Never ending PT for his shoulder as well as his limb. It’s daily and all through out the day. Lots of binding, strapping, and trying to support both the shoulder, and limb without causing any fusions. Easier said than done. He is putting weight on his leg and trying to use it however we are fighting the rotation of his shoulder and it’s giving us hell. I have a feeling that we will be re splinting that leg straight again and we will go from there. New braces and special shoes are on the way ❤️❤️

The first thing we do in the morning is feed Banks his bottle then we take him outside to venture around the yard. He wears slip resistant booties on his front legs to help his right hoof get some traction when he’s walking. We also bought a knuckling brace that he’s wearing on and off through out the day. His shoulder is still rotated and as hard as I’m trying, it’s not going back in place as we’d hoped BUT Banks can walk! He can even run❤️. There are times where he wants to hold his leg behind him in which I quickly correct. We are still pushing PT, especially in the mornings as that tendon wants to tighten up after a night of sleeping. He is standing up on his own, and relieving himself from a standing position. We have a long way to go but man has he already come so far!

Vet visit went well! We are cast free ❤️. Another visit in two weeks to check his progress but in the mean time just lots of continued physical therapy.

We’ve had a few messages asking for the best method to donate towards Bank’s rehabilitation efforts. I have posted the Misfit Farm’s PayPal link below. We are always appreciative of any donation that we receive! This helps us to be able to treat animals like Banks and thanks to the support, we are able to see that Banks gets treated by the best ❤️.

Look who got released!!!! And when I say released, we didn’t have a say so in it 😂😂

I love a good success story and when it comes to HBC deer (hit by car) it’s always 50/50. They either make it or they don’t. This guy proved me wrong! When I first seen him I told Gary that I seriously doubted he would survive the night. Not only did he survive that first night, he continued to progress. He got stronger, more alert, then he self released. It happened so fast that we didn’t even get to snap a picture. All I can say is he better stay away from the roads 😂😂.

🦋🦋 STORY TIME 🦋🦋

I don’t think Gary has posted about Banks yet. So just incase he hasn’t, I’m going to share his story with you today!

Banks was born Feb 3rd as a triplet in the Florence area. He was born with his right front leg contracted. He arrived to Misfit Farms on Feb 22nd for help with that front leg. This is not the first Goat kid to arrive with a contracted tendon. Remember Mistle Toe??

Mistle Toe was another goat kid who was born as a triplet however Mistle Toes condition was much worse, and her chance of survival were slim from the get go. Today I took Banks to the vet and it was confirmed that it wasn’t only his lower leg that was the problem, it was also his shoulder as well as his upper leg. Because of how he would position himself, his right shoulder began to rotate outwards which began to twist his leg. If that makes sense. BUT there was hope!

I was given 3 options.

1) I could take him to one of two vet schools for a specific surgeon to look at him. One school was in NC, the other in Virginia.

2). I could allow them to operate right there in Kingstree and allow them to try their best.

3) They could take him back, place him under and attempt to strengthen out that leg. If they could get it to straighten without causing further damage (breaking it) then they would splint it and we would go from there.

So, as I was already there, I decided to go with option three. AND IT WAS A SUCCESS!! In the mean time I have to work that shoulder several times a day, every single day.

Yall say a prayer for Banks. He needs all the help that he can get ❤️❤️

BEFORE & AFTER!

This hit by car buck came to us (first image on the left) last night. He was found off of College Park Rd, Completely dazed, and out of it. Head trauma is evident but no signs of broken legs, or abdominal injury. This morning after a night of pushing fluids, we came out and found him standing up and full of questions. He’s nowhere near out of the woods but I have hope!

We see deer hit on the side of the road all the time but this was a rough one for me this morning as I was driving the back roads through the woods heading to an appointment this morning. I found this deer curled up on the side of the road so of course I stopped. Alive with head trauma and bleeding into its lungs. We’ve had too many instances in the past with a deer Rehabber who instructs finders to send a picture of the animal then they are told to just leave it to die…… You can’t always tell by a photo how bad an animal’s condition is.

You have to see it in person. And this deer is the perfect example of that. I did a small examination of this animal then decided that the best course of action was to have it dispatched by DNR. We can’t save them all but we can ensure that they don’t suffer longer than they have to.

🖤🖤 Baby season has begun! 🖤🖤

Some may wonder where we get these babies. If we find them ect? We rarely find the rescues that make their way to us. They come from those in the community who just happen to find them. It’s a natural instinct to want to nurture, to want to feed. Unfortunately, the latter is often times fatal.

🛑 PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE WILDLIFE! 🛑

Squirrels, wild bunnies, possums, raccoons, and deer fawn can NOT have just any kind of formula.

❌ KITTEN FORMULA

❌ PUPPY FORMULA

❌ HUMAN BABY FORMULA

❌ COWS MILK

❌ GOATS MILK

If you find an orphaned wild animal, the best thing to do that helps US out immensely is keeping that animal warm. Below are some ways to make that happen

❤️ Heating pad,

❤️ Warmed water bottle

❤️ Heated rice sock

❤️ Skin to skin ( I will sometimes carry newborns inside my shirt against my skin)

We NEVER out right formula feed our wild life (or any life that comes into rescue ). There are certain steps we have to take before we get to that point. We have to evaluate for injury, hypothermia and hyperthermia, (body temperature has to be where it’s supposed to be before giving anything.) then we work on hydration ((as well as antibiotics if the situation calls for it)) which Is incredibly imperative for survival for any living being. Infant wildlife can be adorable as babiess and they can and will bond with their care giver but no matter how much love you show that animal, the wild always shows itself and natural instinct always comes out. WILD ANIMALS DO NOT MAKE FOR GOOD PETS.

We could always use donations during baby season. This is our busiest season in rescue and it carries on for months. Below is our wish list for the infant animals that come into our care . Both wildlife as well as domestic . If you would like to send a donation just click the link below !!!

👋 👋 Hey, Hey! 👋👋

Baby season is merely weeks away, for some it’s here NOW. We haven’t gotten a call yet for infant wildlife but it’s coming! (Fawns are usually the first call for us). We just don’t take in wildlife, we take in all forms of babies including farm life, domestic, and reptilian. Babies are babies!

Of course we are stocking up on our own but we could always use some help from our community. I put together a “Baby shower” wish list for anyone who would like to donate to the babies that will soon fill our laps! Everything on this list is strictly for the babies and are much needed to the few rehabbers who volunteer at Misfit Farms. Also let me add, that we don’t just taken in the babies. We also take in pregnant mothers, and mothers WITH their babies if we can keep them all together so there are a few things on their for expectant, and nursing mothers.

🌟 Now fun fact about Possums 🌟

Did you know that the North American Opossum has no suckling reflex therefore they are unable to drink from a bottle. Small babies have to be tube fed when in captivity. The one pictured is what we call a lapper meaning he can lap his formula from a shallow dish.

Please keep in mind that wild animals, no matter how adorable they are as babies do not make good pets!
