“Horses don't have a gallbladder. Because of this, horses' livers only secrete bile acids, salts, and buffers when stimulated by consumption of food. Horses with an empty stomach for a prolonged period of time are more prone to ulcers because the stomach continually releases stomach acid, regardless of whether or not food is consumed. The buffering agents which neutralize this acid are only released when food is consumed. Do not let your horse go more than 6 hours without eating. Knowing your horse's weight is an important factor in developing a feed program. Do you know how to estimate your horse's body weight without a scale? ⚖️

While a scale is most accurate, it is not always most practical. Therefore, several systems have been established to help estimate body weight. The most convenient and inexpensive option is a weight tape, which estimates body weight based on circumference of the heart girth, however this is the most inaccurate method.

A 2002 study by Ellis and Hollands evaluated the accuracy of four weight tapes on 2,000 horses including 112 different breed types and found significant differences among the tapes.

A more preferred method for estimating body weight is the use of calculations which take into account both heart girth and length of the horse as shown below:

I had a moment of enlightenment this morning. ✨️

I've been feeling l overwhelmed, over extended, and guilty for not meeting the expectations of others. This morning, I opened an old book and found a bookmark that took me back, well over a decade, to 25 year old me. All of the negative lifted when I suddenly realized how 25 year old me would have done anything to be in my current shoes.

I have not released a new podcast episode in over 5 weeks.... but 25 yr old me would be amazed that I have a podcast with loyal listeners numbered by the thousands.

I'm disappointed about having to miss more of my daughter's games to travel for work. But 25 year old me would be amazed that: #1 someone is paying to fly me to Florida in the dead of winter, and #2 I'm a key presenter at an international conference.

I'm overwhelmed with preparing and giving 6 new presentations within a 3 week span. But 25 year old me would be amazed that I am lecturing to veterinarians and other equine professionals for CE credits.

I'm feeling over extended in the number of requests I get for consultations and support. But 25 year old me would be in awe that today alone, I consulted for 3 veterinarians and one of the most storied QH breeding/racing programs in the nation.

I feel guilty for how little time I have available to put towards my own horses. But 25 year old me would be amazed at the horse flesh in my barn and excited about the love for horses I'm cultivating in my daughter.

I still have a lot on my plate, but the load is feeling lighter. 25 year old me would be pretty proud of where I am in this very moment!

My advice if you've made it this far:
Keep charging forward, but don't forget to stop and look back every once in a while to remember how far you've come.
