The entire point of being involved in an animal rescue is to help an animal when it’s in need. Sometimes you get the perfectly healthy animals, but majority of the time they are injured or sick. Technically you do get to pick and choose what you want to take, however a reputable rehabber or rescue does not do that. Our mission is to SAVE animal life. That is the whole point. Sick or perfectly healthy.

The case of this fawn… He/she (I haven’t checked yet) was hit by a car this morning. It is injured but most definitely worth saving. We always try! No matter what because you won’t know unless you try.

Euthanasia is always the very last resort. Another rehabber whom we have no association with advised those who had him/her in their care to take it back to where it was found, and have someone shoot it to put it down. Decent rehabbers do not give out that kind of advice, especially when they haven’t even seen the animal in question yet. You don’t make that kind of call from a description…..

He/she is safe, on medication, and on an IV drip for hydration. All I can think about is how many deer fawn this individual is responsible for leaving to die? One thing is for sure, not all rehabbers are like that, most especially Misfit Farms!

This young red fox (brought in from Goose Creek I believe) arrived with a bad case of mange. He is eating quite well, and his fur is coming back in beautifully! It won’t be long and he will be going outside to prerelease❤️.

This little coon…..Behaves as if he didn’t eat yesterday 😂. It won’t be long before he begins showing signs of wilding up. Such a bitter sweet moment as you miss the sweet baby who wants to be held and nurtured by you, to witnessing his natural instinct taking over. One day you will be able to touch him, then the next you won’t be able to reach in without gloves on. But until then, I will love him for as long as he will let me.

Trying to get this feed situated but this lady was impatient 😂😂.

MASSIVE THANK YOU to everyone who sent a donation to Misfit Farms! The Amazon Guy may feel other wise, but we are internally thankful for your support!! We have such an amazing community and it means so much that we can count on our community for help during such a rough, and exhausting time. In the 30 years that Gary has called Misfit Farms home, he has experienced many storms both tropical as well as hurricanes and in all of those years, he never experienced flooding to the extent that he did during this storm. The paddocks were under water, the horses and cows were up to their bellies. Thankfully Gary had a large mound of dirt in the paddocks that he intended to spread out so the goats had enough high ground to escape the rising water. He lost the feed, his hay, and there is water damage to the buildings but we know that it could have been so much worse. As frustrating as it is at the moment, we know that others got it worse. We know that some were forced to fully evacuate their homes and there are those who couldn’t return to their homes due to the amount of water that made its way in. Some even lost their homes to fire. We know that it could have been so much worse.

Since the cold is on its way…. Eventually….. I am creating new hoodies! I have an obsession with hoodies and I think this one will be my all time favourite! They are not available yet for purchase but I have to at least show them off❤️.
These are a touch different that the usual shirts we post. These will have to be purchased through us and we will be responsible for getting them to you.

Which do your prefer? Zip up hoodies such as what I have featured here or the pull overs??

Cleaning and feeding! That is what today consisted of ❤️ Lots of mud but thankfully everything is drying out. At least the ducks and geese are happy lol. Thank you everyone for all of your help! We had several drop by with donations and we can’t express our gratitude enough! To have to rebuild everything we had stocked up on is one thing but it leaves a sickening feeling in your stomach to have to throw out sooo much feed. All of the hay is ruined aside from the few bales we threw out into the feeding troughs…….But we know that it could have been soooo much worse so with that being said, we will count our blessings.

Like many others around the Low Country, Misfit Farms has taken a hit due to flooding! We have lost all of our stored feed. From our domestic feed (cats, and dogs) to our live stock and that includes the stored hay. In the 30+ that Gary has called Misfit Farms home, he has never experienced flooding to this extent. The land, and the buildings that reside on the property went under water. All intakes are fine! However their food is gone. Please help if you can!

LOOK WHO IS GROWING AND GROWING! He is feeding incredibly well, and the face of healthiness ❤️ When you’re involved in animal rescue, you don’t always end with success stories but in the case of this guy, he will be a success story. These little ones absolutely warm my heart. To have them come in as newborns, watch as their eyes open, as they begin to grow and evolve into their own animal, then in the end to be released back into the wild is such an amazing experience. It means we did our job as a rehabber. We can’t save them all but for that one, we helped to ensure a life for.

Can we talk about bats for a moment??

We have been experiencing so many bat calls and the number one question is “If I help it will I catch rabies? Is there a possibility that it’s rabid? Will it attack me and drink my blood?”

Unless you’re a delicious, juicy bug then you have absolutely no worries in regards to your blood being consumed…. Actually, if I’m to be honest, you have no worries at all of being attacked by a bat. It’s just not their nature. Bats, along with foxes, coyotes, and raccoons just to name a few are amongst the vectored species meaning they can contract and have been well known to carry the rabies virus. But keep in mind that all mammals con contract rabies (excluding Oppossums) including your pet dogs, cats and even human beings.

Rabies is transmitted through blood or saliva which usually takes place via a bite but that’s not always the case. Contaminated saliva can transmit the virus without entering a bite wound. It can be transmitted through the eyes, nose, mouth, or through open sores/wounds on the body. It has to be through saliva or blood. Thus is why you should ALWAYS wear gloves when handling any vector species. Rabid animals have symptoms that we look for. It’s not always the foaming of the mouth. It’s glassy/dazed eyes, unusual, aggressive behavior, or unusual behavior to begin with. A lot of times, rabid animals give the illusion of “being friendly.” I’ve seen this in raccoons. But the one I really look for is the “fear of water.” Rabid animals including bats cannot drink water. They can eat but they cannot drink. There are other signs to look for as well. Those are just to name a few.

