Journey into Horsemanship

Journey into Horsemanship My goal for you: Confidence. Foundation. Softness. Finesse. Affordable. Horsemanship. Journey into Horsemanship focuses on progress improvement, not perfection.

It's about developing a partnership with a horse, regardless if the horse is with you for a short while or long term. Hello. I'm Carlena. I hope to make every horse & rider better than the day before. This page was inspired by my experiences working with horses, along with training & competing on my own. It is a place to share horse training ideas, experiences, inspirations, support, and problems.

Having a deep passion for quality horsemanship, I have won numerous Championships & awards in obstacle based events the past 6 years. The fundamentals I teach are what I used in taking Merlin from a green horse to a Champion award-winning veteran. Currently in training for obstacle competitions & pleasure classes is my OTTB mare, Bacardi. I teach riders these same techniques, offering a solid foundation for competitions & a solid working horse. I grew up riding. My experiences are many ... team roping, barrel racing, goat tying, ranch sorting, Trail Trials, obstacle challenges, Cowboy Mounted Shooting, western horse shows, working ranch & brandings, wilderness packing, horse camping, dude ranch wrangler, plus dabbling with Cowboy Dressage. As a professional science teacher, I carry that enthusiasm & training out to the arena & trails. I put on Journey into Trail Trials clinics and Journey into Horsemanship weekly riding lessons. In addition to helping riders learn & progress, I work with client horses. I offer affordable private & group lessons, with patience & knowledge sprinkled through out.

β˜† Carl & Wichita #2 β˜†
Today was a review of stepovers & bridge; different location, logs/bridge, & set up.
Today built upon the lesson they had last week.
Today was a mentally easier day for Wichita.
Today, Wichita's confidence & trust in Carl was evident.

.Carl & Wichita.
6yo Wichita & Carl often lead a pack team in our California Sierra Nevada mtns. There are lots of down trees this time of year. Unfortunately, Wichita dislikes stepping over the fallen trees that landed across trails.
Today was log day. Using proper & successful training methods, Carl helped Wichita accomplish not only stepping across logs, but also riding over bridges. The exciting finale was walking across dirt-filled tires.
Carl & Wichita will make a fine team.

Common Beginner Rider Mistake #1
- Hands in the Air -
It is instinctual for us to use our hands and arms to balance us when we start to feel insecure. Beginner riders often end up with their hands way up in the air, sometimes at shoulder height. This leaves the reins much too long, and the rider then has minimal control of the horse.
** Keep your hands low, below the top of the horn.**

KAYLA & LACY
Lacy is a 5yo mare who belongs, in part, to Kayla.
Lacy needs to learn she is not the boss. 😳 Today, Day 1, was all about groundwork; leading, cleaning feet, & lunging, + a few odds & ends.
Luckily, we also survived a mini-tornado or gigantic dust devil. We're thankful the chattering loose metal roof panels stayed put!
Kayla is pictured refining her lunging method by practicing better body placement. She also learned that a lunge whip is not always necessary.
Kayla stated Lacy has never been as calm as she was today. Well, the mini-tornado did make all 3 of us run!
Good job, Kayla.

Today ... a 3.5 year long decision was revisited......
There's a lot of pride, and a bit of ego, to be the only rider on a horse you start under saddle. I started Levi @ 2.5 yo. Being his only rider, I hold his good, bad, & ugly riding in my hands.
Today, I tossed my ego aside.
Today, I asked Lydia to ride my 6yo gelding.
Today, for the first time, I was able to watch Levi move & to see what I need to work on.
Today, my pride blossomed.

Should Your Equine Exercise on an Empty Stomach? Post published:May 30, 2019 Humans are told never to swim immediately after eating a heavy meal to avoid stomach cramps. This is my 6yo private horse, Nu Guns Armour, aka Levi.
Last wknd, we rode in a Trail obstacle event. There were several creek crossing 'obstacles'. Saturday's 8 mile ride had 10 obstacles. There were 8 obstacles along Sunday's 6 mile ride.
The young boy in the pic had trouble convincing his mare to leave her horse buddy, so she could cross the creek. Since I had already crossed, the judge asked me to go get the young rider.
I'm a firm believer that all horses should know how to pony & be ponied.

Courtney's Journey...
Courney has come a long way learning to ride. Today, I decided it was time to give her riding a purpose.
Well done, Courtney.
