Let’s talk puppy manners…
This is something I am very passionate about. I can’t emphasize how important it is to develop manners with puppies at an early age. I know it seems harmless for a puppy this small to mouth your hand or jump on you for attention. But in 4 short months these cuties are going to have tripled in size! If they don’t learn from the start that it’s not ok to bite & jump on you, they’re not going to stop just because they get bigger. It’s only going to hurt more!
Chasing your pants legs can be the start of a pups instinct to herd you, particularly in herding breeds. If you don’t want your Aussie chasing your kiddos and nipping at their heels, don’t let them do it from the start even when it seems harmless.
Any time you are giving a pup/dog affection or treats,you are reinforcing a behavior. What behaviors are you reinforcing; jumping, excessive energy, nervousness, or even fear? Puppies are are always learning whether your intentionally “training” them or not. Puppies/dogs want a strong and confident leader that makes them feel safe. They often mimic people like kids. If your excited, they are going get excited. If your nervous or if you think something is going to make them nervous, guess what? You just showed them that they should be scared.
Here at Oney Ranch, affection and treats require good behavior such as sitting politely or being brave. Are these guys gonna be pros before they go home, absolutely not. But, we want to do everything we possibly can to help prepare these pups for success. What behaviors will you be rewarding when these guys go home? Some food for thought…
