We were able to get 7 appointments scheduled for canine spay/neuters at Small Miracles Rescue's new clinic in Ellicot City!
Can you please donate to help get these kids fixed and out of their foster homes? They have been waiting and would love to finally have their own families!!

Each pet is $180.00, plus $15.00 for a rabies vaccine and $15.00 for a combo vaccine.
So, $210.00 x 7 = $1,470.00.

Please help if you can and please share!

Love,
Banjo, Bella, Turtle, Lyla, Dewey, Daisy, and Jeffy!!

Do you know what's not fun? Using precious time driving to three different stores looking for sales to find the best pet food prices because money is so tight. Then, splitting the total at TSC between three different bank cards, my $10.00 rewards money, and using my two dollar bill collection to pay for said purchase. And, knowing that after all of that, it's only enough to get us thru for a couple of days. (Except for the canned cat food. We combined that with what we had on hand, but that's gone today.)

Rest assured, no one is going hungry or without on my watch, but I shouldn't have to keep living paycheck to paycheck, sacrificing my personal money, or paying my bills late, to keep us afloat. It's not fair.

I know that it's tough out there for all rescues right now. I think our situation makes it tougher because we are a multi-species rescue, and we have so many special needs animals here that require specific accommodations, diets, bedding, medications, etc.
Examples: We have two paralyzed dogs that require multiple, frequent, reusable pad changes to keep them dry. Those pads have to be washed daily. They need powders and creams to treat and prevent pressure sores. We have a canine hardship foster who has a rare disease called central diabetes insipidus. His meds alone cost us $90.00 per month.

Is there anyone out there who can volunteer? Who can help write grants for us? Fundraise? Fix our website issue?

Rescue work is hard enough without this never ending financial stress. Please donate!

When we pulled Audrey, her body score was a 1/9! She weighed only 22 lbs. (her intake weight at BCAS was only 17 lbs and she was terribly weak). She had a cough and was snotty, and she was gimpy. Looking at her Freedom Ride photos, it's hard to imagine her 5 pounds thinner! (Her first foster mom, an ACO officer, did a great job caring for her, and I believe willed her to live!) Because she was so starved, she had to be put on a refeeding plan. It is so hard to not let these cases eat as much as they want, but a strict refeeding schedule is crucial to avoid damaging their organs. You really have to be strong!

Testing during a visit with her new Foster-to-Adopt mom's vet showed that her lungs were clear, but she was started on antibiotics to be safe. (That was a good call, because the very next night she was very lethargic, uninterested in her food (!), and her temp spiked to 104.9°.) Radiographs of her shoulder confirmed that it wasn't dislocated, but that she'd previously broken her humerus bone up high and that it had healed very roughly. As she grows and develops more muscle to support it, we are hoping that she can keep her leg. Her toes sometimes knuckle under, so we'll see.

Audrey is so kind and gentle, and just the sweetest girl! She's settled in nicely and really started to come out of her shell! Her mom and dad are doing a great job with her potty training and nursing her back to health. She's had another vet visit last Wednesday, and her weight has climbed to 30.6lbs! She needs about 20-25 lbs more to be at her ideal weight. All of her pneumonia symptoms have resolved as well.

Please donate so that we can continue to help dogs like Audrey! She's had such a rough time of it in her short 10 months of life, and she's so deserving of a Happily Ever After. Your generous donations make that happen!

Two weeks ago, we took in a canary that was thrown outside to fend for itself. It wasn't a stray - the woman who drove it to us was on her deck outside, and heard her neighbor's talking about letting their pet canary loose. A few hours later, she found it outside and made a post to a local Lost and Found page asking for guidance. We offered to help and she and her husband drove 45 minutes after work to bring it to us so it would be safe and cared for.

Based on her body shape and coloring, we figured she was a girl and named her Rae.
We gathered supplies and put her in a cage in a bright, quiet room by herself until she got used to it here. She was a friendly little thing and seemed quite happy. She had a great appetite and was chirping and active.

When I uncovered her on the morning of her 4th day here, she was really puffed up and breathing very rapidly. I immediately contacted my friend, Marnie, who does avian rescue and sent her a video, then went downstairs to mix up some meds and get her supportive care. She was as stumped as I was because of the severity and sudden onset of her symptoms. Plus, the lack of other upper respiratory symptoms was confusing.

