set in only the most flattering light will never represent the totality of a life. A part of one, yes. A real part. An honest part. But it's a highlight reel, not the whole movie. None of us, no matter how shiny or happy our photos or our stories, is living the one-dimensional life you see here.”

Heck, even Julia Child couldn’t cook like Julia Child. At least not alone. 😉

PORTRAITS OF A TOWN - VILLAGE ON HIGH. The City of Millville has commissioned us to do photos & very short stories on Millville Businesses. We will be doing 20 in the next few months. Of course the first one I photographed was an art related business, The Village on High, with a portrait of Maryann K***z, owner of An Octopus's Garden & Maryann Cannon, owner of the Village on High as well as La Bottega of Art. Much more to come. Photo by Bill Horin/ArtC

PORTRAIT OF A CITY - OK WATCH SHOP. Last week I photographed Craig Kawajiri at the OK Watch Shop as part of our series commissioned by the City of Millville. Craig made it clear that I would have to wait while he waited on customers before I could take his picture. It was over an hour before there was a break as Craig patiently dealt with customers, listened & shared stories with them & when possible, made minor repairs while they waited. He is fair & honest & a staple of Downtown Millville. Photo by Bill Horin/ArtC & Story by Sal Emma/ArtC

OK Watch Shop is the place for jewelry and watches on High Street. Owner Craig Kawajiri’s family started the business in 1957. Craig has been Millville’s go-to for both sales and service for three decades.
“The customers want somebody reliable. That’s me,” Craig says. Trust and reliability is key in the jewelry business and Craig has built a reputation for doing things right.
If it can tell time, Craig can probably fix it – and he won’t charge an arm and a leg. He also repairs jewelry – broken chains, clasps, ring sizing and the like. “I do a little bit of everything,” he says. He’s known for his fair prices, quick turnaround and enthusiasm for repairs. He also keeps a wide inventory of items for sale.
A lifelong resident of Cumberland County, Craig grew up in Bridgeton. He learned a lot on the job working for his family but he is also formally trained. He is a graduate of Bowman Technical
School, formerly located in Lancaster, Pa.

Copied from a friend of a friend. This is why I need help, and am not afraid to ask for it. And I def couldn’t run the shop without the Karen's, michelle, Shannon & Rob having my back at this point in time! My entire staff rocks!

The unfortunate truth of owning and running a business.
Running a business is really hard.
What they don’t tell you is that it can cause severe stress and anxiety, and drains you mentally to the point of depression in even the most laid-back people.
People will talk about you, compare you to others, use you, they will view you as a service and not a person anymore.
Friends and family will expect discounts and people will value you and your hard work less than a big chain store.
You have to worry about if you forget to email/message someone back, are they going to think it was on purpose? Did you disappoint them? Will they hold that against you? When in reality you just can’t get to everyone’s messages and emails.
Starting up and running a successful business puts incredible strain on personal lives and relationships, many of which fail because there is just often no work-life balance.
You need to be the director, the worker, the admin, the marketing team, the accountant, the cleaner..... All while being a puppy parent, a husband or a wife, family support, friend...
There’s a reason you don’t see many people succeed in small businesses after 5-10 years. If they are successful they are overwhelmed.
It takes a toll. It’s freaking exhausting. Especially the past couple of years when so much has been out of our control.
Here’s a small reminder that we are just normal people with hectic lives.
Be kind, be patient, support small businesses…….and hopefully more of us will stick around!
And know that 2022 prices are not 2023 prices.
I copied this from another small business owner that I support!
Please support small business!
