This Usher was entrusted to me mid last week. While at first glance, it didn’t appear too dirty or in demand of much rough out restoration, the underside of the leather told a different story. She was thirsty. After lots of time picking out sealant out of carvings, and ample thin layers of oils she was ready to go home. Just in time to beat the winter weather.

Top coats are often used on new saddles and wear off pretty quickly, however it likes to hide in tooling and helps collect dust.

It may seem just like a pile of leather, but it tells a story. The box strolled into my tack shop holding a pony harness. It brought with it memories of its owners, but also drudged up my own memories.

Several years ago, my childhood home was destroyed by fire. Along with the house was all of our most tack. Numerous saddles, spade bit collection, several harnesses, and so much other tack was all gone in a few short hours.

One of those harnesses looked a lot like the one in the box. Ours had a green surcingle pad. That particular harness belonged to a one-eyed Hackney pony by the name of Jack. Jack taught me a ton about life through the lens of pony attitude/sarcasm. The memories made me pause and appreciate all the keepers and buckles on the harness.

This lovely pony harness with a blue surcingle pad belong to a grandfather and has been passed down to the next generation. It may or may not see a pony back again, and that’s okay. The memories that it still hauls around is what is the most important.

Why You Should NEVER Use a Pressure Washer on Your Saddle 🚫

It may seem tempting to quickly blast away dirt with a pressure washer, but this can seriously damage your leather saddle! 💥

Here’s why:
1. Leather Damage: High-pressure water can strip natural oils from the leather, leading to dryness, cracking, and stiffness.

2. Water Infiltration: The force of the water can force moisture deep into the stitching, which can weaken the threads and cause the saddle to fall apart.

3. Unwanted Wear: Pressure washers can disrupt the texture of the leather, making it rough in spots it was never meant to be rough.

4. Warping Tree: Most saddle trees weren’t designed to get that wet. Too much water can cause saddle trees to warp or rawhide to stretch.

For proper care, always clean your saddle with a low water pressure, leather-friendly cleaner, and soft cloth. Trust the experts to maintain your gear the right way! 🧴✨