Now back to the bats. There are 14 known species in South Carolina. Bats are not viscous, little monsters, but incredibly beneficial to our ecosystem. They do not attack people. These creatures are 3 inch’s long body width wise, and sometimes smaller and are as the saying goes blind as a bat. They navigate through echo location. That is how they detect their food sources, and wherever it is that they are flying to.Bats can not simply fly at a whim. They actually have to fall in order to fly so when a bat is found on the ground……It’s usually a death sentence. A bat found on the ground always means a bat in need of help. Sometimes it means they are sick, (not always rabies. Most cases that I’ve come across for sick bats are due to poison or wing/bone injury) or it just means it’s grounded and wasn’t able to get to a high vantage point to get back into their air.

Crevice bats (one of my favourites is the Evening bat) is the one you find roosting behind shutters, or in attics. Hence the name crevice bats. They do find their way into homes at times but they are not a threat. They have no intention of harming you. They got in and they simply cannot get out. When I get calls from panicked finders who want to know if it’s going to kill them…..I always respond with “they are wondering the same about you.” That response typically doesn’t make me many friends but please keep that in mind. They panic just as you do and their only thought is to get away. They are blind. So if they are able to fly, they are usually flying into EVERYTHING until they find themselves on the floor. A sturdy pair of gloves and a box with a lid always does the trick. Problem solved. This was a situation with one of this mornings phone calls. Big thanks to the finder for calling me instead of choosing to kill. The bat in question is not the bat featured in this image. It just fits the description ❤️❤️

Hey, hey! I want to apologize for going dormant. My family (not Gary by the way) is suffering the unexpected loss of a very close loved one and it has been an incredibly hard, and trying week for me. This guy has kept me going with his constant need to
eat 🙄. Even when he’s full, he’s still acts like he’s starving 😂. He’s fat, and healthy. So he most definitely isn’t suffering from hunger lol just a growing boy! I am so happy with his progress! He is appears to be twice the size that he was when he first came into rescue. Eyes and ears still closed and barely mobile. Now, if given the golden opportunity is EVERYWHERE!

Please keep in mind that raccoons, as adorable as they appear as babies, are wild animals with a wild animal mentality. They do not make for good pets. Always keep in mind that these cute little fluffs are a vector species (rabies for those of you who unaware as to what that means), can carry parvo, as well as distemper all of which can be passed to your personal pets both cats and dogs.

My kick boxing blocks came in handy today 😂😂😂. But seriously, this deer fawn gave me a whooping and left tattoos lol. Even as babies they are STRONG and those back legs pack a punch. Thanks to an awesome neighbour, we got her in safe and squared away❤️.

Please keep in mind that deer fawn or wild animals in general to NOT make for good pets. This little fawn was confiscated from someone who had every intention of keeping her as a pet. Without a doubt, she has been formula fed the wrong milk replacement and her body is showing all the signs. Thank you animal control and DNR for getting her out of that situation.

This little baby buzzard was found while clearing land. Huge thank you to the finders for saving him and bringing him to us for rehabilitation. We do not rehabilitate birds of prey or wild birds in general so this adorable little monstrosity will be going to the appropriate rehabber tomorrow! In the mean time he is safe with us!

🥳🥳 🥳 CHECK OUT THIS AMAZING UPDATE!

A few days ago this little buck (approximately 2 weeks of age) came to us in desperate need of rescue. We have a suspicion as to what lead to these injuries but we will honestly never know the true cause. I for one did not expect him to survive that first night but here he is days later proving me wrong. What a fighter! He is having to be tube fed until he can suckle on his own and is being administered antibiotics. While he is looking much, much better, he is nowhere near out of the clear. But what an improvement!

Tonight has been busy. Two fawns arrived, one in much better condition than the other. We suspect possible snake bite (rattle snake?) to the snout of this young buck. Medical attention has been administered now we pray as hard as we can that it’s not too late.

HEY, HEY!

🚨🚨🚨 We have new shirts!!! 🚨🚨🚨

I’ve been working hard to create the right shirt that really voices what Misfit Farms stands for.
Our motto is “No Animal Left Behind.” For a reason as we open our doors to EVERYTHING that is in need of rescue or a home. So far this year we have adopted out many kittens, puppies, rabbits, and adult cats, and dogs.
We have released possums, raccoons, and MANY wild rabbits back into the wild. Just to name a few. As always we continue to take in and shelter many animals in need of rescue, and each shirt purchased wil go towards the food, and care of all the animals currently in rehab as well as those who will arrive in the future.

06/06/2024

10 rabbit kits came in all at once. And so far one has already passed. This is the cause of feeding the wrong formula. Goats/Kid milk is not a formula supplement that we use on our wildlife. They can not digest it. Kitten formula can keep some wildlife alive but in the end it is deadly. It is a hit or miss with it usually being a miss. And if it does manage to keep anything alive, there is always usually some developing issue that takes place later. Please remember that:

🚨Goats/kid milk is dangerous to wildlife
🚨Kitten Formula is dangerous to wildlife
🚨Cows milk is dangerous to wildlife
🚨Human breast milk is dangerous to wildlife
🚨Human baby formula is dangerous to wildlife

Please get in touch with a trained wildlife rehabber if you find an infant animal in need of help. We are your best bet to the correct information.
