The number one cause of resistance when people train is confusion. They are asking the dog to do something he/she does not understand. Maybe a complex task or a broken line of communication or lacking an open mindset to look for direction.

The human mind looks at a task and says this is so easy. The dogs mind being extremely handicapped in problem solving abilities compared to the human looks at the task with confusion.

Breaking the task down into such basic steps even just the dog looking at what your asking them to do helps eliminate the chance of confusion. Self discipline of emotions and force seems the most difficult for humans. We just want to get things DONE.

When the human becomes frustrated due to lack of patience or the ability to teach then FORCE is applied to finish the task. At this point the decision making process went from the dog to the human. The result of this is resentment and resistance (fight or flight).

Properly reading a dog can take years to learn and some humans never truly grasp the why and needs of the dog. But being able to properly read a dog in a situation can turn months of training into seconds.

Reading dogs and self discipline will always be #1 over any technique. It’s a teachers greatest tool.

A great group of buddies enjoying a gorgeous day at Orapax with the Blue Kai crew.❤️🐕 They bagged almost all of their birds, just a few wiley quail escaped pheasants didn’t make the pic they’re definitely in the freezer! and best of all, this was a donation hunt.

Thank you to Orapax for supporting the Central VA Quail Forever chapter😃. The annual banquet will be Friday 2/9 at Oakdale in Ashland. Tons of excellent prizes, raffles and more!

BIRD Friday afternoon hunt was incredible 🤩 we were honored to guide a long time friend and client of the preserve, Alex along with his son, Will and Will’s best bud, Hayden.

We rarely use Lacy Blues in guided hunts but these guys were awesome at dropping birds for her and keeping up with her prey drive. After 30min, we slowed it down a bit with Kai and Super B then added Gunner towards the end to assist in clean up.

Thank you to everyone that came out to Orapax this week to celebrate friends, family and high flying feathers!🐕❤️

Black Friday is officially renamed BIRD Friday 😁

The Blue Kai pups had a morning hunt with an old friend and his family. Kai was happy to share the field with David’s dogs, Buck and Dahlia for a little bit so they could jump in the fun.

Gunner, Kai and Super B helped this great group of gentlemen with a gorgeous day in the field.

Family tradition of a Thanksgiving upland hunt. These guys took home a PILE of birds! They put out 40 quail and 4 pheasants but the Blue Kai pups said it’s the season for giving🤠🦃 so they gave their all and helped these guys get 47 quail, 6 pheasants and 2 chukar 🎉🐕❤️

The Blue Kai pups kicked off a busy holiday week with some of our old friends, John and John. We had beautiful weather, great flying birds and plenty of bonus birds!

Lacy Blues, Gunner, Kai and Super B all got the chance to show off their stuff and help these guys add more goodies to the Thanksgiving table.

Proud of the Blue Kai pups from their NAVHDA testing in Sept. Thank you to all of the judges and volunteers for putting on a great test despite the tropical storm!

Olivia and Faith are turning out to be everything we had hoped for in the Lacy Blues x Kai breeding. ❤️🐕

Super B WOULD have gotten a prize 1 but she refuses to swim and that’s an automatic failure.☹️ One judge was impressed with her range commenting that next time I run her he will have a horse to keep up😂

Gunner and I never put in the time to train for duck blind sequences so he didn’t understand what I wanted from him. Totally my fault as a handler and owner. I also used the short leash on heel portion which gave appearance he was pulling so lesson learned there. Next time I’ll bring his 8’ leather leash😂 He absolutely killed it on his blind duck search and duck drag though❤️