Afterwards, I went upstairs to examine her more closely and give her meds. She was dead on the floor of the cage. I was a sobbing mess! None of this made sense! I took her out and told her how sorry I was while I examined her. I found an engorged tick on her face. I called my friend back, and she said that she now understood her symptoms. I was floored and googled, "Can a single tick kill a canary?". Indeed, it can. And, sadly, it did. They can suffer from fatal blood loss and the neurotoxins that ticks release constrict their lungs and can cause heart failure.
I guess in the short time that she'd been outside after those * #$%@!×!! people threw her out, she'd picked up a tick. It wasn't engorged enough to see under her feathers until it was too late. We had no idea.

This was so heartbreaking and preventable... Why didn't they just turn her into a shelter or rescue or try to find her a new home?! Domesticated birds cannot survive if set free! This was a senseless death! Do better, people!!

We tried.

What's better than a perfect adopter? A perfect REPEAT adopter! (Not you this time, Mike and Denise. But, anytime you'd like to come back...)

Ivy was adopted this week, and she joins her brother, Umi, who was adopted last year. Their adopter said that they are racing around and having a ball together!

Thank you, Barb, for your support and for getting these kids reunited!

Lionel (Moonpie) and Jenny left this week to go to their new home. They showed up here as strays, completely feral, and had to be trapped. We had little hope that they would tame down, hence Lionel's clipped ear. Luckily, it was so cold last winter that we brought them inside from the barn. They have turned into two of the sweetest cats we've ever had! They are really bonded, so we are so happy that they were place together! Thank you, Megan, for giving these kids a great home!

After nearly two months of hospitalizations, rehab, and hard work, Mr. James has been reunited with his best girl, Icy Marie!! She is such a sweetie and it was our pleasure to foster her until they could be together again!

Donations and fosters are always needed to keep our Hardship Program going. There are so many more people and pets that need our help!

These two epitomize why we have that program in place. A minimal amount of effort on our part and they were both spared great heartache.

Our boy, Duke, isn't doing so well. His mast cell tumors are in his spine and they have affected his ability to use his rear legs. It's heartbreaking, because he has so much heart - he REALLY wants to go, go, go!
Since the weather is cooling down, he's been spending time on our big covered porch for a few hours during the day, on his comfy dog bed. He loves being out there, but we have to keep him in a leash. He gets tangled, so it's not ideal.
We need two of these expandable safety gates (bar on top) to put up to keep him safe while he's out there. Can any of our supporters order them?

Duke LOVES car rides! He is a perfect co-pilot and very well mannered. Hodgepodge friend, Heather, came by and took Duke out for a day of fun a couple of weeks ago. They had Pup Cups, cheeseburgers, and snuggles on the sofa! He had the best day! (Thank you, Heather!) If anyone would like to make his day again, let us know!

Also, as long as we are asking, Duke wanted you to know that we are in need of Purina One dry AND canned food, plus Pill Pockets. (And, canned cat food.) Please help if you can.

We've sure been busy this summer! As the pace slows for most folks and that means vacations, relaxing, and more family time, for us it means more work: more surrenders, more time, more kittens and puppies born, more fundraising efforts. And, less adoptions, less volunteers, less fosters available, and less donations.

Unfortunately, we can't put these kids on a shelf or in a closet until things turn around. They still need to be fed, medicated, vetted, cleaned, and cared for 24/7. It's a huge responsibility, and again, we are willing to put in the work. We're still giving it all we've got! But, we need your help!

We really need financial donations! A nearby store in Pa. has had great sales on pet food. Another store has a great sale on paper towels and laundry detergent.
Both store's sale prices were far cheaper than our friends at Am*zon. But, neither offer online shopping.

We really need canned cat food, canned dog food, dry cat food, and pill pockets.

Please donate and please share!

Putting out another plea for food and monetary donations. It's been nearly a month since the original post, and we even paid to boost it during that time. Only 6 people have donated so far. It's incredibly discouraging! Adoptions are at an all time low, as are donations. We realize that everyone is excited and making plans for summer, vacationing, having fun, and probably not giving a whole lot of thought to rescue's right now. But, we are still here, still struggling, and still in need. In order to care for the animals already here and continue our mission, we need your support. We'll keep putting in the hard work, we just need financial support. Please donate and please share.

Can anyone donate pet food? Our Amazon Wish List is below. Or, if anyone donates money, we can look for clearance sales at local pet stores, TSC, etc., and really stock up.

If we could get support with regular weekly or monthly sponsors/deliveries, that would take a huge load off! So much of our income (both rescue and personal) goes towards pet food, and it would free that up to go towards other expenses like spays, neuters, vet bills, flea
/tick meds, repairs, grooming, etc.
