Fractured Teeth in Pets

Pets can crack or break a tooth more easily than you might think, and it’s something we see often during dental exams.

How It Happens
- Chewing hard items (antlers, bones, rocks, hard plastic toys, etc)
- Trauma or accidents
- Biting metal objects like crate bars, fences, etc.
Why It Matters
A fractured tooth can:

- Be very painful

- Lead to infection or abscessesCause swelling, bad breath, or trouble chewing

- Affect appetite and overall comfort

Pets hide dental pain well, so many owners don’t notice a problem right away.

How We Treat It
Treatment depends on how deep the fracture is:

- Minor chips → smooth/seal and monitor

- Deep fractures with pulp exposure →

✔️ Extraction (most common)

✔️ Root canal (done by a veterinary dentist)

These teeth cannot heal on their own, so treatment is important.

Signs to Watch For
- Visible chip or crack
- Chewing on one side
- Drooling or bad breath
- Facial swelling
- Sensitivity when eating
Early care keeps your pet comfortable and prevents bigger dental issues.

Did you know that..

🐶 Dog Lovers
Studies show people who love dogs often:

Are outgoing – enjoy meeting people and social activities.

Are friendly & cooperative – warm, compassionate, and trusting.

Are responsible – organized, dependable, and like routines.

Like structure – tend to follow rules, similar to dogs responding to training.

🐱 Cat Lovers
People who love cats often:

Are creative & curious – enjoy art, imagination, and new ideas.

Are introverted – prefer solitude or smaller social circles.

Are sensitive & intuitive – notice subtle cues, emotionally aware.

Think independently – challenge rules and value freedom, like cats.

🌟 Other Differences

Communication: Dog lovers are direct; cat lovers are subtle.

Lifestyle: Dog lovers enjoy outdoors, routines, and social events; cat lovers prefer relaxed, flexible, independent activities.

Self-Description: Dog lovers say “loyal,” “fun,” “active”; cat lovers say “thoughtful,” “creative,” “independent.”

Of course, this isn’t true for everyone! Personality is unique, and many people love both dogs and cats—or don’t fit the usual trends at all.

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) in Dogs & Cats ❤️

CHF happens when the heart can’t pump blood effectively, causing fluid to build up in the lungs or abdomen.

Why it happens:

Leaky heart valves

Weak or enlarged heart muscle

High blood pressure or other heart diseases - Especially Heartworm Disease in our area!

Common signs & symptoms:

Coughing or trouble breathing

Fatigue or tiring easily

Decreased appetite

Swollen belly or sudden weight gain (from fluid buildup)

Fainting or weakness

Restless sleep or increased breathing while resting

How it’s diagnosed:
Vets use X-rays, ultrasounds, and sometimes blood tests to check heart size, fluid buildup, and heart function. (A stethoscope can reveal clues, but more tests are needed for confirmation.)

What can be done:
While CHF can’t be cured, it can be managed! Treatment often includes:

Medications to remove fluid and help the heart pump better

Monitoring breathing rate at home

Regular check-ups to adjust medications

Follow-Up Diagnostics:
Pets with CHF need routine monitoring to track changes and adjust treatment. This may include:

Lab work to check kidney function and electrolytes

Blood pressure checks

Repeat echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds)

Follow-up radiographs (chest X-rays)

When to call us:
If your pet is breathing fast, coughing, seems weak, or has a swollen belly, contact the Baytown Animal Hospital right away!

With early diagnosis and consistent care, many pets with CHF can live comfortably for years.

Ever wonder why your furry friend seems to leave a little bit of themselves everywhere they go? Shedding is completely normal, it’s how dogs and cats naturally get rid of old, damaged, or excess hair to make way for new growth.

Why Pets Shed:
Shedding is influenced by a few things, the time of year, temperature, breed, and even overall health. Many pets “blow their coat” during spring and fall as they adjust to the changing seasons.

How to Manage Shedding:

Brush regularly: Frequent brushing helps remove loose hair before it ends up all over your home.

Bathe as needed: Gentle, pet-safe shampoos can help keep the coat clean and reduce excess shedding.

Feed a balanced diet: A healthy coat starts from the inside! Quality food rich in omega fatty acids promotes skin and coat health.

Regular checkups: Excessive shedding can sometimes signal skin issues, allergies, or stress, so don’t skip those vet visits!

Heavy Shedders:
Breeds like Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and Corgis are known for their seasonal shedding.

Light Shedders:
Breeds like Poodles, Bichon Frises, and Shih Tzus shed less, but they require regular grooming to keep their coats mat-free.

Remember, shedding is natural, but with the right care routine, it’s manageable!
