Here’s a fun one! The owner noticed a bad smell while removing the bit and if you’ve ever smelled an abccess, you just know! Upon further inspection, the owner found drainage coming from under the horse’s jaw. They figured it might be a tooth problem, so that’s when I got the call. At first glance, nothing looked too out of the ordinary until I began poking around with my probe and found that the pulp chamber of the 309 was open. As you can tell from the pictures, there was a pinpoint opening on the surface of the tooth that allowed feed and bacteria to enter, causing the infection. Due to damage to the pulp chamber, as well as the infection, the tooth was extracted.

I extracted some massive wolf teeth out of a 5 year old mare! The wolf teeth are still such a mystery to the majority of people. Almost everyone knows they exist, but don’t know where or why they are there.

The wolf tooth is a remnant of a premolar that diminished throughout the evolution of the horse. It is said that 70% of horses have wolf teeth and unlike the canine, (which is often mistaken for a wolf tooth) they are not hormone driven.

They are often uncomfortable and cause issues in performance. As the horse ages, the root of the wolf tooth begins to dissipate. In the last photo, you can see the difference in the root size of wolf teeth that were extracted from various 2 year olds vs. the 5 year old.

If you haven’t already, be sure to deworm your horses! This is a bot fly larvae that had burrowed into this horse’s gums. These larvae, if left untreated, have the potential to cause stomach ulcers and other painful issues. It’s always best to address a problem before it becomes an issue!
