My first harvest from my indoor herb garden started on January 8th! 🪴 I am in love with this Lemon Basil! 🍋 I’m thinking it may be warm enough now to move the cilantro outside for spring, too!

Finally have the strawberries planted out in the milk crate strawberry towers! 🍓 Varieties are Sweet Charlie (June-bearing) and Seascape (Ever-bearing) that I started from bare root about a month ago. Sweet Charlie did notably better than the Seascape. More than half of the Seascape bare roots failed to grow, so I may be on the lookout for more to fill out their tower. 🌱 Let me know if you know a good place to get some bare root seascape strawberries!

My beautiful lettuce babies 🥰
These varieties were chosen for this year’s spring/summer garden for their heat tolerance and resistance to bolting, important qualities for my climate in North Carolina Zone 7B. I also chose romaine, leaf, and bibb-type lettuces to add a variety of textures and colors to our salad bowls! 🥗
👇Variety Info:👇

🥬Cimmaron Red Romaine🥬
Heirloom ~ 60-70 days
Beautiful heads with deep red tips that fade to bright-green. Virtually impervious to bolting.

🥬Parris Island Romaine🥬
Heirloom ~ 21-68 days
Crunchy, sweet leaves and a buttery-green heart. Vigorous growth! Named after Parris Island, South Carolina and beloved by growers of the eastern seaboard. Moderate bolt resistance.

🥬Red Salad Bowl Leaf Lettuce🥬
Heirloom ~ 50 days
Garnet colored lobe leaf lettuce that is tasty AND ornamental! Slow to bolt, does well in warmer weather

🥬Slow-Bolt Leaf Lettuce🥬
~ 48 days
Bright-green ruffled leaves with great heat tolerance. Excellent choice for southern gardens!

🥬Merveille 4 Seasons Bibb Lettuce🥬
Heirloom ~ 70-80 days
Marvelous red-tipped French heirloom that is a true wonder! Holds it’s flavor in the heat and can be grown year round in most areas.

🥬Buttercrunch Bibb Lettuce🥬
Heirloom ~ 55 days
Reliable, dark-green leaves in compact heads. Holds well under heat and stress, good bolt resistance.

Valentine’s taters! 💘🥔 a.k.a. How I chit/green sprout my potatoes! I place them eye-side up in a semi-bright area and wait… a few days before planting (in about 4 weeks) I will cut some of the bigger taters to maximize the number of potato plants.

That face when you get two sacks of old taters in the mail! 😂 But for real, I’m so excited to be trying out these seed potatoes. 🥔 I’ve always just grown from organic grocery store potatoes… which works! But you don’t know the variety, and I want to start saving my homegrown potatoes to have my own seed potatoes. 😁 So I went ahead and invested in ‘Red Norland’ and ‘Yukon Gold’. Started the chitting process today! 🌱

Today seems like a good day to transplant some onion starts! 🧅 These little guys have kinda been through the ringer since they were started in November. My husband forgot to water them when I went away for the weekend a few weeks ago, and then I left them outside during a freeze last week. 😬 they are still kicking though, so we will see how they do this season! 🌱

Probably going to be making a video about some of the varieties I’m most excited about later this week, and I will be sure to share with y’all. Have you finished your 2023 garden plans yet?

I’m lucky to have an abundance of wild onions growing on my property! 🧅(technically, this is wild garlic - Allium vineale) I love using it like green onion, making herb butter with it, and sautéing the small bulbs. 😋 Plus, it grows all winter so I have something fresh and green when the backyard garden isn’t producing as much! Have you ever tried foraging for wild onions? How do you like use wild onions in the kitchen?
*before eating any wild plants, make sure to properly identify! Use caution, and be 100% sure you know what the plant is!

Things are finally starting to get warmer after the (unusually cold) cold snap we had. 🥶 After assessing the damage, not much made it. Even the garlic got knocked back a bit! 🧄 I think it may be perking back up, though. These were planted in November 1st, and I’m very hopeful for a beautiful harvest in spring!
